islets is a Metroidvania style game, in which a character named Iko must travel through the many islands in his world to reunite what was once broken and save his land from the fragmented fate it was doomed to. Along the way, he must explore every nook and cranny of his world and face many enemies.
There are quite a lot of people who can jump right in islets and have fun. However, there are also others who may not have a good idea at first what exactly they are doing. Fortunately, there are some beginner tips for these players to know.
7 Exploration is key
islets is a game that revolves around exploration. The game is a Metroidvania after all, so a lot of what a player will do is retreat a lot and make their way to all corners of the globe.
A player must remember to explore the world of islets as much as possible. The only way to find all kinds of items and rare weapons is through the world of islets. That is why a player must try through every nook and cranny of islets hoping to find something to improve with.
6 Returning to old areas can yield new information
When a player goes through a new area for the first time, he combs through each part of the area, finds new content, finishes what he was doing and leaves. There’s usually no reason for a player to return to an area they’ve already been to… unless there’s new content waiting for them.
A big part of Metroidvania games is the fact that a player has a lot through the game. However, a player will be greatly rewarded for going back – as they progress through the game, old areas will gain new content (such as items or a new path unblocked) for them to move through.
5 The invincibility frames are very useful
When Iko takes a roll to dodge a particularly fast attack, there will be a few frames of invincibility that are triggered. These frames will essentially mean that: no Iko can take damage when they run out regardless of which attack is launched on the player.
A player must absolutely take advantage of these frames. Not only do they keep the player safe, but they also stay awake for quite some time after completing a throw.
4 Buy map markers
As with all Metroidvania games, there’s a huge, sprawling map that a player will be given at the start of the game and can use it to get at least a vague idea of where they’re going. Even then, this map can be quite confusing as it is very likely that a player will get lost and not know where he is.
A player must save for map markers to buy them in Sky City. These markers let players know where upgrades are – from HP upgrades to damage upgrades and more, a player will always want to know where new upgrades are.
3 The Sword Smashing skill is really strong
When a player gets used to combat, they will soon find that some moves are better than others. It turns out that the Sword Smashing ability is one of the best moves out there.
While the sword strike can be used to break rocks on the ground, it’s also insanely strong as a true attack move. After a player unlocks their shock wave, this is one of the best moves for killing bosses, thanks to its high damage and multiple hits.
2 Don’t forget to climb walls
Eventually, a player will find out that they can, in fact, climb walls. This is a great way to get to new places they might not be able to go just by walking.
There are all kinds of secret passageways that a player can only encounter by jumping up and climbing walls. Of course, these corridors hold all kinds of secrets – such as rare items or new upgrades – so it’s good to follow them up.
1 There are secret areas everywhere
One of the best things about islets is exactly what awaits a player as they take the time to search for each hidden area in the game. While there are many secret passages that yield rare items, there are also bits of lore scattered throughout the game.
A player looking for 100% islets or just want to get a good idea of the full story, should remember to keep looking around for secret areas. There is always a new place to go and find.
islets is available on Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, Xbox Series X and Series S.
