MultiVersus Update 1.03 comes today and adds Rick Sanchez to the list of playable fighters, while also making controversial changes to the game’s XP and progression. MultiVersus has seen regular updates since its launch last month, with many more in the pipeline. Some of these updates have been welcomed with open arms by fans, but the latest update so far has proven to be quite divisive.

MultiVersus fans haven’t had a chance to play as Rick and make up their minds about him yet, but it’s always nice to add a new character to the roster in a crossover fighting game like this. But while Rick’s addition to the… MultiVersus selection is likely to be well received, the XP changes have already been criticized by fans.

From MultiVersus update 1.03, players need twice as much XP to increase their characters from three to 15 MultiVersus update 1.03 patch notes explain that this change was made to make the leveling process “more of a journey”. Regardless of the reasoning, this move has sparked a quick reaction against the game, as evidenced by the general reaction on sites like Twitter and Reddit.

Ultimately, this will mean it will take longer MultiVersus players to unlock all the benefits for their chosen characters. This can adversely affect new players compared to those who were able to level up their characters before the XP requirement was doubled. Given the backlash this decision has had, it will be interesting to see if the changes are rolled back, or if the developers stick with their weapons and keep the XP requirement where it is.

There will be many more MultiVersus future updates that may further customize the experience may find a middle ground between doubling the XP requirement and players leveling up too quickly. Future updates will add new characters such as Black Adam and Stripe from Gremlinsas well as the highly anticipated Arcade and Ranked modes, though release date information for that content has yet to be announced at the time of writing.

While MultiVersus fans are waiting for more information about what future updates have in store for the game, they can try Rick Sanchez. Rick is an Expert level character, which means he costs 3,000 coins to unlock, so fans should keep that in mind.

MultiVersus Update 1.03 Patch Notes

General

  • Rick Sanchez joins MultiVersus! Rick is a new Mage character who joins the roster.
  • The XP required to go from level 3 – 15 on the character mastery track has been doubled
  • We found that players could reach level 15 of the mastery track too quickly. This is to help us make it a bit more of a journey.
  • Loading performance improvements for PS4 and Xbox One.
  • The first free character after completing the intro tutorial has switched to Shaggy from Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman can now be purchased for gold or shine.
  • Attack extinction steps have been added to the intro tutorial.
  • Fixed an issue in Coop-Versus-AI that caused only Wonder Woman and Reindog bots to appear.
  • Fixed a bug where some players could not equip profile icons.
  • Fixed a bug where the game would occasionally freeze at the end of the game screen.

Twitch extension

  • Minor visual bug fixes
  • Added ‘Fighter Voting’ that allows broadcasters to poll their audience on which fighter to play, viewers with MultiVersus get bonus votes.
  • Added the ability for viewers who have MultiVersus to claim free toast from Twitch channels running the extension.

Anti-infinite combo system

  • We’ve implemented a new anti-infinite combo system that will destroy all subsequent attacks if the same attack has been used 4 or more times in the same real combo. The goal is to put a global soft cap on infinite combos and make combos more creative. We hope the change prompts players to explore new and more exciting combo routes.
  • We thought the maximum number of the same attack was 3, but we wanted to evaluate the change more slowly. We are going to evaluate the change and are open to feedback on how we can improve the system!
  • The option to choose between 4 directions or 8 directions for the right joystick control (c-stick) has been added to the settings menu.

Projectile Systems

  • We will continue to update projectile systems in this patch. The most notable addition is the inclusion of a new “Light Projectile” rating for projectiles that have no recoil. The only light projectiles in the game for now are Rick’s unloaded blaster and the pies fired by the Neptr auxiliary item.

MultiVersus is out now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
