The Final Fantasy series is home to some of the most iconic characters to ever praise video games. Each entry usually follows an eccentric group of protagonists on a perilous journey to save the world. As a result, players will spend a lot of time learning to like the main characters of an entry, but this favoritism will often make the series’ villains less memorable.
Final Fantasyis well known for creating some of the most iconic villains in video games to date, with Sephiroth earning the title of Most Popular. While most of the villains in the series are male, there are numerous female antagonists who outnumber them.
10 Fuu – Final Fantasy 8

Fuu is a member of Balamb Garden’s Disciplinary Committee along with Seifer and Raijin. Her role in Final Fantasy 8 presents her as nothing more than a bully, but her relationship with Seifer has resulted in her becoming a villain.
While Fuu is usually sidelined in favor of presenting Seifer as an inherently evil villain, there’s no denying how iconic she is. She rarely speaks more than one word during any of her performances, a choice that portrays her as mysterious and unpredictable. Her love of violence also helps to cement her as a truly unhinged character.
9 Leblanc – Final Fantasy 10-2
Like Yuna, Leblanc is a bulb hunter who spends most of her time scouring the vast lands of Spira in search of ancient relics. She acts as the primary antagonist of Final Fantasy 10-2 for most of the runtime, but certain events lead her to become a temporary ally.
Though she poses little threat to Yuna, she makes a point of hindering her journey whenever she gets the chance. Compared to Vegnagun, she’s nothing more than a minor inconvenience, but this doesn’t stop her from believing she’s the greatest threat the Gullwings have ever faced.
8 Elena – Final Fantasy 7

After leaving Midgar, Cloud and his friends encounter a Turk named Elena. Unlike her colleagues, Elena takes her role as a Shinra employee very seriously, but her lack of experience and knowledge of the position often paints her as somewhat unsuitable.
Cloud first meets Elena while exploring the Mythril mines, where she accidentally reveals what the Turks are up to. She is presented as incompetent for the rest of the story, but this trait never distracts from her mind-boggling fighting skills.
7 Brahne – Final Fantasy 9
As ruler of Alexandria, Brahme wields a disturbing level of power. Though she seems to have everything she could wish for, her desire to rule over everything corrupts her mind and drives her down a dark path. Her daughter, Princess Garnet, catches wind of this change in her character and flees, an action that marks the beginning of… Final Fantasy 9.
For the most part, Brahne seems to be carrying out her own desires, but this is not entirely correct. Kuja, the main adversary, has poisoned Brahne against her daughter in hopes of controlling the queen. Though Brahne eventually apologizes for her actions, it’s hard to forgive her for what she’s done.
6 Beatrix – Final Fantasy 9
Beatrix is introduced in Final Fantasy 9 as a counterforce. She is the lead general of the all-female army of Alexandria and is arguably the most gifted warrior in the entire game. The player will have to fight Beatrix several times during the story, but it is impossible to defeat her.
Her role in the story forces her to put an end to Princess Garnet’s attempted escape. Although she leads the army of Alexandria, she still has to answer to Queen Brahme and obey her orders when they are issued. She eventually reevaluates her purpose and decides to join Zidane and Garnet in protecting the world.
5 Aranea – Final Fantasy 15
Like Beatrix, Aranea is introduced as a villain before finally changing her mind. Her role as an antagonist involves taking command of the Niflheim Empire’s air combat unit and using this position to carry out her duties. She is a skilled warrior who masters the dragon fighting style.
Noctis first encounters this elusive dragoon while trying to infiltrate a military base in Niflheim. The two engage in a fierce battle before Aranea backs out, noting that she is not being paid after a certain amount of time. She’s a force to be reckoned with, but thankfully her change in loyalty leads her to join Noctis.
4 Yunalesca – Final Fantasy 10
Yunalesca, once a powerful summoner, sacrificed her life in an effort to keep the memories of her people alive. Never having reached the Farplane, she waits in Zanarkand for callers like herself to ask for her advice and guidance.
Tidus and Yuna see her intentions as righteous, but they soon find out that’s not the case. Yunalesca has been sacrificing summoners since Sin’s first appearance and although she knows the creature can’t really be defeated, she continues to do so.
3 Scarlet – Final Fantasy 7
Aside from Jenova, Scarlet is the most sinister villain present in Final Fantasy 7. She is the head of Shinra’s Weapons Development Sector and is proud to know that her input will lead to the death of countless people.
She has disdain for most of her colleagues and considers herself the only capable member of the Shinra Electric Power Company. This confidence is evident in her dealings with her peers, and even more so in the vicious way she addresses her enemies.
2 Ultimecia – Final Fantasy 8
Ultimecia is arguably one of the most devoted villains in all Final Fantasy series. Her primary goals in Final Fantasy 8The campaign is to bend space and time to her will, squeeze the universe and become a god, a feat most villains can only dream of.
To set her plans in motion, Ultimecia travels back in time to cast a spell to compress time. In doing so, she ruins countless lives, but does not spare any compassion for her victims. If it weren’t for Squall, she could very well have decimated the entire universe.
1 Jenova – Final Fantasy 7
Jenova is an ancient alien life form that fell from the sky long ago. The Cetra believed that her presence could cause mass destruction and decay, making Jenova look more like a plague than a real villain. She poses little threat when imprisoned, but Sephiroth’s decision to release her revealed just how powerful she is.
During his mission in Nibelheim, Sephiroth is made aware of his relationship with Jenova. Hojo has been experimenting with Jenova’s cells for years and chose to use Sephiroth as a candidate for cell transfusion, a revelation that explains how he became so powerful. Therefore, Sephiroth considers Jenova his mother and promises to make Shinra pay for what they did to her.
