The Monday Letters Page really hopes that Crystal Dynamics will bring back Legacy Of Kain, as a reader makes his own Elden Ring DLC.

PLEASE NOTE: We would like to run some features for Black History Month in October and are looking for Black Heritage writers in the UK to submit paid features. If you are interested, you can email us at the address below.

Long-term plan
Six new Assassin’s Creed games? I don’t know what to say except that the obvious seems a bit much. What worries me about these plans is that Ubisoft already has six new games planned (well, four real games and two mobile apps) and yet they have no idea how they’ll interact with fans.

I’m sure this is just the reality of game development, but what if people go wild for Mirage with no role-playing features? What if Jade is super unpopular and everyone hates Assassin’s Creed Infinity? Maybe the horror game will turn out to be an unexpected hit and they have nothing to follow up on because the next three games are already planned to come after that?

I couldn’t help but think of that Dark Universe cinematic universe that should follow The Mummy. They had all these big plans, with all the upcoming movies and actors signed up. The only problem is that no one liked the first one and the whole thing ended up being scrapped.

I’m not saying that will happen with Assassin’s Creed Infinity, but it looks like you’re exposing yourself to trouble, not to mention that it feels more like an assembly line than ever. Which is probably unfair to the games themselves, some of which sound interesting.

Unavoidable Losses
If the Activision Blizzard deal goes through, do you really think Sony will lose massively? Personally, I think Sony will do just fine. They currently rank first for digital sales, console sales, and revenue. They have a large group of developers in their portfolio who make quality products. They also have huge franchises like Spider-Man that sell millions.

Granted, Microsoft will make some profit, but not enough to stop people from buying Sony products. Healthy competition is good and maybe this will force Sony to develop their own quality first person shooter to challenge Call Of Duty. They recently bought Bungie so they already have a perfect fit available.

GC: Microsoft’s acquisition of one of the largest third-party publishers in the world would always be a blow to Sony. But it’s Game Pass that remains the biggest threat to PlayStation, especially as the revamped PS Plus shows how Sony is unable to compete directly with it.

Third time bad luck
I noticed you have a few stories about the Steam Deck and wanted to know if you reported any issues with the device?

I pre-ordered mine the first minute they went on sale and received my first in June. It is now September and I am on my third device. Since July 3rd, when I first brought up my issue, I’ve been dealing with Steam’s slow and painful RMA process. I received my third device last week which is also having issues and will probably need to be replaced again. All problems seem to stem from poor quality control. I’ve had issues like squeaking fan noise, a foreign object under the screen, and a problem with the Steam button.

I am now without the device longer than I actually have it at home.

All the reviews seem very positive which they should be as the device is great but I don’t see any reports of issues so I don’t know if I’m just unlucky or if the issues are just not a focus for media companies.

GC: Yours is the first we’ve had, but we can’t pretend that many people have ever written about it.

Sometimes generous
On the one hand, Nintendo is ridiculously generous with adding new/old tracks to the base Mario Kart 8 at a very reasonable price.

On the other hand, they’re releasing Splatoon 3 at full price years after the last one, but it seems like not much has changed except for some new weapons and new maps.

I think I’m going to put off Splatoon for a while, because “more of the same” doesn’t appeal to me, not if I’m already hugely behind to work through.

Ongoing Legacy
My name is Francisco, I am from Puerto Rico and I am a fan of the Legacy Of Kain: Soul Reaver series. I’ve been waiting for a remake or a remastered version of the game and I really want that game made. I really hope that game comes back.
Francisco

I’ve been hoping for years that a company would revive my favorite PlayStation console franchise and it’s not Final Fantasy 7, it was and always is the Legacy Of Kain franchise. I hope with this little email I can at least make a statement that I really want this franchise to return and continue what was discontinued years ago. Please, I beg you, bring back Legacy Of Kain, we need one more than ever.

Skip the first one
All the news about Legacy Of Kain is encouraging – it seems gamers and developers alike haven’t forgotten about it.

Still, I can’t help but worry a little. The fact is, even though studios produce games, it’s the individuals working as a team that make them. The Crystal Dynamics of today is different from the Crystal Dynamics of when the games were released, so would a new game in terms of writing be good? Hopefully Amy Hennig has left enough notes and they won’t be ignored.

As for what project they would do, although I think a remake of Blood Omen, to bring it in line with the others, would be a good idea, I think that might be complicated. Although Crystal Dynamics now owns the Legacy Of Kain IP, I think Blood Omen is still owned by Silicon Knights, and if so, they should entice Dennis Dyack (for lack of a better term) into getting admitted.

DLC included
There has recently been a discussion in the Inbox about possible DLC for Elden Ring. Like most fans of the game, I’d be really excited to receive this one, especially since the DLC for all of From’s previous games was excellent.

I completed Elden Ring a few months ago and recently rewatched it to get all the Legendary items. In addition, I already feel like I’m playing some DLC for the game, albeit it’s free and part of the game itself! There are so many areas and bosses that I was not aware of before that I am now entering and having a great time again.

There have been stories in the past of some game companies scrapping content originally planned for a game so that they can sell it as DLC and generate additional revenue. Van seem to do the opposite of this! Hopefully this will remain so in the future as their years of critical success has finally been matched by commercial success.

bad memories
Will you be reviewing the new Fallout 76 DLC? It’s the only Fallout game I’ve never tried, so I think it’s a good chance to jump in and try it, so it would be great to get an idea if you think the game in a good place these days.
Chris

GC: We’ll see if we can find someone to do it, but the memories of the game at launch are still burning.

post-violence
Responding to Stephen’s post on The Last Of Us Part 1 which is too depressing. Admittedly, I’ve never played The Last Of Us, being on Xbox, but I can certainly agree with his feeling that the past few years have probably changed the way I game forever. Now I don’t want to play violent horror games or even play a lot of shooters because of the post-pandemic they’re giving me (anxious!).

This is especially true for online multiplayer games, where I feel like I’m overly competitive, like I’m not good enough, or feel like I’m dying over and over. Recently, I found myself going through puzzle games and story-driven stories that helped me rediscover the love of gaming. Road 96 was excellent and I also really enjoyed Superliminal recently. The pandemic has absolutely changed the way I game forever.

Inbox is running too
Just a quick note that there are currently (Friday night) 11 Splatoon amiibo (!) in stock in the Nintendo Store UK. They didn’t show up in stores until this morning, as I spend most days looking for amiibo I’d like.
Andreas J.

Why does EA never learn? We don’t want a Battlefield story campaign! Stop wasting your time with junkies that people don’t want and focus instead on giving you a good multiplayer game. If you did, a story campaign might make sense, but you didn’t and it doesn’t!

This week’s hot topic
The topic for this weekend’s Inbox was suggested by reader Gooch, who asks what is your favorite fantasy video game?

To be clear, that means anything with at least a vaguely Tolkien-esque feel, as popularized by Lord of the Rings, as well as low fantasy settings like Game of Thrones, so it doesn’t necessarily have orcs and elves in it.

How appealing do you find these kinds of fantasy settings and do they affect the games you are interested in regardless of their gameplay? What else do you think could be done with the concept and which next-gen fantasy games are you most looking forward to?
