When you think of the word animatronics, chances are you think of Five Nights At Freddy’s, the grandfather of the current wave of the horror subgenre. It’s everywhere: games, books and a movie in the making. It’s kind of hard not to think about it, it’s a popular title that’s still going strong even after all these years.

Be it an FNAF fangame or something outside the genre, this is a celebration of all animatronics and how varied and disturbing they can be, both in looks and knowledge. So sit down, grab something to eat and enjoy the horror.

8 Working Joes – Alien Isolation

The logic behind Seegson Corporation’s decision to make their version of staff androids, aptly named Working Joes, appear more robotic makes sense, it was certainly a choice to make the human-like features as inhumane as possible. Turns out it would eventually become the stuff of nightmares in Alien: Isolation.

The faces of Working Joes have no function whatsoever. The balancing act of both with humanoid features with no specific human features is disturbing, and you can feel it deep in your subconscious, making you want to turn the game off for a while. They aren’t as scary as the queen as you can at least take them out of service, but you still shouldn’t underestimate what a group of them can do.

7 Motorized Patriots – Bioshock Infinite

Starting out as guides in Bioshock Infinite’s floating city of Columbia, they are equipped with a lack of fear and self-preservation, but with guns. These hulking presidential statues shoot straight at you with no attack pattern. The only time they stop is when they need to reload.

Three types of patriots follow Presidents Washington and Lincoln and founder Benjamin Franklin. Can you imagine what they would think if they could see themselves in this form? It’s something straight out of a nightmare – the relentless hunt for the ultimate traitor.

6 The Mad Doctor – Epic Mickey: The Power Of Two

Making animatronics is one thing, but making an animatronic with your own body as the subject? It’s wild. That’s exactly what The Mad Doctor does in Disney’s Epic Mickey series. He wasn’t the main opponent in part one, but he returns in part two, claiming he learned from his nefarious ways.

The joke, however, is ours, as it turns out. The creator of Beetleworx has plans for the ultimate power to become famous. Not only is he capable of creating animatronics, but he has also created his cartoon world, called The Wonderful World of Evil, in the hopes that the ratings will help him again.

5 The Owl – Case 2 Animatronics

She watches your every move. Once the tall, terrifying owl catches your eye, it’s going to be hard to disappear from under her gaze. She plays red light, green light with you, but without all the fun and taking turns.

Instead, The Owl will dazzle you with your own camera light if you’re rude and stare at her for too long, then use that opportunity to shorten the distance and attack you with increased speed. But can you blame her? You probably don’t want to be stared at either.

4 Pugapillar – Poppy Playtime

Pugapillar is what you get when you want to both amaze and terrify children. Yes, they are 50 feet tall and have hundreds of legs which makes them undeniably scary, their faces are quite cute and will make you want to give them pets. He scares you so much that you won’t even notice that his body is the wrong color from his in-game form.

Which makes it a shame it couldn’t be on your side, you know? Man’s best giant friend to keep Mommy Long Legs at bay. Nothing at Playtime Co. is so simple. Instead, it was made to play the deadliest game Red-Light Green Light with you.

3 Animatronic Bendy – Bendy and the Ink Machine

It doesn’t move. The animatronic is only a prop and is defunct. You don’t have to worry about anything when you see him split in half and lay there on the table in Bendy and the Ink Machine: Chapter Four. Animatronic Bendy is also in chapter five, but again, he doesn’t move and can’t hurt you. Unlike most others out there.

But if you listen to engineer Lacie Benton’s audio log, you’ll find out that she thinks it’s watching her every move when she’s in the same room with it. His eyes feel alive. her colleague kept working on it in the hopes that it could walk and entertain children, but it never had a chance to achieve that goal. Probably for the best.

2 The Joy Joy Gang – Dark Deception

The gang, which consists of Hangry the Pig, Penny the Panda and Lucky the Rabbit, will be found in their theme park, Joy Joy Land, which lives up to its name. You will have to dodge the clones as you search for all 181 soul shards. And all this before you meet Hangry the Pig.

You see, Hangry only thinks of one thing. Nothing else matters to him: ribs. Slathered in sweet barbecue sauce and slow-cooked for hours, he’ll do anything for those ribs. The type of meat doesn’t matter either; he’s looking for beef, pork (because of course he would), and human. You just had the unfortunate luck of being stuck in this nightmare.

1 Freddy Fazbear – JRs

You can’t have a list of animatronics without putting FNAF on it in some form. In this case, it’s a fan-made game called JR’s, and it takes the Five Nights foundation and turns it into something that’s both fantastic and photo-realistic. Take Freddy Fazbear for example. The teeth and his smile are reminiscent of Donkey from Shrek, but it’s built into a permanent smile. His face doesn’t resemble the brown fur of the original, but it has become more skin-like.

Each of the classic characters got the same makeover and balloon boy almost made the cut to be the scariest, but there’s something about how Freddy’s skin looks sickly and pink that makes it clear that this isn’t your typical FNAF fangame.
