With less than two months until the release of Gotham Knights on October 21, fans are getting more and more excited to take on Gotham’s worst villains. And while the master of fear, Scarecrow, may or may not appear in the game, the sinister Talons should easily serve to add a bit of a horror element to the game.
Horror games are known for their creepy nightmarish fuel bosses that leave gamers awake at night. But these terrifying bosses aren’t limited to the horror genre; There are plenty of bosses in non-horror games whose looks, fighting mechanics and line delivery can easily frighten gamers who aren’t prepared for them.
The Leviathan (Borderlands 2)
Borderlands 2 is definitely more comedic action game than horror, but the various monsters and monster bosses that roam Pandora can be quite terrifying.
One example is the Leviathan, a huge, worm-like beast that serves as the final boss in one of the game’s DLC. Its attacks can deal major, long-lasting damage to attacking Vault Hunters, while the summoned sandworm minions can pop up at any point during the fight, causing some minor jumps. The appearance of the Leviathan itself makes the Graboids of vibrations look friendly.
The Thorian (Mass Effect)
Mass effect can force players to make important choices that could affect future games and battle bosses that are very difficult to fight. One of the creepiest bosses is the Thorian, a plant-like creature with mind control abilities who has taken over a colony.
When Commander Shepard confronts the beast, players are subjected to a horrific monster with tiny mouth tentacles and beady eyes. It doesn’t help that it has countless humanoid creatures that players can swarm and kill in seconds, with the monster above watching them all with that nightmare-fueled face.
Scarecrow (Batman: Arkham Asylum)
Scarecrow has always been one of Batman’s greatest and one of his oldest villains. Given his fear gas and deep creepiness, fans hoped his appearance in Batman Arkham Asylum would be as terrifying as they had hoped.
Fortunately, the fans were not disappointed. Filled with multiple hallucinations – including one involving Bruce Wayne’s parents in Arkham’s morgue – that are sure to startle players, Scarecrow’s boss fights are some of the most terrifying in the game. Arkham franchisee. The absolutely nightmarish appearance of the giant Scarecrow in these battles is enough to give any casual gamer nightmares.
Pandora (Revelations: Persona)
For those who want a truly creepy creature of nightmares to haunt them, Pandora would be the creature to watch, as the last boss in Revelations: Persona. This monster is an absolute fuel beast from a nightmare, with multiple arms and legs sticking out all over his body and two heads.
The first head has the face of a human girl, while the other has a creepy mouth and a long red tongue. Pandora’s sack-like torso looks like little spider monsters could explode out of it at any moment, adding even more terror to this amalgamation of monstrosity.
Psycho-Mantis may not look as scary as other video game villains, but his gameplay mechanics totally make up for it. Psycho-Mantis’ psychic abilities allow him to break through the fourth wall, giving him the power to tamper with the game controller and the player’s screen.
Not only that, but it will also read the memory cards on the game console, allowing it to talk to players about the other saved games on the card, such as Castlevania and Vandal Hearts. Gamers not prepared for Metal Gear Solid are sure to be shocked by the abilities of Psycho-Mantis.
Dead Hand (Ocarina Of Time)
Games by The Legend of Zelda franchise isn’t scary in general, but Dead Hand is definitely a boss that changes that idea. The flabby, gray matter of a Dead Hand’s body is just the beginning of his terror, as his hands are nothing but nails and his face is just a gaping, tooth-filled mouth with black eyes.
In combat, Dead Hand lurks underground, forcing Link to be grabbed by his invincible arms to burst him out of the ground. One wrong move and the monster delivers an alarming bite to Link’s head.
Nihilanth (half-life)
With a sequel considered one of the best episodic video games ever, half-life is a great game for any gamer. But his latest boss, the Nihilanth, is completely and utterly terrifying.
It looks like a giant floating baby with grayish skin and three arms with dangling creepy fingers. It may not look that dangerous, but it can shoot high-damage electric orbs and teleportation orbs that teleport the player to other parts of the lair, usually populated by even more enemies. What makes him worse is that he is notoriously difficult to kill, as he is usually invincible for much of the fight.
Monster Ock (Spider-Man: The Video Game)
Both Doc Ock and Carnage are some of Spider-Man’s worst enemies. But when their powers combine, they become a terrifying nightmare known as Monster Ock.
Monster Ock looks terrifying, with Carnage’s signature red symbiote exterior, but with Doc Ock’s mechanical tendrils. While Spider-Man doesn’t actually fight him and just runs away from Monster Ock in the series, it’s still terrifying to see the Carnage-Doc Ock hybrid quickly chasing the heroic web-slinger with only murder on his mind.
Giant Dianoga (Shadows Of The Empire)
Star Wars is filled with many terrifying Kaiju-like creatures, including the dianoga, the underwater monster that Luke, Leia, and Han encountered in the trash compactor on the Death Star.
A massive version of the dianoga appears as a boss in the sewer level in Shadows of the Empire, and for gamers it’s a completely terrifying thing to see. The prominent harvest angels are just the tip of the iceberg, as the giant dianoga also has a gaping maw of sharp teeth resembling the sarlaac and a mass of tentacles ready to drag players to their untimely demise.
Death Sword (The Legend Of Zelda: Twilight Princess)
Video game bosses can be scary enough if the gamers can see them, but sometimes the boss is invisible to human eyes, like Death Sword in The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.
At the start of the boss fight, Death Sword looks like nothing more than a swinging sword. When gamers transform Link into his wolf form, they finally get to see Death Sword’s true form: a creepy, horned ghost with sharp, pointy teeth and a murderous intent to kill Link. It’s a chilling thought to watch, especially since, at least in the beginning, gamers can only see this nightmare with Wolf Link’s heightened senses.
