Paranormal horror movies can be hit and miss. Sometimes the ghosts aren’t that scary, the characters aren’t well developed, and the setting of a haunted house can get tiring. Supernatural movies that target teens can also fall flat, as teen slashers tend to be more fun and terrifying. Slashers are also the types of teen horror movies that are more talked about, thanks to the popularity of the scream and Halloween franchises.

While this sub-genre can be tricky and some movies are definitely too cheesy, there are many supernatural horror movies for teens that deserve to be more appreciated as these movies offer enjoyable stories about high school students dealing with ghosts or things that the rational mind can’t explain easily.

Final destination 3 is the best film in the franchise because the storyline is powerful and the main character Wendy Christensen (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) is recognizable and sweet. Wendy and her friends are ready for a fun night at an amusement park, but when some of her classmates die on the ride, Wendy becomes convinced that death is coming for those who survived.

Watching Wendy mourn her loss is especially touching and this is a horror film that deals with grief in a very clever way. The movie is both a solid supernatural story, as none of the characters know when Death is going to get them, and a teen movie, as Wendy tries to move on from high school while dealing with this horrific trauma.

High school is often tough… and when someone’s best friend is possessed by a demon and starts killing boys, it sure is even worse. Jennifer’s body needs a TV reboot as it is full of strong characters and really creepy scenes. Anita “Needy” Lesnicki (Amanda Seyfried) lives in the shadow of her more confident boyfriend Jennifer Check (Megan Fox) who starts acting quite strange one night.

Jennifer’s body is an underrated teen horror film because Needy’s story is raw and relatable. She can’t believe what’s happening and wishes things would go back to normal as she wants to get through high school in one piece and then move on. The film has scary supernatural elements, but also talks about how far one’s life can deviate from one big event.

There are some unforgettable zombie movie characters and in Warm bodies, meets Julie (Teresa Palmer) R (Nicholas Hoult), a zombie for whom she develops feelings. The film functions as a normal high school romance with obstacles that are different and more interesting than strict parents or a busy schedule that doesn’t always allow romantic dates. It makes sense that Julie is afraid of R and they have a long journey.

Warm bodies works as a supernatural movie about zombies, but also as a story about how different teenagers feel and how sometimes forgetting other people’s expectations is the only way to be happy. Julie and R are a sweet couple and it’s fun to see how everyone reacts to the zombies in town.

It would be great if unfriended had a third movie, like the 2014 movie and its sequel Unfriend: Web from 2018 both are well done. While unfriended Hasn’t been super popular, with a 61% rating on the Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer and an audience rating of 37%, it deserves to be rated more for its story, characters, and the fact that the entire story is told on a computer.

unfriended is a great female-led Blumhouse horror film, exploring the coldness and cruelty of teenage life. Blair Lily (Shelley Hennig) used to be best friends with Laura and when everyone at school started laughing at her, Blair also became a bully. Blair feels guilty, but loves her life with her boyfriend and friends. Blair learns her lesson when it’s too late when Laura’s ghost haunts a group chat one night and starts killing everyone.

freaky is an underrated Blumhouse horror movie and also a supernatural and slasher movie. Millie Kessler (Kathryn Newton) switches bodies with “The Blissfield Butcher”, a serial killer played by Vince Vaughn. The result is a hilarious and chilling tale of high school, growing up, belonging and peer pressure.

While the movie didn’t get that much attention when it was released in 2020, it’s smart, funny, and it definitely has some scary moments and intense kills. Millie doesn’t feel cool or interesting, but she’s doing a great job of standing up for herself and figuring out how to get out of The Butcher’s body and get her life back. If the horror elements were removed, it would make an excellent film about high school life.
