NEWARK, New Jersey – The Devils will face the New York Islanders in the team’s second pre-season game in as many days. Today’s lineup will look completely different from Monday’s group, as New Jersey has split its squad in two to prevent players from playing in preparation for back-to-back days.

Holtz warms up

Any scouting report on Alexander Holtz will call his deadly shot; however, in the forward’s nine games with the Devils last season, the 7th overall 2020 draft pick was unable to find the back of the net. With a season of professional hockey in North America on the books and a major off-season, Holtz is starting to show that the first NHL goal may be just around the corner.

Holtz has had a strong start to his training camp, scoring in both his team’s scrimmages, while playing on par with Ondrej Palat and Jack Hughes. All three of these players attended the morning skate, so it looks like they’ll be able to play together again tonight.

“We set out to see what Hughes’ speed and creativity could bring to Holtz’s game,” said Ruff along the lines of Palat, Hughes and Holtz. “Also a guy like Palat plays the game right and can be a key figure offensively, can be a key figure outside the puck. You have a guy there who can help out for both players (Hughes and Holtz) in some defensive situations. On the attacking side, we’re just looking for some chemistry.”

“I think that obviously helps a lot, playing with such high-level players as Hughes and Palat. Helps my game, I’m just going to try to work hard there, create space for those guys and use my chance,” said Holtz the next morning. skate.

First look at the latest devils

Devils General Manager Tom Fitzgerald has been very busy this off-season strengthening the team’s defensive core and adding some missing pieces on offense and in the net. Five of those new faces are expected tonight: Erik HaulaOndrej Palat, Brendan Smith, John Marinoand Vitek Vanecek.

All of these players have played against the Devils at Prudential Center before and remember it was a tough place to play as an opponent.

“I never thought it would be an easy place to play,” Haula said Tuesday morning. “The team comes out warm at the start and they play well at home. It was a heavy building that I always thought I would play in.”

Palat, who plays for his second NHL team in his career, agreed with Haula’s thoughts on Prudential Center.

“It was just always a difficult place to play, always difficult matches. That’s what I remember.”

Goal trending Split

In last night’s pre-season game, Mackenzie Blackwood and Nico Daws each had strong showings against the Canadiens. Tonight, Vitek Vanecek and Akira Schmid look to continue that trend against the islanders. Both goalkeepers will see time in the preseason, according to head coach Lindy Ruff.

“They are both going to play. We will persevere (in the meantime) a bit.”

Hischier update

Devil Captain Nico Hischier did not return to Monday’s game after the first period due to cramps, team officials said. Coach Ruff had an update on the center after Tuesday’s morning skate.

“Last night was more of a precaution, he will have some tests today to make sure everything is okay. I had a real talk with him, which makes me believe he will play again in pre-season, but you never know where some of these things lead.”
