How do you get the secret ending in Return to Monkey Island?
For most players, the “secret” ending, where Guybrush finally gets his hands on the secret of Monkey Island, is probably the ending they see first. To get to this end, they need to take the animatronic locksmith’s key and use it to open the nearby chest.
Inside, Guybrush will find a t-shirt, after which players can turn off the lights and leave with Elaine. Depending on how they react to the young Guybrush in the present, they will then see a different post-credit scene.
- The chest was filled with gems, rubies and gold! Young Guybrush plays around in a huge pile of gold and jewels.
- The secret was really the friends we made along the way. Guybrush is shown in a small boat with some of the characters from Return to Monkey Island.
- Your mother was right, it’s better not to know. The chest containing the secret is buried in a hole in the ground.
- I wasn’t making it up, it actually happened. A hand slides three cards across a counter, presumably for Guybrush, Elaine and the young Guybrush.
- There is not one answer to what the secret is. Players are treated to a Start-style scene with a balancing banana on a rock.

- Guybrush left before picking up the key. Guybrush and Elaine will sail around the Caribbean on a tall ship.

How to get the darkest timeline ending in Return to Monkey Island
Guybrush is known for holding his breath for a long time, but in the end he’s still only human. If players let the timer tick to zero while he’s underwater, the game will fall back on Guybrush and his son, with the former revealing he still had a little breath.
Players are then returned to where they last were, only this time with six minutes on the clock instead of eight. The same will happen again if players let the timer go to zero a second time, although the countdown timer now only has four minutes on their return.
When players let the timer count down to zero for the third time, the game is returned to the bank. This time, however, no one will sit on it and after a few short moments, a slightly depressing message will slowly appear on the screen.
Many years ago, on this day, Guybrush Threepwood died of what authorities would later call an accidental drowning. He leaves behind his beloved wife Elaine. They had no children. While he had many mighty adventures, the most important one remained unfulfilled. The secret was never found.
At this point, players will unlock the Dead Dead Dead achievement and then be booted back to the main menu. While it’s possible to unlock this ending in one of the game’s many underwater locations, the best place to do it is at the very beginning of Part 3.
Each time players switch between screens here, the time advances two minutes, meaning they can clear the timer in just moments by immediately returning to the left after switching from screen to right. Alternatively, leaving the game idle for eight, six, and then four minutes also works fine.
Return to Monkey Island is now available on PC and Nintendo Switch.
