The first post-launch update of Splatoon 3 fixes several issues players have discovered and makes a change to Splatfests ahead of this month’s event.

The first major post-launch update for Splatoon 3 is out now, just a week after launch, and it brings with it quite a few notable fixes and other tweaks. As with just about any online-centric game these days, many problems can only be discovered when people are playing en masse, although it was to Nintendo’s credit that it quickly started the first round of fixes for them. Splatoon 3.

Update 1.1.1 touches almost every major aspect of the Splatoon 3 experience, fix things in all main modes and adapt the new approach to the game for Splatfests. According to Nintendo’s patch notes, it prioritized these fixes, particularly because of their focus on fixing issues that could affect player progress and tweaking Splatfests prior to launch. Nintendo has confirmed that the changes will affect the new Tricolor Turf War mode, in which players from the leading Splatfest team will compete against members of the other two teams at the same time. With 1.1.1, the rate at which Tricolor Battles take place has been slightly reduced, so players will likely end up in regular Turf War matches more often. That said, Nintendo emphasized that it will continue to tweak Tricolor matchmaking for future Splatfests, so players shouldn’t have to deal with this change for long if it’s poorly received.

Among the more common changes of the update are fixes to issues such as one that can affect the weapon’s accuracy if the game has been running for a long time, as well as several that can freeze the game or hit players with communication errors. Such problems were a problem over Splatoon 3‘s regular multiplayer modes in addition to the updated Salmon Run and story modes, so Nintendo fixing them will undoubtedly make for a smoother experience for players across the board.

A few potential gameplay exploits have also been fixed, including an issue where players can jump further than usual with a Squid Roll while charging a Squid Surge, and an issue where players can stay on the water when performing fast moves like dodge rolls with Splat Dualies. Several tweaks to certain maps, weapons, and enemies round out the fixes that 1.1.1 brings, so overall it’s a pretty solid improvement. That said, Nintendo has already planned a new patch stating that it will mainly focus on balancing Splatoon 3‘s weapons and dealing with “other issues that were beyond the scope of the current patch.”

Changes to Splatfests

  • The number of Tricolor Battles has been adjusted. From the perspective of the defending team, they will trigger a little less often than before.

Changes to player controls

  • Fixed an issue where it was possible to jump further than usual with a Squid Roll by taking a certain input while charging a Squid Surge.
  • Fixed issues that occurred when playing for a long time without closing the software, such as shots from the player’s main weapon not firing correctly.
  • Fixed an issue where the player could move through the surface of the water or stand on the water if moving quickly. For example, when performing a Dodge Roll with Splat Dualies.

Changes in multiplayer

  • Fixed an issue where high frequency connection errors occurred at the end of battles due to the connection environment.
  • Fixed an issue with the Bloblobber where the collision detection of the third and fourth blobs of a single volley became extremely small.
  • Fixed an issue where money and experience would not be awarded in certain circumstances when a battle ended early due to lack of players.
  • Fixed an issue where a player could not cancel matchmaking in certain modes if there were not enough other players. Matchmaking is now automatically canceled after a certain amount of time has passed.
  • Fixed an issue in Sturgeon Shipyard where it was possible to enter the back of certain drawbridges.

Changes in salmon run

  • Fixed an issue where high frequency connection errors occurred at the end of tasks due to the connection environment.

  • Fixed an issue where some players with identical titles were considered “Rank Supporters” and were not awarded rank points.
  • Fixed an issue where continuously damaging a submerged Maws with certain special weapons would cause the game to crash.
  • Fixed an issue where players got stuck in the stage area.
  • Fixed an issue where at the end of battle, the number of Grizzco Points earned would show less than the amount actually added to save data, preventing the player from collecting rewards.
  • Fixed an issue where the messages at the start of Wave 3 could change based on whether or not a King Salmonid appears.

Changes to Story Mode

  • Fixed an issue where, after clearing the last stage, a communication error occurred in the middle of a certain scene and the player went back to the square.
  • The post-clear cutscenes can be viewed by clearing the last stage again.
  • In cases where this error has occurred, the last stage is considered deleted and the stage can be skipped from the pause menu on a retry.

Other changes

  • Fixed an issue when starting the game for the first time that could cause the game to freeze and not continue from the black screen after the screen where yellow and blue ink mix.
  • Fixed an issue when downloading a battle replay that would occasionally cause the game to stop.
  • Fixed an issue where the game would crash when updating the schedule while trying to join a friend.
  • Fixed a rare issue where the game would crash while the player was visiting a store.
  • Fixed an issue where a communication error could occur while a player was trading equipment in a store.
  • Fixed an issue where a connection error could occur when purchasing a weapon. A player then appears to have equipped the weapon despite not being able to purchase it, which would cause a connection error if the player attempted to join a battle.
