Blackbeard, aka Marshall D. Teach, is one of the most powerful up and coming pirates in the world A piece currently. Currently, he is easily considered the strongest of all members of the worst generation. After the Summit War in Marineford and the death of Yonko Whitebeard, he was able to reach the rank of Yonko quite quickly. The story hasn’t focused much on Blackbeard yet and he’s a character who’s still quite shrouded in mystery, which is understandable as he’s being built up as the ultimate antagonist in the Final Saga of A piece.

Now that the Wano War was over, fans finally got to see a little bit of him with A piece 1059, where he was seen on a quest to kill the Pirate Empress, Boa Hancock, and steal her Devil Fruit, the Mero Mero no Mi. While he was unsuccessful in this attempt, thanks to the intervention of Dark King Rayleigh, fans did get to see some new revelations about him, such as his 3.996 billion berry bounty.

Blackbeard’s Rise To Infamy

Blackbeard’s pirate career began as an apprentice on Whitebeard’s pirate ship. For years Teach grew up under his banner and joined the second division under Portgas D. Ace. While Blackbeard spent years on the ship, his time there was eventually cut short after he escaped the crime of murdering Thatch, the commander of the Fourth Division, in cold blood after giving him a fruit he had been searching for – the Yami Yami no Mi, also known as the most powerful Logia.

After all, this fruit was the real reason he joined this crew. After leaving the crew, Blackbeard started his own pirate crew and eventually wrestled with Luffy’s older brother, Portgas D. Ace, who had gone hunting for him because he felt responsible as the commander of the Second Division. Unfortunately, their duel ended in Ace’s defeat and raised Teach’s status as one of the Shichibukai of the One Piece world. Ace was then captured and handed over to the Navy, which greatly influenced the story.

Despite having a bounty of 0 berries, Marshall D. Teach was awarded the rank of Shichibukai, all thanks to bringing in Ace, who turned out to be Gol D. Roger’s son. At the same time, when Luffy infiltrated Impel Down, he wreaked havoc that allowed Blackbeard to free the Level 6 criminals and have them fight to the death for the chance to join his crew. As such, the most powerful criminals trapped in Level 6 eventually became members of the Blackbeard Pirates.

With his new crew, he went to Marineford, where Ace’s execution took place. The goal was to earn even more power and for that he had a big idea in his head. When Whitebeard was already at his limits, he and his crew delivered the final blow and did the unthinkable. Somehow Blackbeard acquired a second Devil Fruit, the Gura Gura no Mi, known as the most powerful Paramecia. Two years later, he became one of the Yonko of the A piece world, replacing Whitebeard in the process.

Blackbeard’s first bounty

After becoming a Yonko, Blackbeard had obviously received bounties as a pirate. To ensure that, many events came into play. During the Payback War, which took place a year after the Summit War, the Blackbeard Pirates took on the remnants of the Whitebeard Pirates. The victory was eventually won by the Blackbeard Pirates and seemingly after that he became one of the four emperors. Soon after, he began to take control of large areas that once belonged to Whitebeard. As of chapter 1059, it is confirmed that Blackbeard defeated Wang Zhi in the Rocky Port Incident, allowing him to take control of Pirate Island. All these achievements culminated in receiving a massive first bounty of 2,247.6 million berries, the highest known first bounty ever.

Blackbeard’s 3,996 Billion Berry Bounty

Among the new pirates, Blackbeard may well be the most powerful as of now, and his crew only gets stronger with time. In A piece 1059, he was seen looking for a third devil fruit and the one he appeared to see was Boa Hancock’s Mero Mero no Mi. His influence continues to grow as other Yonko, most notably Big Mom and Kaido, were just dethroned by Luffy and his allies, leaving the whole world in shock. While it may be confusing for some fans to see Blackbeard receiving another bounty for seemingly doing nothing, it makes a lot of sense given that his previous bounty was likely awarded to him during the two-year timeskip. This is evidenced by the fact that he fought in the Payback War and was involved in the Rocky Port Incident at the time.

As such, Blackbeard has continued to bolster his crew ever since, but has not taken credit for it. With the change of the era and the fall of two emperors, Kaido and Big Mom, two new candidates in Buggy and Luffy rose to the position of Yonko. As expected, their bounties were re-evaluated, with Luffy receiving a 3 billion berry reward and Buggy a whopping 3.189 billion berries. As such, it would only make sense that the other Yonko also received a raise for their past deeds. Of A piece 1059, Blackbeard’s latest bounty has been confirmed to be 3,996 million berries, and it will only continue to grow as the story moves into its final saga.
