While Valheim has already proved successful, there are some limitations within the portal-based transport system. Valheim was originally released through Early Access in February 2021, allowing developer Iron Gate AB to customize the game’s systems and world as players explore it. Despite a number of updates, one system in Valheim which has remained relatively unchanged.

For a relatively small investment, players can create portals and navigate themselves through the vast world of Valheim. However, it remains impossible to move raw metals and their molten counterpoints through these portals. This has left some players frustrated as they make their way to new continents and biomes, so there are a few tweaks Iron Gate could make to leave the system better than ever.

After beating ValheimFirst boss Eikthyr, players will be given an item needed to harvest tin and copper ore in the Black Forest biome. This flow lends itself to building forward bases in any new area players can explore. Teleporting between these bases helps lighten the burden of transporting materials needed to survive in this harsh Viking world. Unfortunately, when one of the game’s metals is in a player’s inventory, portals become impossible to use, which makes transporting new metal ore to a player’s original base more difficult, especially if the ore is on another island. is found.

Removing this metal requirement would help facilitate travel across the ocean biome of Valheim, where challenging snakes linger. Normally, the carriage of important metals in the cargo hold of Valheim‘s ships can lead to devastating losses at sea. Being able to teleport metals and ores through portals would make harvesting easier. Players could set up portals where they found the raw ore and connect it directly to their bases, making the game’s material-gathering process less time consuming.

Potential levels of portals in Valheim

Instead of changing the current limitations of portals, the developers of Valheim could add a tier system instead. As is the case with armor, the further a player gets in the game, the better the gear he has access to. Currently there is only one type of portal in valheim, unlocked when players acquire their first Greydwarf eye, Fine Wood, and Surtling core. This means that players will open up the option to start using portals once they explore the burial chambers in the Black Forest biome.

This minor requirement leaves room along the game’s current five-tier biome arch for other types of portals. To ease frustration for later players, a second portal level could allow the movement of dragon eggs and lower metals at the cost of a significant amount of silver from the fourth major biome, Mountain. The last tier of the portal can allow for the transport of anything, but can only be crafted with Black metal (found in the game’s challenging Plains biome) or Flametal metal (currently not used in Valheim). This would be an endgame portal as a reward for beating all five major bosses.

Demolish articles for materials

An easier solution than the previous two would be to allow players to deconstruct the items they make using different craft benches. At this point, once a piece of armor or weapon is created, it cannot be reduced to its core materials. Players can already travel through portals with items made of metal, so this requires players to build only with the ore they find and then deconstruct after teleporting.

The process of deconstruction already exists through the construction aspect of Valheim. Building materials can be deconstructed with hammers for the exact same amount of materials used in their creation. For those who want to balance this, the developer may even have material costs for deconstruction.

Each of these individual changes would help to Valheim more accessible to players who are not so keen on grinding for making materials. With the Mistlands update coming out sometime this year, Iron Gate could very well be working on one of these options.

Valheim is available now for PC and will be released in early 2023 for Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.
