NPCs have been a ubiquitous feature of video games since the dawn of the digital gaming era, be it a single player adventure or an online multiplayer adventure. NPCs shape a game and make the world believable and vibrant.

Short for non-player characters, NPCs in Terrariums are friendly automated characters who provide services to the players.

To interact with an NPC, the player must stand near an NPC and press the ‘Open/Activate’ button to open a dialog box with one or more options for the player to select. Most NPCs are merchants who display a local inventory when the ‘Store’ option is selected.

These NPCs sell items to players in exchange for coins, while they can buy items from a player to get coins. A few NPCs have options to perform other functions.

While NPCs would play a very non-integrated role in a regular game, they behave a little differently in the world of Terrariums.

How many NPCs are in it? Terrariums?

There are a total of 29 NPCs and three town pets that are considered special NPCs. Each NPC must meet certain conditions to unlock them, except for the Guide, who is the only NPC that will be present in your city at the start of the game.

To make it a bit clearer, in Terrariumsthere are:

  • 18 city NPCs in normal mode.
  • Eight city NPCs only found in Hardmode.
  • Three NPCs that can be found outside the city.
  • Three pets for which you need to buy licenses.

How do you get NPCs to this point? How do they work?

Most NPCs in Terrariums are city NPCs that only appear after a slew of milestones are reached as they progress through the game. They move into houses that the player must bid, which in most cases are necessary to keep city NPCs available.

Each NPC needs its own house, with one exception where a pet NPC and a non-pet NPC can share a house.

NPCs that have settled in houses will decrease the spawn rate of enemies in the area. This effect only gets bigger the more NPCs are present; in most cases, if you have three or more city NPCs nearby, NPCs will stop spawning on or near the visible screen (unless you’re playing in Expert or Master mode).

NPCs usually roam around during the day and remain stationary in their homes at night or during events.

NPCs have a limited health pool and are vulnerable to damage. They can die from enemies, lava, traps or drowning in water, but conversely they take no fall damage and recover their health over time.

If an NPC is killed, they will not respawn until the next day. In some cases, an NPC may require a specific item in your inventory to reappear, such as the arms dealer who needs bullets and the wrecker who needs explosives.

Most NPCs can also defend themselves as they have their own weapons, which is useful when enemies invade your city, especially during events like Blood Moons.

NPCs also cannot be attacked directly by players unless they use Rotten Eggs or special Voodoo Doll accessories.

What is the perfect room for an NPC to move into?

Aside from each NPC’s unique requirement that you must meet, you should also build a room for each NPC that meets their standards so that they can move in. An NPC will automatically revoke after a certain amount of time since the construction of the perfect room.

An ideal room has:

  1. A living space of at least 60 blocks in total, including floor, ceiling and walls. A room larger than 750 blocks is too big.
  2. Any kind of flat surface such as work benches or tables.
  3. Any kind of light source.
  4. Any kind of chair.
  5. Walls and ceiling constructed from pure materials.
  6. Player-created background walls.
  7. At least one entrance to the room, such as a door, platform, etc.
