The Werewolf by Night character has a long history in Marvel Comics, and one that fans old and new will love to see adapted in the MCU in his special way. There’s plenty to know about the character and mythos, and the trailer for Werewolf at night definitely adds a twist to the story.

GAMERANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

8/8 Jack Russell

Not to be confused with the dog breed, Jack Russell is a victim of the werewolf curse in Marvel Comics. The night before Jack Russell’s 18th birthday, on the first night of the full moon, Jack’s curse ran into an inheritance, and he became a fearsome werewolf. This came from the longstanding curse of Jack Russell’s family, coming from the name Russoff, which came from Transylvanian barons and scholars.

Jack Russell has since become the most famous werewolf in Marvel Comics, pitted against the likes of Spider-Man and other iconic Marvel characters. The Disney Plus feature will definitely be an interesting take on the character and really expand the mythos into live action, with a good amount of fear and werewolf action.

7/8 The return of Moon Knight?

Even though Disney Plus and the MCU have received Moon Knight before Werewolf at night, it was the last character to first appear in Marvel. Werewolf by Night had a long-running series of comics, with Moon Knight making his debut as a character in Werewolf at night problem #32. Here, Moon Knight was an antagonist, who was determined to hunt Werewolf at night.

This wouldn’t be the last time the characters met, as they have had a long-standing feud and rocky relationship in the comics. It would be extremely interesting and great fun to see Oscar Isaac return as Moon Knight for the Disney Plus special of Werewolf at night.

6/8 Elsa Bloodstone

A character who plays a prominent role in the Werewolf at night comics is Elsa Bloodstone. This character was also briefly seen in the Disney Plus feature trailer, but if it’s the same Elsa Bloodstone, fans are in for something. This character resembles Van Helsing’s character, as Elsa resumes her family mantle of hunting and fighting monsters.

Elsa Bloodstone resumes her father’s legacy by fighting the monsters that plague the Marvel universe. She also has a choker, which grants her superhuman strength, speed and regenerative abilities. This makes Elsa a real threat to monsters, as her strength will prevent most forms of physical harm.

5/8 Friend of Morbius

Comics are home to the weird and wonderful, and Werewolf by Night follows that trend a lot. Every comic in the Marvel universe usually has a team-up that seems random, but somehow works. One set of characters that seem to have an interesting bond is Morbius and Werewolf by Night. The two have worked together before, with Morbius even promising to create a cure for Jack Russell from Spider-Man’s blood.

It would be hugely interesting to see the MCU leaning into the monster side of their universe, but since Sony owns the rights to Morbius, it looks like the character will remain in the Sony universe, as will be the result of many “Morbin” time” memes.

4/8 The Existence of Dracula

As if the Marvel universe couldn’t be stranger, the introduction of Werewolf by Night pretty much confirms the existence of vampires and Dracula himself. Dracula appears in a few Marvel comics, but is known for being responsible for Werewolf by Night’s primary existence.

Jack Russell owes his great ancestry to his werewolf curse, as Baron Grigori Russoff was bitten by a female werewolf after attempting to stab Dracula through the heart. Getting bitten by a werewolf begins Lycanthropy’s curse that the public sees in Werewolf at night.

3/8 The Midnight Sons

Thanks to Doctor Strange, nine beings associated with the occult joined a mystical team, like the Avengers, but each with their own magical abilities. The members of the Midnight Sons can be random and vary from strip to strip, but a common character involved with the group is Werewolf by Night.

The fact that Werewolf by Night could share a hero team with Doctor Strange paves the way for more team-up movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With the Midnight Sons, audiences would see a tough ramp into the occult side of the Marvel universe, where Werewolf by Night would feel right at home.

2/8 The Time Deviation Authority

Ties to the TVA in the Marvel Comics are pretty loose when it comes to Werewolf by Night, but what’s clear is that the Disney Plus trailer almost confirms that the Time Variance Authority is interfering with Werewolf by Night. The characters featured in the trailer look like: Loki Season 1, complete with their armor and sci-fi batons. However, their fate seems rather gory against the titular werewolf character.

It is not known what the TVA is doing in the Werewolf at night function, but one thing’s for sure, it’s going to be a great ride. Many speculate that Werewolf at night doesn’t take place in the main Marvel universe, given how mystical the feature is thus far.

1/8 Live Action Man Thing

Perhaps the biggest revelation in the Werewolf at night trailer is that of Man-Thing. This character makes a brief appearance in the trailer, but there’s no denying his appearance. Man-Thing used to be a doctor, Theodore Sallis. Man-Thing bears responsibility for the Nexus of All Realities and acts as its sole guardian.

Man-Thing has been in many Marvel comics and is even a prominent member of Midnight Sons. Here, Man-Thing is said to have collaborated with the likes of Doctor Strange and even Werewolf by Night. It will be quite the show when the two characters meet in live action, considering how scary both characters look.
