A few days ago, Cyberpunk 2077 became a topic of discussion after the announcement of CD Projekt Red. Although a brand new expansion has been announced for 2023, older generation console users will not be able to enjoy its benefits. CD Projekt Red has decided that the game will no longer be actively supported on older consoles after the release of the existing patch 1.6.

The developers didn’t explicitly elaborate on the exact reason behind their decision, but the speculation was in line with the performance. Most fans believe the decision is correct if CD Projekt Red wants the game to reach its potential. Some feel that the game is not made for the hardware of the older generation consoles.

Important note for fans of Cyberpunk 2077: patch 1.6 will be the last to be supported by the old generation consoles (Phantom Liberty is also only for PC, XSX/S and PS5) Coming in the future – a complete overhaul of the police system – overhauled vehicle-to-vehicle combat https://t.co/EtlSuEjeNS

What makes the decision even more interesting is that Cyberpunk 2077 will remain available on older generation consoles. It will likely continue to receive minor updates, but CD Projekt Red’s focus is crystal clear.

They may not be alone as other developers are likely to join them in doing something similar with their games. While the reasons may vary, it is not very difficult to understand why such decisions may be made.

Cyberpunk 2077 and its improvement could signal developers to stay away from older generation consoles in the future

Cyberpunk 2077 has always remained a classic tale of unfulfilled potential, despite the improvements of recent times. When the first trailer came out, it generated incredible hype. CD Projekt Red came with The Witcher saga and fan expectations were very high.

Even with a series of delays, fans were ready to wait, wanting to play a perfect and unhurried game. Despite the delays, the release was disappointing as it missed several promised items. It was full of terrible bugs, glitches and more.

Fast forward since then, and players now have a much more refined version of the game. The next-generation upgrade has been instrumental in giving Cyberpunk 2077 a much-needed overhaul. This was perhaps the biggest reason CD Projekt Red made the decision.

The Xbox Series XLS and the PlayStation 5 were released in late 2020 and will complete their second anniversary in a few months. Both brands are working to release upgraded versions, further enhancing their capabilities. In some ways, their capabilities are closest to the powerful gaming PCs available on the market.

If CD Projekt Red is to continue supporting older generation consoles, it will have to find a compromise with all of its products. They will either have to release two separate versions of the same content or make it slightly less than its potential so that it can run smoothly on all devices.

Gotham Knights should set an example. No more cross-gen games! Only current gen.

As the current generation of consoles become more widely available, developers will start thinking more about them and how to optimize their games accordingly. For starters, making games isn’t a cheap activity, and supporting an aging platform makes even less sense.

Earlier this year, Gotham Knights announced that it would only be available on current-gen consoles. This sparked resentment and anger among the community as several gamers felt bereft. However, the developers have shown why they decided to compromise, even if it infuriated their fan base.

Halo Infinite Forge delayed, but Forge is fully functional and Forge creations are playable in the retail version. No infection mode, but counterfeiters made it. Split screen for shelf co-op, but it’s playable. I am confused. #HaloInfinite https://t.co/dwdgO2fWt5

While Halo Infinite recently announced plans to scrap split-screen co-op, several players blamed the old-gen consoles. They believe that 343 Industries has their hands tied because they want to support both generations of consoles. This has been said about Cyberpunk 2077 in the past and it seems CD Projekt Red has finally listened.

Whether Cyberpunk 2077 will be the promised game is only a matter of time. Even after the current generation, CD Projekt Red will have to avoid the mistakes they made in the past. However, Cyberpunk 2077 could be the time of a massive shift in the industry as more developers and publishers look to the benefits of dumping the older consoles from Xbox and PlayStation.
