Tiny Troopers: Global Ops is a fast-paced arcade twin-stick shooter that launched on August 9 on Steam, Switch, Xbox, and PlayStation. Starting life on mobile, how will the game translate to console and PC? Well, let’s see!

This title is developed by Epiphany Games, Kukouri Mobile Entertainment and published by Wired Productions.

Fire at will…

Which one is Will?! Tiny Troopers: Global Ops is packed with the best humor I’ve seen in a video game. Listen to the enemy’s jokes and let me know which one is your favorite below.

Welcome to TALON. That’s short for; Tactical, armor, logistics, operations and negotiations. Apparently we’re some sort of mercenary team, to be hired by any government that has a mess to clean up and the money to get it done! So far, I don’t think we’re exactly the good ones? Kind of like a retarded, twisted A-Team. I think it’s fat.

Our team consists of 4 small soldiers; Botch, Geordie (because she’s a Geordie), Soup (“Because he likes soup, it’s not that deep”) and “Some Kid.” Tiny Troopers: Global Ops supports cooperative play for up to 4 people, so be sure to grab your friends for this one!

Our insane team of Tiny Troopers is the best of the best of the best, after a little basic training of course. Once you’ve mastered the controls and basic weapons, you can start your first mission!

Gameplay

in his heart Tiny Troopers: Global Ops stays true to its origin, simplistic gameplay and is open to anyone of any skill. While this is a twin-stick style shooter, keyboard and mouse also play pretty intuitively. You get smoother directional movement – especially diagonally – with twin stick, so I recommend an Xbox controller if you have one.

It’s worth noting that players are assisted by aim-assist, which means you only have to shoot in the general direction of your enemies – like a frontal cone. Therefore, there is no real advantage to choosing a mouse over a twin-stick controller.

To survive the bullet hell that awaits, you need to master the dodge roll quite early. Grenades and other explosive projectiles are quite commonplace. You’ll often find yourself rolling through doorways, traps, and ducks of RPG-style weapons. Fortunately, players can revive defeated teammates during missions, similar to battle-royal games like PUBG. This is pretty useful for players like me who tend to neglect teammates and go out on their own… shooting and exploding bad guys. It also means the game isn’t at penalties for new players.

From the main menu we can access some additional features in addition to the usual missions, such as barracks, stats and arsenal. The Barracks provides an overview of our soldiers, while the Armory provides them with upgrades. As you might have guessed, the Stats tab provides details about our achievements such as wins, losses, kills, accuracy, etc.

By following basic progression protocols, players will unlock bigger, more powerful weapons as the levels progress. Vehicles such as tanks, SAMs, turrets, Humvees and helicopters are becoming more common. Did I mention you can also call in air strikes? Quite useful if you notice that you have no chance, or if you just feel like blowing something up.

One thing I appreciated during my playthrough is that Tiny Troopers isn’t too punishing, but it’s still challenging. Instead of struggling to complete levels and dying over and over, you find yourself replaying levels to get better accuracy, more points and a higher score. Side note: This adds a level of competition when playing with friends.

Graphic & Audio

I played on my usual rig, a PC with a Ryzen 5, 32GB RAM, and an RTX 3070… way more than the recommended Intel Core i3, 2GB RAM, and GeForce GTX 660. As you’d expect, it played without a hitch , no FPS drops , misaligned textures or screen cracks in sight.

Epiphany Games/Kukouri Mobile have opted for a low poly arty style with cute characters and exaggerated weapons. This is the mobile origin of the game making its way. Though I have to say, it looks great. In a strange, exaggerated way, it reminds me of the old Worms games, with their big helmets and even bigger projectiles.

My only complaint about the game graphically is the main player’s health bar. I found it a bit disappointing and it doesn’t quite fit with the rest of the images. Other than that, though, I couldn’t really pick any mistakes. Tiny Troopers: Global Ops is packed with explosions, gunfire and loads of special effects that really help set the mood.

The voice-overs are reminiscent of Starship Troopers, where the generals/commanders explain the objectives and are in control during missions.

Lifespan

Tiny Troopers: Global Ops is more of a pick up and play sort of thing than anything else. That said, I found myself having a good hour here and there and wondering where the time had gone. Being a review it’s hard to get a full picture of the game as it’s not always possible to get 3 teammates together for a good gameplay session. From what I see, multiplayer coop really improves on this title and offers more satisfying, chaotic gameplay. I definitely recommend playing with friends if you can!

I see this title as a title to come back to again and again when you and your friends have an hour to kill, similar to Left 4 Dead or The Anacrusis.

Final Thoughts

Tiny Troopers: Global Ops plays well, performs as it should and the 4 player loft is a nice touch. For what was originally developed as a mobile franchise, Tiny Troopers charts well on PC and is well worth adding to your collection.

I grant Tiny Troopers: Global Ops a Thumb Culture Silver award.
