Movie stars have become some of the most recognizable faces on Earth. With their charm, previous acting experience and sense of familiarity, it’s no surprise that they are often tapped to star in video games. Like movies, actors have provided their likenesses and voice talents to bring characters to life. The dividing line between film and games has become somewhat thin in recent years.
Modern games have used a combination of cinematic trailers, in-game cutscenes, and voice logs to tell their story. The obvious advantage they’ve had with storytelling is that they have more time to work with than your standard two-hour film. Plus, they got you right into the action instead of watching events you have no control over. As games become more and more popular, here’s a rundown of some of the biggest movie stars to appear in video games recently.
7 Keanu Reeves – Cyberpunk 2077
CD Project Red’s Cyberpunk 2077 has maintained its spot as one of the most anticipated games in recent memory. The hype that led to the game’s eventual release in 2020 was unlike anything before. Marketing prominent Keanu Reeves‘ character Johnny Silverhand, a rebellious musician seeking revenge on a mega-corporation known as Arasaka. Reeves helped promote the game, a game for which he recorded about 15 days of dialogue (via IGN). While Cyberpunk 2077 heavily criticized at launch for its myriad of issues, public reception is beginning to turn. Reeves returns for an expansion titled Phantom Libertywhich is scheduled for release in 2023.
6 Brie Larson – Fortnite
Captain Marvel star Brie Larson is not just a hero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She has also become the Paradigm in Fortnitethe lead role in Chapter 3 – Season 4: Paradise. In the season from mid-September to early December 2022, a mysterious substance called “Chrome” began consuming everything on the island. This included the inhabitants of the island, who have become victims of a new evil. It’s up to the Paradigm to collect the survivors and save the world. This was Larson’s first role in a video game, although she’s been playing Fortnite for quite some time.
5 Giancarlo Esposito – Far Cry 6
Giancarlo Esposito dominates the geek culture landscape. He has been part of many beloved franchises, including: the boys, Breaking Bad, Star Warsand the maze runner. If Esposito wasn’t already in a franchise, it seemed like everyone was always trying to cast him. Somehow Esposito found time in his busy career and also appeared in popular video games. Gamers have recognized him as “the dentist” in the 2013 video game Payday 2. In 2021, Esposito Antón Castillo, the ruler of Yara and the main antagonist in Ubisoft’s Far Cry 6.
4 Dwayne Johnson – Fortnite
The story of Fortnite revolved largely around “The Seven”, a team led by a member called “The Foundation” and played by Dwayne Johnson. From rampage until Jumanjic, Johnson’s filmography has built a reputation for Johnson as an action hero. That was the very obvious character archetype for The Foundation. In 2021, DC Comics and Epic Games collaborated on the Batman/Fortnite: Foundation comics. Johnson’s Fortnite Character Met Batman Before Johnson Appeared In Black Adam or DC’s League of Super Pets. Going forward, the Foundation is expected to continue to play a major role in Fortnitethe storyline.
3 John Boyega – Star Wars: Battlefront II
Coinciding with the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedic, John Boyega reprized his role as Finn in Star Wars: Battlefront II. Making Finn look and sound like Boyega allowed the video game to better immerse players in the world of Star Wars. Boyega teamed up with Electronic Arts to promote the game and was featured in a video titled “This is Star Wars Battlefront II.” Even after the game’s release, Boyega occasionally shared clips of himself playing the game on Instagram. Boyega didn’t have to be on a movie set to play Finn.
2 Kit Harington – Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare
Game of Thrones‘ Kit Harington recently published in The Death and Life of John F. Donovan and Marvel Studios’ Eternals. However, before Game of Thrones reaching its eighth season, Harington became a villain in one of the most popular game franchises of all time; Duty. For 2016 Call of Duty: Infinite WarfareHarington was cast as the villainous Rear Admiral Salen Kotch. This was the first villain to play Harington in his career, a character he described as “psychotic and unpredictable” (via TIME).
1 Rosario Dawson – Dying Light 2 Stay Human
Rosario Dawson has appeared in many great movies and television series throughout her career. With her Star Wars Ahsoka Tano’s character, who is getting so much recognition, is likely to appear in a Star Wars video game at some point in the future. Dawson has voiced over eight games, including Lego Dimensions, Ratchet & Clankand the dishonored franchisee. Most recently, Dawson provided the motion capture and voice for Lawan in the 2022s Dying Light 2 Stay Human.
