Contrary to the popular misconception, even under Star Trek fans, the United Federation of Planets and Starfleet are not the same organization. Starfleet actually predates the Federation, and its history is tied to most of the time humans have spent in space.
While the organization and appearance of Starfleet personnel has always been military in nature, it is meant to value exploration, diplomacy and science. These idealistic concepts lead the way to boldly go where no one has gone before.
7 Founded somewhere between 2112 – 2136
Long before there was talk of a unified earth or group of planets rule, it was understood that some sort of military force, not only for security but also for construction and exploration, was needed to keep people moving forward. For example, Starfleet was not formed until a few decades after 2063 when Zefram Cochrane discovered warp speed and the first contact took place between the humans and the Vulcans.
It was Cochrane himself, along with his friend and colleague Henry Archer, who put together the early scaffolding for what would eventually become Starfleet as they developed more advanced warp technology. The organization would eventually grow over the years into a multifaceted operation that included various branches such as medical, tactical, security and a corps of engineers, along with a scientific and exploratory force.
6 Section 31 Created, Mid 2140
The exact timing is not known as this would be a big secret. The importance of Section 31 to the storyline depends on which timeline or alternate reality is used as the setting, with these clandestine and often amoral tactics more prevalent in the Mirror Universe or the Kelvin Timeline.
Section 31 was at one point an essential part of both Starfleet and the Federation, relying on their covert methods to gather and trade intelligence, and covertly wipe out anyone who threatened the Federation’s power and interests. Despite the Federation’s open denunciation of such tactics, they were eager to use them whenever it suited them.

Following the united forces’ success in the Battle of Cheron, in which Human, Vulcan, Andorian, and Tellarit forces drove the Romulan Star Empire to crushing defeat, the United Federation of Planets was formed to officially and long-term the alliance. to make. stand.

However, the emergency supply ships arrived earlier than expected, rendering their deaths unnecessary and making Kodos a mass murderer.
The tragedy shook the resolve of Starfleet, the Federation and humanity at large. Kodos the Executioner was thought to be dead, but decades later he reappeared under a different name, Anton Karidian. The story of how he moved in disguise for decades and how he was eventually caught is told in the Terms of Service episode, “The King’s Conscience.”
2 The Genesis Project, 2285
In the second half of the 22nd century, Dr. Carol Marcus makes a bold science proposal to Starfleet Command. She and a team of fellow scientists had developed a fast and efficient way to terraform a dead planet and needed Starfleet’s help to test their theory.
The USS Reliant, commanded by Commander Pavel Chekov and Captain Clark Terrell, set out to find a suitable inanimate planet to test the Genesis probe. However, their plans backfired when they encountered the survivors of a doomed attempt at a colony. It’s Chekov who first recognizes the reference to a TOS episode, “Space Seed,” which he also starred in, and things go downhill for him and Starfleet from there.
1 Praxis is destroyed, 2293
After Praxis’ moon was destroyed and the Klingon Empire was threatened with extinction, the military might that kept the opposing forces in the galaxy at bay threatened to become obsolete. For the first time in Starfleet history, there was a real possibility that the organization’s military wing would be scaled back or even dismantled.
Not everyone was ready for a change. The last movie starring Star Trek: TOS crew, The undiscovered land told the story of the approaching end of the Klingon Empire, which began with the destruction of Praxis and continued with a murder, a prison break, and the final journey of the original crew of the starship Enterprise.
