Thanks to comments from Santa Monica Studio, players already have a good idea of what to expect in God of War: Ragnarok, but Sif has not appeared. As the final chapter of the adventures of Kratos and Atreus in Norse mythology, the stage is set for a climactic battle for survival. Based on how the apocalypse will seemingly engulf most of the pantheon, it makes sense that invitations have also been sent far and wide for the showdown.

GAMERANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

So far, Odin, Fenrir, and Thor have all been confirmed to appear in God of War: Ragnarok. Sif, the Norse goddess of the earth, has not been mentioned in any of the game’s promotional material so far. As an important figure within Asgard’s hierarchy, it would make a lot of sense for her to appear in some way. Based on how Santa Monica Studio built its universe, there are multiple ways it can approach the idea.

God of War’s Sif

For a big budget cinematic action game, god of warThe cast list is on the small side. Even though Kratos and Atreus work with only a dozen characters from Norse mythology, there’s no denying that the Santa Monica Studio universe is still remarkably fleshed out. Thanks to the efforts of Mimir, Brok, and Sindri in particular, players have already heard references to most of the pantheon’s protagonists.

Sif is just one example of a person who has not yet appeared on screen, yet has been removed by name and confirmed to be active within god of war‘s universe. While interacting with Brok after Kratos and Atreus finally reach Jotunheim, the dwarf mentions the Norse goddess of Earth by name. Aside from this and a rough description of her physical appearance, little is known about Santa Monica Studio’s version of Sif.

Besides being dressed in a regal looking dress, this woman also has striking golden hair, something Sif was famous for. This suggests that the studio built its universe in part with a mythology-accurate version of the character in mind.

Sif’s connection to Thor

Thanks to the confirmed and possible references to Sif in god of warit’s easy to see how they could theoretically fit in Ragnarok‘s story. In most versions of Norse mythology, the Earth goddess is depicted as the wife of Thor and the mother of his daughter Thrud. Based on what players have shown so far, it’s likely that this will also be the case in Santa Monica Studio’s rendering of the ancient religion.

Ever since the secret ending to the final installment in the franchise was discovered, Kratos and Atreus have been on a collision course with the aforementioned god of thunder. Recent trailers for God of War: Ragnarok have helped to underline this even further, while showing how epic the final battle will be. However, because of this confrontational relationship, it is also highly likely that Sif will be hostile to the father and son duo, no matter what.

Considering that the couple has already killed her stepsons Magni and Modi, there is an extensive list of reasons why she would support her husband and the rest of his family. During an interview with the Funko company, Thor’s voice actor, Ryan Hurst, hinted that this would be the case as well. One of the reasons he was apparently drawn to the role was the character’s family ties. While Sif wasn’t specifically named, Hurst did confirm that Thor’s wife will be one of the subjects Ragnarok explores.

At the very least, it looks like fans can expect Sif to be included in the game in reference to Thor. Considering how Kratos’ own wife played a pivotal role in his journey of redemption afterward? God of War 3, it is easy to imagine that this relationship is included in their conflict. After all, Thor from Santa Monica Studio also has quite a bit of innocent blood on his own hands. References to how Sif affected his life might provide an appropriate contrast to Kratos and Faye’s seemingly better relationship.

Sif’s connection to Loki

Besides being a big part of Thor’s characterization, there’s a chance Sif could be included in God of War: Ragnarok also in a physical capacity. Santa Monica Studio has confirmed that each of the nine realms of Norse mythology will be featured in the game, meaning players will get an inside look at Asgard’s political landscape. As a prominent member of the Aesir hierarchy, Sif would be a prime candidate to appear as that process unfolds on screen.

Aspects of Norse mythology support the possibility that this idea may also come true. In most depictions of the ancient religion, it is worth bearing in mind that Sif has a unique relationship with Loki. The namesake of Atreus is said to have once cut off the iconic golden hair of the goddesses in a prank, turning the pair into bitter adversaries. While those dynamics led to the creation of Mjolnir in mythology, something that has already happened in the game, there’s a chance Santa Monica Studio can still put its own spin on the story.

The presence of Fenrir within the marketing campaign for God of War: Ragnarok suggests that Atreus will visit Asgard at some point in the game. In mythology, the giant beast was chained by Tyr for its role in Ragnarok, meaning the boy will likely have to free it. Including Sif in the theoretical escape plan, as a supporting villain and obstacle, could be a way for her to appear physically.

Lady Sif

Even though Santa Monica Studio could choose to record Sif in God of War: Ragnarok within a support capacity, there is another alternative path the studio could take instead. The fact that Brok specifically refers to the Norse goddess of Earth as “Lady Sif” in the 2018 game could be telling. While the moniker has mythological origins, it has been most recently used to describe Marvel’s portrayal of the character.

Significantly, Lady Sif is portrayed in most of the publisher’s comic books and MCU movies as a very capable Asgardian warrior. Unlike her mythological counterpart, which focuses more on the political side of Asgard, these versions of Sif often fought alongside Thor. Based on the structure of Santa Monica Studio’s version of Norse mythology, it’s possible the character could be included in the upcoming sequel in the same way.

That’s largely because Ragnarok represents the end of the Norwegian world. Since it seems likely that Kratos won’t be able to stop the apocalypse from starting, it’s easy to imagine everyone being called to the front lines to help defend Asgard. While that’s probably the inclusion of Sif in… God of War: Ragnarok in a physical capacity, it’s unlikely this scenario would end there. Direct confrontation with Kratos in the form of a boss fight could also be on the cards, especially if the fight with Thor ends with the demise of the god of thunder and the loss of his hammer.
