A video game character can have multiple traits to help them stay memorable. Most gamers will probably focus on a character’s personality or choice of clothing, but sometimes the most notable aspect of a character are their eyes.

Eyes can take many forms depending on the game they appear in. Some have otherworldly qualities, while others are just a little more noticeable. Regardless of their intended purpose, it’s hard to deny how memorable the eyes of a certain character may depend on what they symbolize.

10 Shifty Eyes – LA Noire

LA Noire follows the story of Cole Phelps, a homicide detective tasked with investigating a series of recent murders. He encounters several suspects while working as a detective, with some being much harder to crack than others. His interrogation often leads to a suspect panicking, which in turn leads to some really comical facial expressions.

A suspect will usually react strangely to a question about their involvement in or knowledge of a crime. They will grin and fidget, but their most iconic reaction will cause them to shift their eyes. While these eye movements are meant to symbolize panic, the exaggerated way they flicker back and forth is just hilarious.

9 Hershal Layton’s Button Eyes – Professor Layton

Most characters present in Professor Layton consist of unique and intricate designs, but Hershal Layton, the main character, is an unusual exception. He has an incredibly simple design that stands out even more because of the more detailed characters he surrounds himself with.

Layton’s eyes are arguably the most emotionless eyes present in the series. This suits his personality as he rarely has emotes, but instances where he does can often feel strange due to these slightly lifeless optics. While they should make it difficult for his ability to express his feelings clearly, there is a strange charm about them that never allows it.

8 Tom Nook’s Tired Eyes – Animal Crossing

There’s no denying that Tom Nook has worked hard to get to his place on the financial ladder, but perhaps he would seem less exhausted if he took it easy. Every encounter with this famous tanuki sees him staring sleepily at the player and muttering money-hungry words before returning to his workplace.

In addition to running multiple businesses, Nook is also a proud surrogate father to Timmy and Tommy, two adorable tanukis that Nook apparently got off the street. It’s no wonder he suffers from eye strain, so much is happening in his life.

7 The eyes of Androids – NieR: Automata

Although the eyes of the androids in NieR: Vending Machines are rarely seen, the black cloth that shields them makes them the most memorable physical feature of an Android. The fact that 2B and 9S can do their job while limiting their view is mind-boggling, especially given the obstacles blocking their path.

There are numerous moments in the game’s story where these blindfolds are removed to reveal what lies beneath, with each of these instances having some meaning. Exposing an android’s eyes usually signifies their distrust or abandonment of YoRHa, making the presence of their eyes that much more impressive.

6 The Invincible – Final Fantasy 9

Final Fantasy 9 follows the story of a young thief named Zidane whose questionable lust for riches puts him at the center of a sinister plot. His story begins with an attempt to kidnap Princess Garnet, but he learns that she wants to be kidnapped to escape her mother’s clutches.

While fleeing from Garnet’s mother, they discover an alien force that can enslave eidolons. Garland, an immensely powerful man, pilots the Invincible, a striking airship with a giant crimson eye at its base. This eye can destroy and capture anything its gaze falls upon, making it one of the most powerful entities in all Final Fantasy.

5 The Staring Eye of the Master – Kingdom Hearts: Back Cover

The Gazing Eye Keyblade was once believed to bow to Xehanort’s whim alone, but the Dark Seeker Saga’s conclusion has revealed that the sword has an unusually detailed past. It once belonged to the Master of Masters, a deceptively powerful keyblade who decided to put his own eye into the blade’s teeth.

The presence of this eye gives the already intimidating blade another level of evil due to its terrifying design. With it embedded in the blade, the Master can see into the future, as long as the blade is there to witness the events unfold.

4 Kenny’s Bandaged Eye – The Walking Dead

After Clementine and her friends are captured by Carver, she takes it upon herself to devise an escape plan. To set the plan in motion, she decides to steal a radio, but Carver discovers this plot and refuses to let his new tenant’s betrayal go unpunished.

Clementine prepares for her sentence, but Kenny refuses to allow Carver to hurt her and steps forward to take the blame in her stead. Carver feigns respect for Kenny for a moment before beating him so brutally that he can no longer see through his left eye. He shields his eye with a bandage for the rest of his story, a look he does surprisingly well.

3 Herobrine’s White Eyes – Minecraft

Although Herobrine never actually appeared in Minecraft, he has become one of the most iconic characters to emerge from the franchise. Many rumors describing the foreboding nature of this elusive creature were spread throughout the community, making Herobrine one of the most feared entities in gaming history.

It was believed that Herobrine would randomly appear across the map and stalk players during their adventures. He would lurk in the shadows and stare at his prey with blank white eyes before attacking and quickly killing them. His design is based on Steve, but his hollow eyes make him a much less charming version of the iconic skin.

2 Cloud’s Mako Drenched Eyes – Final Fantasy 7

Cloud’s eyes are constantly referenced by those he encounters on his journey through Gaia. As a SOLDIER, he went through a series of experiments to improve his genetic makeup, but these experiments had a fascinating side effect on his physical appearance.

Cloud eventually finds out that he was never part of the SOLDIER program. His eyes began to glow after they were injected with cells from Jenova, an alien who crashed into Gaia and was soon imprisoned by the Shinra Corporation. These glowing Mako eyes are a sign that someone has been experimenting at the hands of Hojo, Shinra’s lead scientist.

1 Xehanort’s Yellow Eyes – Kingdom Hearts

For a long time it was believed that Xehanort’s eyes radiated a yellow hue because that’s how they were when he was born. Kingdom Hearts 3however, eventually revealed that his eyes turned yellow after he distanced himself from the light and embraced the darkness.

Xehanort created numerous versions of himself during his lifetime, with several having the same sinister-looking eyes. It can be assumed that all yellow-eyed characters in the Kingdom Heartsseries are somehow influenced by the Dark Seeker, making the power he harbors even more intimidating.
