The peripheral: the plot

Flynne Fisher is a young woman living in the South of America. The synopsis describes her as “clever, ambitious, and doomed” for being unable to leave her small town. She works in a 3D printing company but gets extra money by playing virtual reality video games for the rich. In the book, her brother Burton initially did the video game job, contracted as virtual world security, but he left to protest against a religious extremist group, so Flynne temporarily takes over the job.

One of the games she plays turns out to be part of the future. A connection has been opened between Flynne’s world and a version of London set 70 years in the future. What she sees there is interesting and dangerous, but she keeps going back to find out who made the opening that allows her to be there. In the original story, she witnesses a murder and people from the future try to get her back so she can identify the person responsible.

In the book, the story is told from Flynne’s point of view and the eyes of the individual in London. Wilf Netherton is a publicist who works for a diplomat who wants to bond with a group of people called ‘Patchers’. They are so named because they live on a waste island in the Pacific Ocean that has been adapted to support life. This does not go well with Wilf, and his and the diplomat’s efforts result in the death of the entire population of Patchers. This group of people returns later in the story.

The story ends with the Wilf and Flynne moving on with their lives after being rescued towards the end of the book. A time jump shows where their lives end, with each finding love, but they still communicate every now and then through time and space.
