With new exciting heroes on the way, players are looking forward to the release date of Overwatch 2. Longtime fans of this franchise may be interested in the details of the upcoming sequel for Overwatch. This guide is everything you need to know about the Overwatch 2 release date, the battle pass, the new heroes and maps coming, and everything else.
When is the Overwatch 2 release date?
The Overwatch 2 release date is Tuesday, October 4, 2022. However, this is only for the PVP portion of the game. Blizzard hasn’t revealed any details yet on how close we are to Overwatch 2 PVE’s release for launch.
Since Overwatch 2 was announced, Blizzard has been very quiet about its development. With only a few closed betas for the game being handed over to the public, players weren’t quite sure when Overwatch 2 would be released until recently.
Even now, we only know the Overwatch 2 release date for the PVP side. Those looking to team up against AI will have to wait for the developers to announce a release date for the PVE content.
What platforms is Overwatch 2 available on?
Overwatch 2 will be available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and PC. With so many platforms the game can run on, Overwatch 2 has no shortage of accessibility for everyone, no matter what they play on.
There will also be crossplay and cross-progression for Overwatch 2. So if you’re playing with friends who are on different platforms, that’s no problem at all. And if you want to transfer your progress between two platforms, you can.
The only real limit is on the Nintendo Switch. Due to the limited hardware and the fact that it is a mobile experience, the game’s technical director John Lafleur announced in a Reddit AMA that there will be some compromises with Overwatch on the Switch. Keep that in mind if you choose to play with the Nintendo Switch.
What are Overwatch 2’s new game modes?
From what we’ve seen, only one new PVP game mode was added at launch, called “Push”. In this game mode, players compete against each other in symmetrical maps to push the central robot to the base of the enemy team. It’s like a tug-of-war mode, but in the opposite direction.
Players who feel that Despite its potential, Overwatch’s story hasn’t been fleshed out in the first game will be thrilled to see Blizzard’s emphasis on PVE content. Notably, Overwatch 2 offers story-based content that can be played in PVE coop.
Since we still don’t have a release date for the Overwatch 2 PVE, we’ll have to wait and see where this takes us. But from what we’ve shown in the trailers, it looks like players will team up to liberate Omnic-infested locations. There is also a new feature that allows players to build their own unique combination of attacks for the story’s PVE content.
Who are the Overwatch 2 new heroes?
Overwatch 2 will have three new heroes that will make their debut at launch:
- residence: A damage hero with many cybernetic upgrades. A former member of the Canadian Special Forces before joining Overwatch, Sojourn has a strict military discipline that allows her to be a great leader and tactician.
- Junker Queen: A tank hero who prioritizes stealing the lives of her opponents. When Junker Queen injures as many enemies as possible, she becomes devastatingly unstoppable in battle.
- Kiriko: A Support hero who is accompanied by her kitsune spirit. Kiriko can teleport through walls, cast healing talismans that can track down allies, and cast a protection suzu that dissolves debuff and renders her team temporarily invulnerable.
Those who have played the beta will already know Sojourn and Junker Queen. However, Kiriko is a hero that players have not tried yet and was only revealed a few weeks before the release date of Overwatch 2.
What are the gameplay changes in Overwatch 2?
The biggest change in gameplay in Overwatch 2 is the 5v5 team battles. Unlike before where teams fought in groups of 6, players now fight in a group of 5 where each team is limited to just 1 tank, 2 support, and 2 damage.
Since each team is limited to a single tank, tank heroes have undergone some tweaks to make the new rule viable. For example, Winston now has an alternate fire that allows him to charge an explosion that fires from a distance. New tank heroes like Junker Queen were also created for this new meta in mind.
What’s in the Overwatch 2 Battle Pass?
Here’s what you can find for free in the Overwatch 2 Battle Pass:
- Kiriko (support hero unlocked at level 55)
- Two souvenirs
- Two epic skins
- Intro with one highlight
- A weapon charm
- Eight prestigious titles
- 14 additional items including emotes, victory poses, player icons, name tags, etc.
Overwatch 2 forgoes the use of its infamous loot boxes and replaces them with the battle pass instead. All of the items above are what you can get on the Overwatch 2 free battle pass, but the premium battle pass will most likely offer something substantial, such as different character outfits.
What are the new Overwatch 2 maps?
Overwatch 2 promised us new maps that are more complex than their predecessors. Here are the new cards we can play in Overwatch 2:
New Queen Street, Toronto
Rio de Janeiro
Midtown, New York
Monte Carlo
Portugal
Rome
While it hasn’t been confirmed yet, there are rumors that Krakow, Poland might also be an in-game map sometime after the Overwatch 2 release date.
What will happen to Overwatch 1?
Overwatch 2 will completely replace Overwatch 1. The servers of the first game will be shut down on October 2, 2022 in preparation for the arrival of the second game on October 4.
This means that until then, players can enjoy the original Overwatch in all its splendor before it is gone for good. You won’t be able to play the original 6v6 matches, graphics and current meta after that, so enjoy it while it lasts.
