To spotlight some of the best possible MMORPGs that can be played on the PS5, the following list lists some great MMOs, both free to play and paid subscription, that players can jump on right now.

Trove

Easily one of the weirdest and most endearing titles to make this list, Trove is a free-to-play experience (with premium purchases) built in a style akin to Minecraft. Those who enjoy building things block by block will enjoy Trove’s basic building mechanics and marvel at the playful yet visually beautiful environments. It is much more loot-based than Minecraft, where players can build their own classes and unlock a wide variety of unique weapons built by other players.

Trove is a lot of fun and players don’t have to spend a cent to enjoy it.

Black Desert Online

Many compelling free-to-play MMORPGs have been introduced to the genre over the years, and some of them are incredibly ambitious in their design. Black Desert Online hit the market and was praised by some genre fans, who hailed the Asia-based fantasy title for its visceral combat. Those looking for an MMORPG that doesn’t feel like a traditional point and click game may find Black Desert Online with open arms.

It’s a graphically beautiful world with quite a few characters and quests, all underlined by some great combat that is much more hack-and-slash-action than MMO-based.

Star Wars The Old Republic

Star Wars fans have their own MMORPG if they want to embrace a journey through the space epic franchise. The Old Republic is a free-to-play MMORPG with a ton of content available to free players, including a wide variety of Star Wars themed classes that allow gamers to get to know a lightsaber up close. Those who prefer to take out their opponents remotely can use a blaster or rifle, and players can even fly through space in their own ship.

There is a lot to see and do in Star Wars: The Old Republic and players can make choices throughout the game that will help them on their way to becoming a Jedi or a Sith.

Fantasy Star Online 2

The original Phantasy Star Online was a huge success for some when it dropped back in late 2000, with some players jumping on the MMORPG to experience online gaming via console for the first time. It was also a great release, with fun battles and some great weapons. Fast-forward to the modern day and Phantasy Start Online 2 would finally hit store shelves, but only in Japan for what seemed an painfully long time. Those not in the Land of the Rising Sun couldn’t get their hands on the MMORPG without jumping through some seriously big hoops.

Now everyone can finally jump on the highly anticipated sequel, even those with a PS5. Phantasy Star Online 2 is a huge boon to fans of the series and a great action-based Sci-Fi epic for anyone unfamiliar with the series.

There’s no denying how influential The Elder Scrolls has been in the world of RPGs. Skyrim has been reported what seems like a dozen times, and players can experience their adventure as the Dragonborn on a dizzying array of consoles and hardware. It’s easy to see why, given that Skyrim offers some really entertaining RPG gameplay with engaging combat and some great story-based role-playing opportunities.

It’s for this reason that The Elder Scrolls Online is so much fun. It takes the formula gamers have come to know and love with The Elder Scrolls and transforms it into an MMO, giving players the chance to team up with other TES fans and enjoy a variety of recognizable locations and characters.

World of Warcraft

This MMORPG needs no introduction. Considered by many to be arguably one of (if not the) most influential MMORPGs to ever reach the genre. World of Warcraft has been going strong since 2004 and looks set to celebrate its 20th anniversary in just two short years.

Players have flocked to the ever-evolving traditional fantasy MMORPG for nearly two decades, and it’s easy to see why with its plethora of classes and hundreds of quests. A host of expansion packs have consistently transformed the game into a form of its old self, so much so that developers have even released a “classic” version for those craving a blast from the past.

Guild Wars 2

Arena Net came on the scene with their 2005 release of Guild Wars. The beautifully crafted MMORPG featured an incredible story of battle between two warring nations, bringing players straight into the action from the tutorial area and allowing them to experiment with a wide range of range of range of classes and skills. That’s why many fans were curious to see how the company would surpass their MMO success with Guild Wars 2.

Years later, Guild Wars 2 is a huge success, recently moving to a free-to-play model and offering players multiple expansions. Greatly improved action combat comes together with a truly captivating story and uses Arena Net’s clever “Living World” story system that allows players to do new and exciting things with each update.

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn

Arguably one of the most polarizing MMORPGs on the market today, the Final Fantasy 14 revival is a welcome addition to the genre. What started out as a rocky release, developers stuck to their plan to bring the world of Eorzea to life by canceling the floundering Final Fantasy 14 shortly after it started to decline. From there, they went back to the drawing board and developed Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, finally bringing their original vision to life.

Currently set up as a purchase and subscription game, Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn earns a place among the best MMORPGs ever released.
