The Ascent - Cyber Heist DLC Review: A Delicious Carnage (Xbox Series X)the ascent was my favorite game released in 2021. For those unfamiliar with the title, it’s a cyberpunk themed shooter with RPG elements mixed with eye-catching environments. I’m definitely a big fan of diablostyle games, a sucker for cyberpunk style aesthetics, and I love playing shooters so I knew I was going to jump on this experience from day one.

The game just shipped and it was easily one of my favorite Series X exclusives as it was a timed exclusive until 2022 when the PlayStation versions were confirmed. There were issues on launch day. I’ve run into a handful of bugs, but the post-launch patches fixed most of the issues.

From that point on, I’ve replayed the game several times just to enjoy the experience, experiment with the mechanics, and improve myself as a player. I even managed to complete the game on the hardest difficulty setting without dying!

I was very interested in The climbs cyber robbery and I’ve always thought it would have been nice to have more content that allows players to take advantage of their decked out characters. That’s what this $10 DLC is designed for and it requires the player to complete the main campaign before accessing it.

With all this background mentioned let’s get into this The Ascent – Cyber Heist review.

The Ascent – Cyber Heist is available on previous and current versions of Xbox, PlayStation, and Steam.

Story: Not much and forgettable

the ascent features beautiful world building and detailed environments that will make you believe you are about to experience a story-driven game. However, it was never really a game that focused heavily on having a compelling plot. The DLC follows the same footsteps. The title of this expansion is a dead surprise of what to expect in terms of plot. Basically, you are robbing something precious from one mega-corporation for another mega-corporation. A perfect reason why you’ll get a lot of interactive violence and that’s where the DLC really shines.

Gameplay – Turbo Riots

This one The Ascent – Cyber Heist review is written from the perspective of someone who has a lot of experience with the base game and played full solo on hard difficulty. The cyber robbery expansion is definitely aimed at players who understand how to play the game well, and it quickly puts the player into the combat trance.

the ascent certainly isn’t shy about sending the player to hostile threats, but this DLC takes that intensity to another level. It really wants you dead from the constant pure enemies they throw at you as soon as you step out of town and you’ll have to be careful as you explore the new environments.

This new content is primarily designed for the avid players. If you’ve only played the base game and haven’t touched it in a while, this add-on can be a rough awakening and potentially a chore to play.

The new weapons were a lot of fun to use and the highlighted ones were the melee weapons. They are a sledgehammer, a baseball bat and two variants of katana. Normally you wouldn’t want to take a melee weapon into a firefight, but they are very powerful and it can dramatically increase your survivability if you start using them for close quarters combat.

My favorite of the four is the katana. It’s a lot of fun to use because it has decent damage and you can cut it at a pretty fast pace. You also have the option to diablostyle Whirlwind move that makes this weapon even more deadly when you find yourself in a tricky situation.

There are also new weapons that can be rewarded from the side missions. I won’t give too much away of what they are and one of them I really liked to use. If you like guns that pop, this one will fulfill your fantasy like no other.

If something is big, hurt it until it's dead.

Welcome home

The overall expansion experience was especially enjoyable. If you liked the base game and what it offered, it’s actually more of that, but the missions are heavily designed for late game characters.

I felt this expansion lacked memorable moments like in the base campaign. There weren’t too many sections that I think could rival my favorite moments in the base campaign, but it was certainly exciting to tackle a higher density of the enemies you know.

I ran into some technical issues where my game crashed and I had to reset the game from the Xbox dashboard. Other than that, there was nothing too drastic in terms of bugs.

Heading into town and causing violence.

Heading into town and causing violence.

It didn’t take long for me to complete the main missions. It took me about three hours while searching for optional collectibles and secrets. Then I tried to finish the side content and search for all the optional pickups. It took me some time to figure out how to get to them, but it also took me the same amount of time.

The length of the DLC should equal six hours, which may not be satisfactory to some, but keep in mind that there is also a New Game+ mode and you can replay the DLC after playing the base game in that mode. have completed.

I also mentioned that I am an experienced player so it may take longer for those who are not around my skill level. I can definitely see that someone who is not an expert needs more time to finish this content, especially if you are a returning player and have not played it more than once.

Graphics and audio

For those who enjoy a game with stunning graphics mixed with highly detailed environments, the ascent is actually that game. The game uses Unreal Engine 4 for its visual abilities.

Standout environments were one of the things that caught the player’s attention in the base game, and the DLC is no different. You will see many visually detailed facilities, factories, labs and of course city environments. Make sure to take a selfie with the game’s internal photo mode.

I found myself constantly impressed and inspired by the new detailed environments where I just have to stop and appreciate it. Neon Giant has done a wonderful job as I am a fan of level design and this is something I look out for.

Sometimes you just have to stop and stare.

The soundtrack was one of the things that stood out in the base game and I think the new songs live up to them. I wish they could have used some of the older songs for this expansion, because personally I’d love to hear ‘Foreign Reach’ again in one of the main missions. That song pleases my inner cyberpunk soul.

The songs are either ambient when it’s quiet or when there’s heavy fighting going on and it will be more upbeat and energetic. My favorite song was easily the one used in the final boss and I thought it greatly enhanced that encounter. I also couldn’t stop nodding my head as I tried to take him down.
