Thymesias prologue ends with the player getting an absolute beatdown by Varg. Fortunately, the developers of Thymesia don’t let an act go unpunished, and so the player fights Varg in the third zone, the Hermes Fortress.
Like the rest of the bosses, Varg is no cakewalk and will definitely take a beating before going down. In addition, his slow, heavy hitting style punishes players for making him too aggressive and can easily knock the player down in just a few strokes. He’s one of the tougher bosses in Thymesia, but taking him out feels like sweet revenge for it. To do that, players need to know how to counter him, and this is exactly how to do it.
Varg Moveset Phase 1
Varg, like Odur, has two phases, making his fight much more difficult than The Hanged Queen and also more punishing if players make mistakes. Vargs Phase 1 moveset consists of five attacks that players must know how to counter.
Double swing
- Attack: Varg waves forward twice.
- Counter: This attack seems simple, but is deceptively slow. Players will want to react to his swings accordingly and get used to the timing of this attack.
Swing in Overhead Slam
- Attack: Varg will perform a regular swing before swinging his big sword over his head and hitting it down.
- Counter: This move has similar timing to his double swing, except with a slight delay on the slam, as it takes some time for Varg to move his sword. In addition, Varg’s first attack will be the same as his double swing, so this move can be quite deceptive. It is important for players to discern whether his second attack will be a swing or slam, and dodge accordingly.
Spider in Lunge
- Attack: Varg spins in a circle with his weapon and, after a short delay, quickly leaps forward.
- Counter: This movement is telegraphed by Varg’s spider, which has quite a bit of wind. The player must make sure they go back to dodge the first spin and then dodge to the side for the lunge.
Double overhead slam
- Attack: Varg will charge an overhead slam like his attacks above, and slam again very shortly after.
- Counter: This attack will be telegraphed through Varg and his combo will begin with an overhead slam. This should mean for the player that he will follow it up with another, and so they should be ready to dodge backwards out of the way.
Dash in Jumping Slam
- Attack: Varg will run backwards before leaping forward and knocking down his sword.
- Counter: The main thing players should pay attention to in this attack is Varg’s forward jump. When Varg jumps forward, players must dodge a safe distance while he lands to dodge his attack.
Varg Moveset Phase 2
Varg is similar to Odur in that his second phase is a bit more difficult. However, unlike Odur, Varg’s second phase has only one new attack. The main difference is that in the second phase, Varg will behave much more aggressively towards the player and give him less breathing room. The timing between his moves is getting shorter and his animations are speeding up a little bit, so players should be prepared for this new phase when it starts.
Varg’s Ultimate Attack
- Attack: This attack starts as soon as Varg is phased. His eyes will glow red and he will scream. Shortly after, he will run quite a distance towards the player. If he connects, he will pick up Corvus and knock him to the ground, following him with a massive downward slash. This will deal an absurd amount of damage and must be avoided at all costs.
- Counter: When Varg starts glowing red, get as far away from him as possible. Avoiding this attack is absolutely paramount to preserving the player’s health and life. It is important to note that this attack can be used multiple times, so players should be aware that he can use it again.
The fact that Varg has a single new move in his second phase makes him a bit easier than Odur because once the player sees his first phase, they know almost all of his moves. The main thing to note is Varg’s ultimate attack, which is quite clearly telegraphed.
Weapon of Plague: Shield
The Shield is a pretty ideal bullying weapon against Varg, as his slow movement allows players to react to his windups and block accordingly.
Featured talents
- Long dodge an ideal talent for Varg due to the sheer size of his attacks. It helps Corvus move far enough away so that he doesn’t take any damage.
- short claw is great for any boss fight because of its healing abilities. It’s a bit more risky in Varg’s fight, as players want to make short combos to reduce the risk of getting slammed.
Drinks
The long-lasting drink works quite well against Varg, as he doesn’t have many long-term options. The only way Varg can narrow the distance between the player is his slam attack, which can be easily dodged if players can spot him. This allows players to back up and slowly restore their health via the Long Lasting Potion, provided they dodge the slam attack.
Recognize Varg’s Movements
Many of Varg’s moves are slow, but blend into each other. For example, he can swing in a swing or swing in a slam. Players should try to recognize Varg’s movement patterns during battle so they can determine which move he uses next.
Take care of good health
Varg hurts, a lot. Some of his moves can do up to 200 damage, so players should try to keep their health bar as high as possible. This means don’t be stingy with the use of drinks and avoiding unnecessary hits where possible.
parry
Parry can work particularly well against Varg, as many of his moves are slow and heavy. This prevents the player from having to dodge out of the way and miss out on damage to Varg in time.
Varg is generally an easier encounter than Odur, and his slow pace makes him much more telegraph to dodge. That said, he’s definitely still a challenge, so don’t underestimate his potential.
Thymesia is now available for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch.
