No. 22 Texas travels to Texas Tech on Saturday, September 24. The game will be streamed live on fuboTV (livestream) and DirecTV Stream (free trial).

Texas coach Steve Sarkisian offers no clarity on the injury-clouded quarterback situation for the 22nd-ranked Longhorns on his first and possibly only trip to Texas Tech.

The top two options for Saturday’s Big 12 opener are well known to Texas Tech’s Joey McGuire, the former Baylor assistant and lifelong Texan who now faces the Longhorns for the first time as head coach.

McGuire tried to persuade Quinn Ewers to come to Lubbock when the former high school senior in Dallas transferred from Ohio state. Hudson Card was another top recruit, playing just a few miles from the Texas campus.

Ewers, who won the base job, was out against UTSA last week with a collarbone sprain, while Card played through the high ankle sprain he sustained after replacing Ewers two weeks ago against then-No. 1 Alabama.

Example

GET THE HOOK: Big 12 games always bring out a few “Horns Down” signatures from Texas opponents and it is sure to show up on just about everyone at Jones Stadium.

But it could also be a 15-yard penalty if an official thinks Texas Tech players are doing it in an unsportsmanlike or sarcastic way. McGuire said he will remind his players of the rule.

“I have to laugh about it, I don’t understand. It really makes me laugh that it’s a rule,” McGuire said. ‘I’ll make sure it doesn’t happen. I don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings.”

TECH’S QB PHOTO: With Tyler Shough still weeks from his return from a shoulder injury, sophomore Donovan Smith has thrown five interceptions in the past two games since dominating the Murray State lower division in the opener. Redshirt freshman Behren Morton threw the last of Texas Tech’s three interceptions in last week’s 27-14 defeat at No. 12 North Carolina State.

‘I hope you see them both. That’s been the plan from the start,” McGuire said. “I said we’re going to play all three. One of them is now injured. All three of us played game 1. Game 2, we played the two. Game 3, we played the two. I expect them to play this week.”

RUN STRONG: The Longhorns can still lean on a strong run no matter what happens at quarterback. Bijan Robinson ran for 183 yards and three touchdowns and Roschon Johnson had 81 more with a score in last week’s 41-20 win over UTSA.

The Longhorns rolled in 298 yards behind a young but improving offensive line starting two freshmen. Robinson averages 6.1 yards per carry and clocked 19 miles per hour at the end of his 78-yard touchdown run against the Roadrunners.
