There are plenty of promising Marvel games on the horizon, but the Incredible Hulk is due for a brand new triple-A blockbuster title of his own.
Many great Marvel video games have been released in recent years, but fans expect a title starring the Hulk. This stream of solid triple-A superhero games was started by Insomniac’s excellent Marvel’s Spider-Man in 2018, which gave players an exciting open-world experience with the iconic web pendulum and spawned a solid sequel in the 2020’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. That same year, Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics released the team-based action RPG Marvel’s Avengersand while it has seen quite a bit of controversy surrounding its live-service content model and perceived pay-to-win microtransactions, the developers are continuing to add new content – such as the Winter Solider as the next Marvel’s Avengers hero. Finally, last year Eidos saw things go to the stars with Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxya rocking title that received high praise for its plot and characters – even if it fell short of publisher Square Enix’s admittedly high sales expectations.
More exciting triple-A Marvel gaming content is coming, like the one from December Marvel’s Midnight Sun. This Firaxis-developed tactical RPG puts players in the role of a new, fully customizable hero called The Hunter, as they join forces with Marvel’s more supernatural characters in a battle to save Earth from a demonic army. Next year will be the long-awaited release of Marvel’s Spider Man 2, which promises to build on the foundation of its predecessors in a darker story that will take Venom to Insomniac Marvel’s gaming continuity. He’s not the only familiar face on the PlayStation 5 either, because Marvel’s Wolverine is in the same PlayStation universe as the Marvel’s Spider-Man series, and could set the stage for a full-blown X-Men gaming revival. Finally, a Captain America/Black Panther team title was recently announced at the Disney & Marvel Games Showcase, and there are rumors of an Iron Man game in the works at EA.
The skies really seem to be the limit for Marvel fans thanks to this promising lineup of future superhero games, but one iconic Marvel hero is missing from the roster of upcoming standalone titles – and he’s practically tailor-made for a stress-busting triple. – A blockbuster. The Incredible Hulk is no stranger to the gaming world, as the 2005 hit – and the next generation – Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction gave players an open-world city to destroy as Dr. Bruce Banner and would have a kind of spiritual successor in 2008 The Incredible Hulk connect movie. However, the Hulk has not received his own video game since then. He was featured as a playable character in Marvel’s Avengers, but only as part of a larger cast of heroes. Likewise, the not-so-joyful green giant has been featured in recent trailers for Marvel’s Midnight Sunbut apparently as a corrupt enemy in Lilith’s demon army that players may or may not take control of later.
A new Hulk game would be incredible
The Hulk is due for a new triple-A video game and the sections of Marvel’s Avengers where players wreak destruction like Hulk could serve as a solid foundation for how the gameplay of this hypothetical title might work, given how much fun it is to smash through enemies like the Hulk was in that particular title. Additionally, Ultimate Destructionfully destructible open world could take advantage of the enhanced technology of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S to deliver a high-octane experience in which players can unleash the Hulk’s fury against everything in sight – be it involves buildings, basic army grunts or even super villains like The Abomination and The Leader.
The short teaser trailer for Marvel’s Wolverine even includes an Easter Egg reference to the Hulk in the form of a license plate hanging on a wall in the bar Logan drinks into, implying that Green-Skinned Goliath already exists in Insomniac’s world Marvel’s Spider-Man spin-offs. While this may be a simple shout-out to Logan’s early days fighting the gamma-powered berserker rather than a hint that Insomniac is a Hulk game in the future, another triple-A title centered around the great green fury monster is sorely missing from the ongoing wave of thrilling Marvel video games.
