Rifles Undarkness

Shin Megami Tensei Persona series composer Shoji Meguro announced a Kickstarter campaign for Rifles Undarknessits new gun RPG announced in 2021.

The new Kickstarter campaign for Rifles Undarkness launches in a few days – September 12, and has a modest funding goal of $30,000 to make the game for PC. There will of course be stretch goals to do Rifles Undarkness ports on Xbox, Switch (or any new Switch), and PlayStation.

It’s worth repeating Rifles Undarkness is Meguro’s first game after leaving Atlus as a full-fledged staff member and working freelance.

“Through Kickstarter I would like to Rifles Undarkness an even better game with the support and early feedback from the fans,” said Meguro in a press release. “With the help of our donors, I hope to solve the visual problems and polish everything, so please support me!”

Here’s an overview of the game:

Guns Undarkness is a strategic JRPG that combines stealth elements with command-driven turn-based combat in a futuristic sci-fi universe. The player takes on the role of a member of the PMC (Private Military Company) in the year 2045 who has to carry out operative missions with their colleagues in a world devastated after a nuclear war. The story of the game will focus on the protagonists as they fight to revolutionize the human race and get closer to the idea of true love.

Gameplay

On the field, the player controls the main character and up to three allies. Using hand signal buttons, players can instruct their allies to hide at cover points and use the “Go” button to order them to cover their character.

When an enemy is spotted, the player can open fire. If the player’s team attacks the enemy while he is completely hidden, an attack bonus is activated. The more the player fires during this bonus, the more damage he will deal before the battle begins. Hidden or not, once the player shoots at the enemy, the game will jump into turn-based battles.

In-battle commands include a range of choices, such as basic ATTACK and SKILL, which pack more punch and cost SP. There will also be GUARD, MOVE, WEAPON, ITEM, ESCAPE, and TAGS, which refer to the character’s defense suit.

Strategic gameplay can be used by unleashing skills while attacking from cover, which costs no SP. If the player manages to hit the enemy at a weak point, he can deal massive damage and take cover.

The affinity of the character’s weapon and the target’s TAGS determine how much damage is dealt. However, an enemy’s defense value can also reduce the amount of damage they take. In addition to powerful abilities, there are also weapons with special buff and debuff abilities.

If you win one, the player’s team earns two types of experience points: Character EXP and Gun EXP. Leveling up increases a character’s stats and unlocks new weapon skills. Players can improve their weapons by adding parts and even acquire blueprints and materials to build new weapons as they progress through the story.

Outside of missions, players spend their time in the Maroon Hub, an amphibious submarine the team uses as their hideout, which they can use to accept missions, visit shops, or travel to other locations on the world map.

Story

In the year 2045, humanity was in a state of stagnation that allowed technology to flourish. However, it deepened the social divide between rich and poor, giving rise to the “Haves” and the “Have Nots”.

Within the ranks of the latter grew a faction that planted the Great Reset – an event steeped in primitivism that would change the course of humanity.

The Thousand Plateaus launched two weapons of mass destruction, triggering a global nuclear war. And so the Great Reset was accomplished.

Enter the protagonist, a rookie member of a private military company in charge of the deteriorating situation. It’s up to you to discover the truth of love in a world ravaged by destruction, and whether humanity is capable of revolutionizing it.
