As players hope to complete the arduous journey across states and into hostile territories in The last of us part 1, they will have to use whatever means necessary to survive. Throughout the game, players have the option to use different weapons as Joel and Ellie gain additional gear and get closer to their target.
Weapons are the most commonly used weapon, several of which can be found The Last of Us Part 1, but players are not limited to them. The use of a wide variety of equipment encourages players to strategize and covertly plan encounters, choose their play style in a firefight, and respond effectively when caught off guard in a high-stakes scenario.
guns
Players gain access to various firearms during The last of us part 1each of which is effective in different scenarios and is key to Joel and Ellie’s survival as they travel across the United States in search of the Fireflies.
Weapons can be upgraded on workbenches, as long as players have enough parts and the necessary tools, and are divided into two categories: pistols and long guns. After reaching Tools level 1, players can create secondary holsters on a workbench for their short and long arms to speed up weapon equipping.
9mm pistol
This is the first weapon available to players and should not be missed. After Tess explains to Joel that she wants to pay Robert an unfriendly visit, she leads the player through the Boston Quarantine Zone.
Upon arrival at their hideout, players can retrieve Joel’s backpack and the 9mm pistol. Once the workbenches are unlocked, the upgrades available for the 9mm pistol include reload speed, rate of fire, and clipping capacity.
Revolver
Players can collect the revolver after dangerously walking over construction equipment to get into a downtown building; players have to follow Tess and Ellie up a flight of stairs. In this next room, a body is leaning against a desk and the revolver is on the floor next to them. Upgrades to the revolver include reload rate and rate of fire.
shotgun
After saying goodbye to Tess in the Capitol, players must climb the stairs and follow the path to progress. Players must jump over a small gap to the next area where there will be a body of a Firefly and their shotgun, making these the first long rifle players players can get.
It is possible to upgrade the reload speed, clip capacity and power, but most importantly, a rifle scope and armor piercing cartridges can be added to the shotgun. Armor is not limited to human enemies, as infected ones like Clickers and Bloaters are also considered armored due to their thick layer of fungus.
Archery bow
Considered a “long gun” in-game, the arc can be found in Bill’s Town behind the shop where the Clicker sets one of Bill’s traps. Near the wall is a truck that says ‘No Trespassers’ that can be climbed with a ladder.
Players will see the bow resting against the back of a comfortable chair, along with an arrow and other tools. Ellie can also pick up a bow during Abandoned in the Colorado Mountain Plaza after a cutscene.
Pump shotgun
The shotgun, which Bill gives to Joel before the group searches for an operational car battery, is devastating up close. Players will often find that a single shot is enough to take out certain human and infected enemies, and the spread makes accuracy a bit less of a priority. Shotgun upgrades include reload rate, rate of fire, clipping capacity, recoil, and range.
shorty
This one-handed shotgun becomes available in the sewers during the sixth chapter, the Suburbs, and players have two options for collecting it. After starting the first sound trap, players can find a bench to the left, next to a blue lawn chair, where the Shorty can be picked up.
Alternatively, after Joel is separated from the group, players can find the Shorty on the body of an infected.
On a workbench, players can upgrade the Shorty’s reload rate, rate of fire, clip capacity, recoil, and spread.
military sniper
During the second half of the Suburbs chapter, Joel, Ellie, Henry and Sam are pinned down by a hunter who tries to take them with a sniper. Players must sneak around the various buildings to enter the house where the sniper is holed up.
After being eliminated, players must take over the sniper to defend the group from fighters and infected. Unfortunately, because this weapon is mounted in a fixed position, it is not possible to take it with you, but players can enjoy unlimited ammunition for a while.
El Diablo
One of the strongest weapons in the game, players have three chances to collect the El Diablo, each located inside Tommy’s Mother.
Along the path leading to the dam, players will see an abandoned car near a patch of purple flowers with the El Diablo and a few resources on the ground.
The second location is in a hut outside the entrance to the dam, where players can also collect the Power Plant Map artifact. The final location is inside the dam at the workbench.
Upgrades to the El Diablo include reload speed, rate of fire, clip capacity, and armor piercing.
flamethrower
The flamethrower is an effective weapon for thinning out hordes of enemies, especially uninfected ones, and creates distance between the player and enemies. On a workbench, players can upgrade the flamethrower’s reload speed, range, and power.
Players get two chances to pick up the flamethrower in the university; the first of which is located in the loading dock, where players will also find a workbench. However, if players miss it here, the flamethrower will also be available to collect in a nearby building on the lower floor, but players should be careful as there are several infected here.
Assault Rifle
While this is a primary weapon for the military and Fireflies, players will only be able to access it at the end of the game during Joel’s assault on those in Saint Mary’s Hospital. It can be collected from almost any Firefly enemy killed, but there are no workbench upgrades for the assault rifle and ammunition for it becomes scarce as you play on higher difficulty settings.
melee weapons
During The Last of Us Part I, players can equip different types of melee weapons. These weapons are useful at close range, especially when players are saving ammunition. Only one can be equipped at a time, and each has different levels of durability, indicated by a segmented bar to show how many hits players can take out before it breaks.
After a melee weapon is issued, players will return to bare-fisted combat when playing as Joel, and Ellie will use her switchblade.
The available melee weapons are:
- 2×4
- baseball bat
- Axe
- Machete
- Pipe
While initially introduced as throwing objects to stun or distract enemies, bottles and rocks can also be used as improvised melee weapons. Bottles will break on the first hit when thrown or used in melee, while rocks will break on impact after being thrown or after three melee attacks.
Crafted weapons
As players progress through the story, additional resources become available and new crafting recipes are unlocked. Players can craft explosive weapons such as Molotov cocktails, nail bombs, and smoke bombs.
Shivs are another crafted weapon that players can use, but they can only be used in stealth or as a last line of defense when held. While playing as Ellie, players will notice that shivs cannot be created because she has her switchblade, which can be used in stealth and as a melee weapon.
In addition, players can even make temporary upgrades to their melee weapons. By doing this, melee weapons gain rough blade attachments that extend their durability and deal additional damage.
The last of us part 1 is available on PlayStation 5 and a PC version is in development.
