SD Gundam Battle Alliance is an excellent game for fans of the long-running gundam series and newcomers who want to experience both accessible mecha action, with a thrilling campaign based on memorable scenes from the entire series, with a simple yet enjoyable gameplay loop that allows for plenty of stylish mecha combat.
While SD Gundam Battle Alliance is relatively easy to learn, there are a few essential information the game doesn’t tell you when you’re just starting out. If you want to get the most out of your Gundam excursions, here are five essential tips to enhance your experience.
Unlock new gundams and mobile suits by finding blueprints
After playing a few missions and unlocking a few Mobile Suits, you might be curious about how to unlock certain flagship Gundams from the series. Mobile suits are unlocked by obtaining blueprints. Blueprints are often received upon completion Breaking missions and real missionswhich in turn usually unlocks new Gundams and Mobile Suits without you having to do anything else.
To get certain Gundams and Mobile suits, you have to replay missions and disable specific targets, or play the Chaos Missions associated with the same stage for a chance to obtain the necessary blueprints. Pay attention to post-stage screens to see what blueprints have been obtained and what remains to be obtained to unlock certain Gundams.
Back attacks and counters are essential
While the tutorial at the start of the game will teach you most of the things you need to know about the basics of combat, it won’t go into two of the most effective ways to maximize your damage to enemies: Attack back and Counters.
Attack back are, simply put, any attack aimed at the rear of an enemy target. The hitbox for back attacks is quite wide and you can get back attacks often use one of your ranged weapons before certain enemies even notice youespecially when enemies are targeting another, such as one of your partners or a third party.
Counters are when you protect against an enemy attack with the right timing, which then gives you a generous window to follow up with a high-damage counterattack. Some enemy attack animations are more telegraphed than others, meaning the difficulty of the counter attack will vary between encounters, but in general countering won’t be too challenging.
Both techniques are essential to use along with your basic attacks to master the combat.
Increase Gundam stats with upgrades
From the main menu, you can upgrade the Gundams/Mobile Suits you’ve already unlocked to increase their individual stats. The base stats of the mobile suit you control depend on whether it is a Allrounder, sniper or Infighter. snipers have a specialty in ranged attacks; fighters have a specialty in melee, and Allrounders are a mix of both.
Depending on the class of your favorite Gundam, you would probably: choose to develop the stats that are weaker by default. However, if you’re using an all-rounder it won’t matter much, and you can generally invest in stats based on your preferred playstyle.
Upgrading your stats costs Capital, the currency you earn by playing. The higher the stat boost, the more you’ll have to spend, and if you plan on trying out different units, it’s worth bearing in mind that each Mobile Suit needs to be upgraded individually this way. For this reason, it makes sense to pick a favorite early on and stick with it for a while.
Experiment with different parts, skills and alliance effects
As you progress through the game you will find parts that can be equipped with your Mobile suit Passive buffs. These are distributed to you randomly at the end of each mission and are linked to the different Types of mobile suits (Allrounder, sniper and Infighter).
Up to three skills can also be added to your mobile suit. These are unlocked based on the level of your Mobile Suit, which will increase by upgrading their stats (explained above). Skills offer both passive improvements and active extra skills at higher levels.
Before you go into battle in a Mission Break or True Mission, you can also select up to two partners and mobile suits. Depending on the combination of Gundam types, your ‘alliance effect’ changes, giving your team another set of improvements. As you unlock more Gundams and pilots in the story, you can experiment with a range of different combinations and find effects that best suit your play style.
Designed for co-op play
As you will notice when fighting high HP bosses, SD Gundam Battle Alliance feels like a game made with cooperative play in mind. While there are no options for local play, the game offers a range of options to play the main story in co-op with both friends and matched players.
This is useful if finding extra blueprints will cost you a lot of grinding, and a team of human players will often get the job done faster than playing alone with AI companions. While the AI partners are certainly competent enough, you may have a much better experience with SD Gundam Battle Alliance if you play it with a pre-formed team.
