Week 5 of the college football season kicked off Thursday, and the action continues throughout the weekend with a new series of games on CBS Sports Network, as conference title races across the country intensify. Two games are scheduled for Friday, and three more are scheduled for Saturday as the first week of October kicks off what has been a riveting season across the country so far.

First up on Friday night, Middle Tennessee will host UTSA, as the Blue Raiders attempt to follow last week’s turmoil in Miami by opening the Conference USA game on a good note. Then, in a late night Mountain West showdown, a much-improved UNLV team receives New Mexico at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

Saturday’s triple header kicks off at Army, where the Black Knights host the victory-less Georgia State in a battle of teams seeking traction after a rocky start. Then, in the afternoon, Fresno State returns to action after a week goodbye to play in UConn. Finally, Wyoming receives San Jose State in the nightcap in a Mountain West fight.

Here’s the full rundown of all the action from Week 5 on CBS Sports Network. All times Eastern

Spread: UNLV -14.5 | Will the rebels cover? Watch SportsLine’s Week 5 projections

Storylines: One month into the season, UNLV (3-1, 1-0 Mountain West) has already surpassed the combined win tally of the 2020 and 2021 seasons. The Rebels forced six turnovers in a 34-24 win over Utah State last week, including five interceptions. New Mexico (2-2, 0-1) dropped a 38-0 game at LSU last week but forced seven turnovers in a 27-10 win over UTEP two weeks ago.

State of Georgia in the Army

Date: Saturday Oct 1. | Time: 12 o’clock
Place: Michie Stadium — West Point, New York
TV: CBS Sports Network [Channel finder]
Live Stream: CBSSports.com | Mobile: CBS Sports App
Spread: Army -7.5 | Will the Black Knights cover? Watch SportsLine’s Week 5 projections

Storylines: These teams are a combined 1-6, but probably better than their records suggest. Georgia State fell back to 0-4 last week with a 41-24 loss to Coastal Carolina, but the Panthers also started 1-4 last season before rallying for an 8-5 season. Leger defeated Villanova 49-10 two weeks ago for his first win and was off last week. These teams split their two previous meetings in 2019 and 2021.

Fresno State at UConn

Date: Saturday Oct 1. | Time: 3.30 pm
Place: Pratt & Whitney Stadium — East Hartford, Connecticut
TV: CBS Sports Network [Channel finder]
Live Stream: CBSSports.com | Mobile: CBS Sports App
Spread: State of Fresno -24 | Will the Bulldogs cover? Watch SportsLine’s Week 5 projections

Storylines: When Fresno State quarterback Jake Haener was ejected two weeks ago in the Bulldogs’ loss at USC, the prospect of his return this season looked bleak. But Fresno State coach Jeff Tedford said this week that Haener is now “week-on-week” with an ankle injury. Whether he plays against UConn or not, the Bulldogs (1-2) should have enough firepower to get past a UConn squad that has been outmatched 100-10 against Michigan and NC State in the past two weeks.

San Jose State in Wyoming

Date: Saturday Oct 1. | Time: 7:30 pm
Place: War Memorial Stadium — Laramie, Wyoming
TV: CBS Sports Network [Channel finder]
Live Stream: CBSSports.com | Mobile: CBS Sports App
Spread: State of San Jose -3 | Will the Spartans cover? Watch SportsLine’s Week 5 projections

Storylines: San Jose State followed up its near upset of Auburn in Week 2 with a 34-6 win over Western Michigan last week, while holding the Broncos to just 201 yards. The Spartans are 2-1 making their Mountain West debut against a Wyoming team that is 3-2 (1-0 MWC) after a 38-24 loss at BYU last week. The Cowboys defeated the Air Force 17-14 in Week 3 to start the league.
