Tony Ferguson takes on Nate Diaz in the UFC 279 welterweight headliner, but the build-up to the bout has been anything but smooth as UFC returns to Vegas on Saturday, September 10 (9/10/2022).

UFC 279: Diaz vs. Ferguson will be a pay-per-view fight exclusive to ESPN+. The main fight card starts at 10pm ET. Preliminary rounds start at 8pm and early preliminaries at 6pm

The main event was originally a welterweight bout between No. 3 Khamzat Chimaev (11-0-0) and popular UFC veteran Diaz (21-13-0), but things fell apart during the weigh-in earlier this week. Chimaev was one of three fighters on the card to lose weight, and after some scrambling, Tony Ferguson (26-7-0) will step in to take on Diaz.

In addition, a scuffle backstage at the press conference forced Dana White to cancel the event midway through. White later said that Chimaev and Kevin Holland, who also fights on the main map, initiated the altercation.

“It was a complete s — show,” White told ESPN.

Either way, the show will go on and fans will be excited to cheer on Diaz as he fights for his final fight with his UFC contract. Some shuffling elsewhere on the map now means Khamzat will face Kevin Holland, and Li Jingliang will face Daniel Rodriguez
