If you come to Overwatch 2 and want people to know exactly how good you are – whether you are good or not – you should dive into the competitive mode, which is back again. But this time it is different.

Aside from the obvious shift from 6v6 to 5v5, here’s how to unlock the competitive game, or the Overwatch 2 competitive mode has crossplay, which has changed between games and more.

How to unlock Overwatch 2 Competitive Mode?

While returning players who unlocked the mode in the original game will have immediate access to competitive play, newcomers will first have to work their way through the ‘First Time User Experience’. Here’s the curated, and frankly rather overly lengthy introduction to the game, and how you unlock everything beyond the handful of heroes available – including game modes.

However, the short answer here is that you have to win, not just play, 50 quick play matches before you can enter Overwatch 2s competitive mode. Of course, as is often the case with free-to-play games, you can get around this hurdle simply by purchasing the Watchpoint Pack.

Does Overwatch 2 Have Competitive Crossplay?

The answer here is, sort of. While Overwatch 2 is fully crossplay between PC and consoles in all other modes, there are two groups for players in competitive mode: one for PC players and one for console players.

That is, if you are on PS5 and you want to play the competitive mode with your friend who is on Xbox, that would work. However, your PC master racing buddy will have to make new friends. And it’s about time they did – what are the chances that you’ll be in the mood for a round of CS:GO anytime soon?

What competitive modes are there in Overwatch 2?

Like the unranked multiplayer, Overwatch 2 has a ranked Role Queue mode and a ranked Open Queue mode at launch.

You get one overall rank for playing the competitive Open Queue mode, and teams are free to choose any combination of heroes they like. The reel queue, however, forces teams to stick to the structure of one tank, two support and two damage heroes – you make your choice before queuing for a match and get a rank for each role.

What has changed for Overwatch 2’s competitive mode?

overwatch 2 competitive scoreboardSkill rating is now Skill Levels

SR has been completely replaced by seven skill levels ranging from bronze to grandmaster – the latter, of course, being the most precious metal known to man. Each tier consists of five divisions, designated numerically, with 5 being the lowest and 1 the highest. Perfect sentence.

A demonstration of how this works in practice is that if you are ranked Platinum 1 and move up a division, you are now Master 5. These only update during the season when you get seven wins or 20 losses, whichever comes first. The first time you meet these skill level criteria, so will your placement matches.

Skill levels and divisions are also not displayed when entering a competitive match. Instead, players can show off their titles and name tags.

The leaderboard has also been revised – medals have been completely removed and you can now see your team’s stats at a glance. This includes eliminations, assists, kills and damage. Finally!

How do groups work in ranked modes?

Groups in ranked matches have a few restrictions on who they let in now. Players ranked between Bronze and Diamond can group with up to four other players, provided they are within two skill levels of their current rank. Master players are also unlimited in group size, but teammates must be within one skill level.

However, Grandmasters can only group with one other player, and they must be within three skill divisions like them. And Top 500 players can pair with a single other Top 500 player. That one mate that’s much, much better and doesn’t have a job? Say goodbye to playing with them in the ranking.

Game reports

Blizzard has also added game reports, which provide a deep dive into how you played. They let you summarize all the matches you’ve played in this session and provide stats about your performance, match info, heroes and which game modes you’ve played That in.

Where are my rewards?

Your loot has also undergone some changes. The seasonal commemorative icons and sprays earned as competitive rewards are gone and instead there are unique titles for your name tag. These are earned to progress through skill levels and can only be used in the next season.

There is also now a limit to the number of League Points you can earn at the end of a season, determined by your highest skill level in both Role and Open Queues. You earn 15 points for a win, 5 for a draw, and you need 3000 to unlock a golden weapon.
