Sega Mega Drive mini game console

Whose side were you on? (photo: Sega)

Choose a side
One side effect I’ve noticed from so few new games being released right now is that the rivalry between PlayStation and Xbox has faded a bit into the background. The Last Of Us Part 1 came out, was controversial, and yet I haven’t noticed Xbox fans really taking advantage of that, probably because they know their machine has nothing to offer at all.

If you ask me, the Xbox vs PlayStation rivalry has always been a bit tepid and uninteresting. We all know that the best console war was between the Mega Drive and the SNES, for all sorts of reasons: surprisingly different games given the technology, with different specialties; completely different marketing styles; and no clear winner, with one or the other slightly ahead in each country.

It’s the perfect battle, and in those days hardly anyone could afford both, so you had to pick a side. I had a Mega Drive, so I have to say it was better, but I secretly coveted SNES games like Super Metroid and the Donkey Kong Country games. Beautiful memories of a bitterly fought war. Curious which side of the fence other readers were on.

Layers of care
Having Bloober Team make the remake of Silent Hill 2 seems like such a bad, obvious choice. Sure, they’re one of the few developers who specialize in horror, but that doesn’t mean they’re any good. The Medium was terrible, and mostly because it tried to be like Silent Hill and failed completely. Now they’re doing an official game anyway.

Layers Of Fear is also overrated, if you ask me, and while I haven’t played their Blair Witch game, it didn’t get great reviews. It’s just a remake, so if they follow the original game closely enough they might be able to do it, but I’m not confident.

Silent Hill won’t get another chance at such a big time and I’m afraid Konami is ruining it by hiring the wrong people. I understand why a remake makes sense at this stage, but I’d much rather see a new game and probably won’t if this first dive back into the water is a flop.

You have at least a €5 discount
I played the remake of The Last Of Us and initially took my time to check out the graphics, but they never wowed me as much as when I first played the updated version years ago. Unlike Horizon Forbidden West and Immortals Fenyx Rising, which constantly impressed me with the beautiful visuals.

I was also amazed at how much of the story I remembered and soon got bored of it, perhaps because it’s so linear in design. I kept playing until I got to the part where Ellie was still wandering in plain sight of the enemies and they totally ignored her, I thought this would have been fixed as most games don’t have this problem now.

In the end I just went back to Horizon and gave my copy to a friend who has a new baby and has more important things to spend £65 on. Not a waste as he enjoys it because he never played the original.

Dreamcast Maxi
It took me a while to accept the fact that we’ll never get a Dreamcast Mini, but I finally took the plunge and bought an original one off eBay last week.

I never had a Dreamcast the first time, but I did trade my N64 for my friend’s for a while. I played through Sonic Adventure and Shenmue and he played through Zelda: Ocarina Of Time and Majora’s Mask. I would have loved to have my own, we all know how it ended for the Dreamcast, but I remember being really excited about it when it came out; it seemed so much more powerful than the other two home consoles available at the time.

I bought myself Sonic Adventure, Shenmue, Jet Set Radio and Power Stone, they were all quite affordable. Shenmue 2 is the only other game that is definitely on my shopping list right now. Does anyone have strong opinions on games I should definitely try and play? Will Soulcalibur do something for me that Soulcalibur 2 didn’t? I don’t really like shmups/scrolling shooters and I have Skies Of Arcadia Legends, so I’m not going to worry about that, but I’m really open to something else.

GC: Our favorites are Rez, Bangai-O, Power Stone 2, Marvels Vs. Capcom 2 and Samba Da Amigo. Although we are not sure what they are going for these days.

Admit your pleasures
I have to say I really enjoyed reading the article about Saints Row this weekend, it’s good to hear different opinions as long as the player enjoys it, that’s all that matters. I’m honestly getting a little tired of people going on and on about the console wars and how they sell this console or buy another one, so this was a refreshing change. Personally, I don’t think there’s ever been as much choice for gamers as there is now. I’ve been gaming for so long and remember paying stupid money for Mega Drive games (maximum one or two a year), so I’m pretty happy to have a huge backlog of games.

I was trying to think of critically panned games I’ve enjoyed against the grain and wondered if this was a hot topic before? Would be interesting.

GC: We’ve tried a few times, but they never get many responses. We don’t think anyone likes to enjoy games that others consider bad.

Wrong way
Thanks to those in the Underbox who made some suggestions to make Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 2019 and Black Ops Cold War work on my Xbox Series S.

I couldn’t try the suggestions because I refunded both games.

Turns out they’re not on Steam for PC and I had to buy them through the Blizzard store. The campaigns have been downloaded for Modern Warfare 2019 and Black Ops: Cold War.

They both ran flawlessly and ran surprisingly well on my modest video card with no ray tracing.

I have now completed the campaign for Modern Warfare and will tackle the next title (launched only to test if it works).

I really hope other games don’t have this problem. The reason I’ve loved consoles is their simplicity (and exclusive). Turns out my PC was easier for this one!
Commodore fan

External issue
Like Commodore Fan, I’m having the same issue with Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2019. I’m on Xbox Series X and it’s still asking to install content that’s already installed (I even have the disc). I had no issues on my Xbox One S. I’m not sure what caused it, but I’ve seen a suggestion (in that link GC posted) that I shouldn’t install it on an external hard drive.

My copy is currently installed on an external hard drive. I think I’m going to uninstall everything and then install it back on the internal storage or on my 2TB Seagate card. I’ll post back if that works.

Analog Preference
I’m trying to get my hands on a PlayStation 5 Digital Edition – which, given the console is a behemoth, at least makes it a bit smaller. That’s my logic to want a digital PlayStation 5 anyway. I refuse to pay scalper prices or some crazy bundle. I know that GC sometimes reports stock warnings, so I’ll be keeping a close eye on your site for any updates. If you could inquire about the PlayStation 5 digital in particular, it would be greatly appreciated.

The standard PlayStation 5 is available from many retailers such as GAME who offer their usual bundles to drive up the price. However, the digital version appears to be very rare. Perhaps the recent price hike could prompt Sony to release its digital console in larger quantities?

It goes without saying that the digital console is less profitable initially, which is why Sony was reluctant to keep that version back in stock. But I wonder if retailers are also to blame, since digital sales are not getting them anything? At this rate, I might as well wait for the inevitable PlayStation 5 slim.
Anonymously

GC: There’s an inventory check here, but it certainly seems to be a low priority for retail stores and/or Sony.

Inbox is running too
I would love it if Naughty Dog did a pretend play because that would finally get them out of their grim obsession at this point. Other than what the bet is, the game would still be super serious and “grounded” with unicorns taking bad guys apart and the like.

Glad to hear that Microsoft has made power saving mode the standard on Xbox. It certainly wasn’t when I bought my launcher, which I always thought wasn’t right at the time.

This week’s hot topic
The topic for this weekend’s Inbox was suggested by reader Dennis, who asks which retro video game has aged the best?

Retro gaming is big business these days, but so are remasters and remakes, which aim to make older games more appealing to modern audiences, but which game do you think will hold up the best and still be as playable as ever?

How well do the graphics hold up and why do you think they’ve held up better than other contemporaries? Do you still play the game in its original form and if there were a remaster or remake, what would you change?
