One by one, each ax thrower has risen to try to win the grand prize of the new XBOX console on the WTX Ax Throwing mobile unit at the Permian Basin Fair and Expo.

That or just to have some fun.

The Permian Basin Fair and Expo started Friday and will continue for the rest of this week, ending Sunday.

From rodeos to concerts to all the rides and funnel cakes, there’s something for just about everyone to enjoy this year at the fair, which is located in the Ector County Coliseum and the surrounding area.

That includes ax throwing.

Dianna Davis, one of the people who helps run the ax-throwing unit at the fair all weekend, says that a lot of people stopped by and had fun all weekend.

“It’s been pretty successful,” Davis said. “(Sunday) evening we started getting a bunch of kids over here to throw. Children from 8 years old can throw. It got busier as the evening progressed. Many people enjoyed it. They had never been able to throw an ax before, so it was a good experience. It was amazing.”

In case you’re wondering: no one has won the XBOX yet, at least not as of Monday afternoon.

“That’s one of the prizes,” Davis said. “We have had a number of people very close. You must hit all five rosy targets. There are different prizes but you have to hit all five in the red. We’ve had some people score three out of five, but we haven’t let anyone win the prize yet.”

That doesn’t stop people from taking on that challenge.

“I had a guy who might as well have bought an XBOX with the number of throws he threw,” Davis said with a laugh.

Either way, carnival goers have had fun throwing axes.

For recently graduated Permian High School, Caden Garcia, he can confirm that it’s harder than it looks.

“It was harder than I thought,” Garcia said. “But it was pretty sick because I’ve never thrown an ax before. It was a good experience. It was quite fun.”

He may not have won another XBOX, but he said he didn’t play for it.

“Sadly, I wish I was,” Garcia said with a laugh.

Garcia was at the Permian Basin Fair and Expo on Monday with his friends and family and enjoyed not only the weather but all the entertainment on offer for one low price.

Monday was Dollar Day, where attendees entered for just $1.

“You have a lot of fun games like throwing the ax and the rides and good food like funnel cakes,” Garcia said. “In addition, it was a one dollar admission fee today.”

Tagen Salgado, who comes from Stanton, was also at the fair with his family on Monday. He also took part in ax throwing.

“I just stepped out and threw it,” Salgado said. “It was fun… It was a little hard.”

Olivia Torres, 9, of Midland, was another ax thrower.

“It’s fun,” Torres said. “I like being able to hit the target.”

She said she hasn’t been able to hit the targets much, but she still enjoys throwing axes.

“It’s cheap entertainment,” Torres said.

Davis says she’s spent the weekend at the carnival seeing people coming and throwing and others with no experience.

“We’ve seen people throw some of the heavier axes before,” Davis said. “We have our small metal ones here. We’ve also had other people who have never thrown axes before, but who have done very well. There’s not much to it, maybe a little technique, but it’s a good time and anyone can do it.”

Other fairgoers have been busy enjoying the rides and spending time with family.

“It was really cool,” said Jeremy Dixon, who was at the fairgrounds with his family on Monday. We just come out and hang out and every time we can hang out with our family it’s great. Our family is getting older. It has something for everyone.”

The opening day of last Friday was characterized by a bit of rainy weather.

However, since then the clouds have cleared and the sun has returned.

“Everything has been fine,” said Stacy Price, who runs one of the smoothie drinking stations at the carnival. “The weather is cooperating, so it’s been good.”
