Cults and good news don’t usually mix well, and the same goes for even fictitious messages in video games. In fact, cults are quite common in video games as villains or hostile groups. That shows how menacing and gruesome they usually are with games like Cult of the Lamb giving players a taste of how some of these satanic cults work.
However, try however they can, the cult of the player in Cult of the Lambis just an adorable caricature of what the other video game cults are capable of. The worst of them – especially those led by humans rather than evil anthropomorphic animals – are sickening pits of evil whose crimes more than disgust and terrify players. The following video game cults are the worst offenders.
8 Testament of the New Ezekiel – Outlast 2
last longer is no stranger to horrific images and the sequel, Survive 2 raises the bar by unleashing players into a landscape filled with members of the New Ezekiel Testament rather than an asylum. Given how these cult members operate, some may even prefer the previous game’s asylum.
That’s because New Ezekiel’s Testament consists of: systematic child killers. Their original purpose is to prevent the birth of the Antichrist, which is an extremist religious vision, but somehow that has been twisted into deplorable crimes against humanity like assault, kidnappingand occasionally mutate into a grotesque monstrosity to complete the circle.
7 Unitology – Dead Space 2
Dead space 2 expands on the knowledge of the previous game by showing players how much the existence of Necromorphs has influenced the human species on other planets. From the ashes of the first game arose a religious order centered around Unitology, where death and the typical apocalypse are central to their beliefs.
The worst part is that they believe that the process of turning into a Necromorph is salvation themselves, so they don’t mind. Some of them are even too dizzy or excited at the prospect of cutting off their limbs ahead of time. That is a characteristic cult pastime for the unitologists. mass suicide is another, along with ritual human sacrifice for bulk orders.
6 Los Illuminados – Resident Evil 4
Similar enough to the unitologists of the Empty space mythos, the Los Illuminados from Resident Evil 4 is one of the most disturbing cults to have ever existed in a video game. Because the plague they chose… deify is none other than a zombie virus itself, the Los Plagas.
Admittedly, it may simply be due to the nature of the virus itself, which yearns to influence the actions of its host. Still, that doesn’t excuse the cult’s crimes. They are the full suite of evil as far as cults go, but most of them engage in kidnappings to bolster their numbers. What makes them more dangerous compared to other cults is that they have a purpose: take over the worldWhich explains why they kidnapped a president’s daughter.
5 Shrouded Isle Cult – Shrouded Isle
You cannot name terrifying cults without some Lovecraftian occult reference. It’s just that the Lovecraftian cult (worshipping the Great Ancients) in the shrouded island offer a more intimate insight into the inner workings of their organization. That’s because it’s the players themselves who control the cult members.
Players can view the entire game as a tourism management sim, except for the tourists are just sacrificial lambs for the glory of the invisible. They will have to plan carefully how to lure and… kidnap these unfortunate tourists in their provincial fishing place so that they can be offered as offerings. Now that the city is also poor and struggling, some of these victims will have to be served to servants instead.
4 The Project at Eden’s Gate – Far Cry 5
Far cry 5 has its own version of a doomsday cult and while they look inclusive and racially diverse, they aren’t half decent. In fact, their existence is quite odious and irritating. Their main activities usually revolve around land grab poor farm fields and acts of terror.
They also tend to spoil everything they touch like every county or city within a hundred miles of hush money from their pockets. As if that wasn’t bad enough, they also struggle in the drug trafficking, to smuggle, human trafficking, and all other types of illegal businesses. Plus, their church sessions are just creepy.
3 The Children of Atom – Fallout Series
While other sects here worship demons, monsters and cranky gods, The Children of Atom in the precipitation spell worship a literal bomb. This bomb has yet to go off, too, but that doesn’t stop the Children of Atom from crawling around them and thank God what to do with the bombs when no one is looking.
Aside from the bomb, they also worship and embrace all of its aspects, including: radiation. So this is a cult that doesn’t mind absorb artificial cancer therefore. It’s not exactly a good business or organizational structure for the cult, bathed in radiation and quarter their lifespan, but somehow they thrive… precipitationthe wastelands.
2 The Order – Silent Hill
Yet another doomsday cult, The Order from the Silent Hill games are all about “unity” and bringing about an apocalypse. They usually try to achieve this by inflating hallucinogens to keep their members engulfed and docile. It’s a shame their primary recruiting method is kidnappingand forced drunkenness. That’s the “unity” part.
The apocalypse portion consists of a welcoming committee for an alien god (which appears to be Lovecraftian in theme). This consists of a 14 year old girl who should have been impregnated, the birth of the host of the said god. They could have stopped at the “unit part” and maybe still get volunteer recruits.
The Mythic Dawn is the infamous cult responsible for kicking off the main mission and key events in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion. They are the ones who killed the Emperor at the behest of their gods, namely Mehrunes Dagon. He is the Daedric Prince of Destruction in Elder Scrolls lore, the equivalent of Satan.
That’s why the Mythic Dawn is practical: Elder Scrolls’ faux satanic cult. What makes their cult terrifying to members and spectators alike is the fact that they don’t mind Daedra or demons possessing their bodies and invade their world, which practically present themselves as pawns. At least in the dragons Skyrim only things burned.
