In September 2022, one of the biggest leaks in gaming history appeared. Rockstar Games was hacked and the hacker discovered and released multiple videos and images showing an unfinished build of Grand Theft Auto VI.

The game industry is very secretive and because of this secrecy, the video game industry has always been prone to leaks. Whether the source is a remote hacker or a disgruntled ex-employee, the gaming industry has suffered some major leaks over the years. Below we’ll list 5 of the biggest leaks in gaming history.

After Fallout 3 enjoyed the immense critical and commercial success it achieved, fans of the game around the world eagerly awaited Bethesda’s direct sequel to the 2008 classic. Fallout: New Vegas was also loved, that game was developed by Obsidian Entertainment rather than Bethesda Softworks and was more of an afterthought than a direct sequel.

In December 2013, one of the biggest leaks in gaming history took place. Jason Schreier published an article via Kotaku stating that the popular gaming site had received scripts and character descriptions, as well as other details about the development of Fallout 4. The scripts in question confirmed that for the first time in franchise history, the player’s character would have a voice actor instead of just on-screen text dialogs.

Another of the biggest leaks in gaming history happened in May 2018 when Walmart Canada posted a significant number of placeholder pages on their website for upcoming games to be announced at E3 next month. This essentially gave away all the major upcoming revelations from that year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo.

For those unaware, the weeks leading up to E3 are a feverish time in the echo chamber of video game conversations. Predictions are made on social media and on podcasts and YouTube videos. Some will even say that the speculation leading up to E3 is usually much more fun than the actual show itself. So, Walmart Canada is leaking all of the following Just cause game, to a new one Assassin’s Creed title essentially sucked a lot of the excitement out of the 2018 conferences.

The main problem with making a wildly successful and beloved original IP is that fans of that first game will be about to crave a hint of a sequel. This was the case with The last of us part 2. Although the game had already been officially revealed by Naughty Dog and Sony, important plot details were leaked just a few months before the game’s release.

These leaks include a handful of cutscenes. One of these leaked videos was the pivotal video where Joel is killed by Abby. This meant that one of the biggest twists in the game was ruined before the game was even available to play and one of the biggest leaks in gaming history had taken place.

Anyone following the gaming industry will be well aware that Ubisoft, no matter how hard they try, is seemingly incapable of stopping. Assassin’s Creed is leaked every year before being officially announced. Some years those leaks come from Reddit, sometimes they’re Walmart Canada’s fault, (as mentioned above) and other times an employee is seen working on a presentation for the unannounced game on a public plane. That’s no joke. Believe it or not, it actually happened.

Even as recently as earlier this year, Assassin’s creed mirage(which is the AC game that launched in 2023) was leaked online before it was officially unveiled at this year’s Ubisoft Forward. five separate Assassin’s Creed projects were announced at the Ubisoft Forward event and frankly it’s a surprise that they didn’t leak all five beforehand.

If you’ve been living under a rock, screenshots and a gameplay video appeared online on the 19e of September 2022. While it wasn’t 100% clear at first, the video showed a female character robbing a restaurant (it was very reminiscent of the robbery scene in Pulp Fiction).

The gameplay looked like it was set in the Rockstar Advanced Game Engine (RAGE). This game engine was also used in the development of both Grand Theft Auto IV and Grand Theft Auto Vas well as both Red Dead Redemption spell.

A few days after the images were leaked, Jason Schreier confirmed the legitimacy of the leaks via Twitter. The leaks were then further confirmed when Rockstar itself made a statement about the security breach. Since then, the alleged teenage offender has been apprehended in Oxfordshire, London, and appeared in court on September 29.e to plead not guilty to the charge of computer abuse before a judge.
