There’s a reason Skyrim has been relaunched so many times. It has lasted much longer than almost any game in the past 20 years, with many active players to this day. Unfortunately, it’s only so often that you can play Skyrim with conventional weapons before things get a little old.
While PC players can always spice things up with some ridiculous mods, console players don’t have that luxury, so they’ll have to make do with Skyrim’s original set of weapons. If you play on console, or just don’t feel like modding Skyrim, check out these unconventional weapons to spice up your next playthrough.
5 Ghostblade
While the Ghostblade can play like a conventional one-handed sword, it makes up for it with its aesthetics and lore. Found deep in one of Skyrim’s oldest Norse tombs, the Ghostblade bears the memory of a once great warrior through its ethereal form.
The Ghostblade’s mechanics reflect its unique shape, weighing just one to match its ghostly appearance. It also has an enchantment that deals extra damage by ignoring enemy armor, as if the blade cuts through the leather and steel to get to the enemy.
You can get the Ghostblade by completing the “A Love Beyond Death” quest. You can start this mission by entering Ansilvund, a dungeon north of Riften, and taking out the necromancers inside.
4 Soulrender and Bloodscythe
Soulrender and Bloodscythe are a few unique scimitars that work in an unusual way. Each of them has powerful enchantments, but they are only activated when used together. When used double, they are among the most powerful weapons in the game, thanks to their ability to absorb health and magic from enemies.
While their individual effects may be conventional, the dual-wielding mechanics make them stand out from Skyrim’s rather bland selection of standard medieval weapons. Using both scimitars can also force you to adapt and move away from the sword-fireball combo we’re all so used to.
You can find both swords at the remains of Haknir Deathbrand in the Glydenhal Barrow. To access it, you must complete the “Deathbrand” sidequest by reading a copy of the “Deathbrand” book. You can find the book in the Dragonborn DLC, with the easiest to find copy in Raven Rock Temple. You must be level 36 or higher to activate the quest when reading.
3 Giant Club
A club might not be the first thing that comes to mind when talking about unconventional weapons in Skyrim. However, the Giant Club is anything but ordinary. At about two meters in length, the Giant’s Club is by far the largest weapon in Skyrim, and also one of the funniest. The design is a perfect match for the intelligence of a giant, with the club consisting only of a large stone attached to the end of a tree trunk.
Absurdity aside, the Giant Club is also a great weapon, with a base damage stat of 60. Unfortunately, you can’t take advantage of this yourself – at least not without mods – because the player can’t interact with a Giant Club. The only way to witness its power is to bring a follower to pick it up.
You can find a Giant Club in a few locations, but the easiest way to find one is to head to Tumble Arch Pass, a giant camp west of Windhelm. You’ll find the Club on the ridge above the entrance to the dungeon.
2 The Wabbajack
The Wabbajack is a Daedric artifact staff that is symbolic of the Sheogorath, the Daedric God of Madness. As you might expect, the god’s signature weapon is suitably chaotic. Firing the magical burst of the Wabbajack at an enemy produces a random effect from a huge pool of possibilities.
With each fire, the Wabbajack can decide to burn or electrocute an enemy, turn him into a pile of cheese, or apply any of his other hilarious abilities. Despite your lack of control over the effects, the Wabbajack is still a very powerful weapon, as all of its spells strike much harder than you might expect.
You can find the Wabbajack as early as level one by finding Dervenin wandering the streets of Solitude. Talk to him to start his quest ‘The Mind of Madness’. Completing the quest will give you the Wabbajack as a reward.
1 Fork
The Fork is by far the most unconventional weapon in Skyrim, and also one of the funniest. Despite probably being included in the game as a joke, the Fork has everything you’d expect from a normal weapon. Ability buffs apply to it and it can be enchanted by any enchantment you would normally use on a Dagger.
Despite the Fork’s overall folly and completely useless base stats, it’s still a viable weapon in the right hands. There are YouTube videos that have popularized challenge runs in which players complete the entirety of Skyrim using just the Fork.
Forks are pretty well hidden for such a silly item, with the most easily accessible found on a secret ledge under a wooden bridge to the back of High Hrothgar.
