Lot 2 has a solid player base, over a million active users, and is arguably one of the most popular loot shooter games on the market. Launched in 2017, Lot 2 has successfully built upon the story and lore that began with the original game and continues into the future with even more planned story content. The recent unveiling of the light trailer has whetted the appetite of many players yearning for more.
As more content is added to the game, Bungie has spent time reorganizing aspects of the game to make it more appealing to new players. In the past, Lot 2 has been criticized for making it difficult for new members to get used to the game’s story, lore, mechanics, and operations. That’s not to say the game is unplayable or too confusing; it had some organizational issues that made the complexity of the game apparent.
New light in destiny 2
In 2019, the release of shadow retention saw an overhaul of the game’s mechanics and starting quests. This new version of Lot 2 became a free-to-play re-release game, with an introductory exploration called New light to introduce new players to the world and gameplay of destination 2. With this new intro, elements from the first game’s quest in the Cosmodrome have been redesigned to serve as a new opening.
Initially this is New light release saw players get a jump ship before reaching the tower and starting The Red War campaign, together with Curse of Osiris and Warmind. The hatching of Beyond the light like the fifth story expansion saw New light reworked, now with the player Guardian fighting through the Fallen and Hive in partnership with Shaw Han, another Guardian stationed on the Cosmodrome.
From here, players will be introduced to the game’s looter shooter mechanics, the story that has evolved thus far between the light and darkness, the fallen and the beehive, and other races that threaten humanity. Once players have access to the tower, New light expands its quests for players to start with Vanguard, Crucible, and Gambit matches. All this content is free for players and can provide many hours of tasks and gameplay.
Story expansions in Destiny 2
Lot 2 the game released with The Red War campaign, which saw a system-wide conflict between the Guardians and the Cabal, who served the Darkness. The Curse of Osiris and Warmind was released as other expansion packs for the game to include Year One. Year two saw the release of Deserted with gameplay changes, followed by shadow retention and Beyond the light.

While these stories are not necessary to enjoy the game aspects of Lot 2like Gambits, Crucibles, or Vanguard Strikes, if new players are entrenched in the game’s lore, they’re worth checking out.
In addition to the paid story expansions, Lot 2 includes additional seasonal content that allows players to earn more loot, XP, and other rewards to diversify and build their Guardian characters. This seasonal content usually only includes missions and story features to enhance the main story expansion pack that launches that Year of Destiny and future seasons. While some aspects of Seasonal content are free for players to earn their rewards, there is a Premium Pack of Seasonal Activities and Rewards that requires a paid purchase of the Season Pass or the current Deluxe Edition Story Expansion. The Deluxe Edition allows players to play the current season and all past and future seasons that are part of the current Year of Lot 2.
What to play first in Destiny 2
With so much content available, while others have been vaulted, it’s easy to see why new players in the past have been confused about exactly how to get started with their Lot 2 trip. While it may seem enticing to have the full pack available to get started with all the story content and expansion features available, it might be wiser to get the free-to-play version of Lot 2 and start New light.
Despite some adjustment, the New light Quest has proven to be a grounded way to introduce players to the game’s story, lore, history and mechanics, while paving the way for future activity and conflict, such as through Vanguard Strikes, Gambit Matches, and Crucible events . With so many free hours of the game to dive into, it will be a surefire way for new players to discover if they like the content and style of the game before committing to paid expansions.
Once players have gone through enough free content and want to explore more of the game’s lore, it makes the most sense to get the story expansions. While some expansions aren’t always as exciting or lengthy as others, it’s recommended that you continue to get the best experience. shadow retention first, followed by beyond light, and finally, The Witch Queen. These expansions will provide many hours of activity in preparation for the release of light in 2023.
Lot 2 offers plenty of content for both old and new players to sink their teeth into. In the past, the game struggled to bring in new players seamlessly, which is why it reworked specific game mechanics and settings to provide a more streamlined way to learn the ins and outs of the game.
