The story

In the world of chainsaw man, devils are something you can see every day. They come in different sizes, looks and above all different names. You see, the devils in chainsaw man are a manifestation of humanity’s collective fear. The stronger that sense of fear of certain objects is, the more powerful the devils would be. Therefore, a Bat Devil is stronger than a Chicken Devil.

The one thing all these devils have in common is the fact that they prey on humans. Of course there are devils who would rather be friendly to people, but the vast majority of them enjoy the taste of human flesh. So to fight those dangerous fiends, the government created the Public Safety Devil Hunter. This is a group of strong and trained people who contract with a certain devil to hunt and kill wild devils. Together with devil hunters from the private sector, they form the pillars that protect the public from the attack of the devil.

The story follows a young man named Denji. He is an orphan who lives in poverty and has to do all kinds of chores to pay off the debt of his deceased parents. One of those jobs is a freelance devil hunter. With the help of his friend Pochita, a cute chainsaw devil, Denji tries to defeat as many weak devils as possible every day. Unfortunately, Denji lost his life in one of his fights. To save his friend, Pochita sacrifices his life and makes a contract with Denji. So start the life of a man with a chainsaw head who calls himself the… chainsaw man.

The characters

As with other action shounen series out there, the characters of chainsaw man come in a set of three. There are Denji, the Chainsaw Man, Aki Hayakawa, a public devil hunter assigned to watch over Denji, and Power, a wild and childish girl who happens to be the Blood Devil. Supervising them all is the charismatic and beautiful woman named Makima. The only reason Denji agreed to join the Public Safety Devil Hunter is to get closer to Makima.

In addition to them, there are also a handful of other devil hunters who will make an appearance from time to time. Likewise, there are also several prominent devils who go into battle to hunt Denji. Most of these supporting characters would only appear for a short period of time, but therein lies the strength of chainsaw man. Because even if that particular character only appears for one short storyline, they can still leave a deep impression on your heart.

The animation

The studio responsible for the adaptation chainsaw man is MAPPA. Founded in 2011, MAPPA is responsible for some of the most popular anime loved by fans around the world such as Jujutsu Kaisen, Kakegurui, Yuri On Iceand the last season of Attack on Titanto name a few.

MAPPA is known for their sharp and vibrant animations, and judging by the trailers for chainsaw man that we have seen so far, we can expect great animations for this series as well. Not only that, based on their portfolio, it’s clear that MAPPA is one of the few studios that can faithfully process all the craziness that happened in Chainsaw Man manga on screen.
