With Nintendo’s latest direct revealing over a dozen exciting new games for late 2022 and 2023, there are plenty of great games just around the corner. Some of them will probably have fantastic stories and great characters.
While video games are not always known for their incredible prose, many games also have great quotes. The quotes can be inspiring, saddening, or just generally thought-provoking. However, a great quote from a video game is both meaningful and memorable. From Nintendo to PC to Sony, many games have quotes that make the public think.
“Steel wins weapons. Gold wins wars.”‘
— Davion, Dota2.
dota was the original multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game, and dota 2 introduced many fantastic characters such as the Dragon Knight: Davion. In the actual game, Davion’s infusion of dragon’s blood gave him great strength.
Davion’s quotes befit a war-torn knight, and one of them in particular is great for anyone to remember, both in fantasy and real life. While the quote can clearly be taken in a literal sense, it also has meaning in a metaphorical sense. In many games, a consistent economy beats a devastating attack power.
“Seek strength. The rest will follow.”
— Vendrick, Dark Souls 2.
dark souls games are notorious for having the toughest content in the industry, but they are also known for their unique open world experiences and great story.
While Vendrick’s quote itself is meaningful, it’s even more powerful when it comes from a king. Vendrick, an optional boss battle, was a king who conquered far and wide. However, his quote applies to all walks of life. If one wants to get a result in any field, he must first take his skills in that field to the highest possible level.
“There is nothing more beautiful and terrifying than innocence.”
— Ghetsis, Pokemon.
The pokemon franchise has made many exciting announcements related to: Scarlet & Violet recently, but it will be hard for any story to top that Black and white.
Ghetsis was a fantastic villain, but few characters in the series were more captivating than N. Under Ghetsis’ manipulation, N knocked out the Pokémon League and nearly defeated the main character. However, when Ghetsis’s plans are finally revealed, he has a nefarious quote reminding fans that N’s innocence was both his virtue and his downfall.
“Those who run from death stood still in life.”
— Kindred, League of Legends.
The hit MOBA League of Legends is one of the most popular online games in the world and has over 150 champions to choose from. One of those champions is Kindred, the embodiment of death.
Kindred has many quotes about death, and some of them are surprisingly inspiring. Kindred reminds fans to chase their dreams and leave no regrets. Kindred’s messages are delivered with the chilly poetics you’d expect from such an elegant portrait of the Grim Reaper, and the Hunter’s words are something many could learn from.
“There is no sadder creature than a man who cannot arouse jealousy.”
— Ringabel, Bravely Default.
Brave standard is one of the most underrated JRPGs of all time, and Ringabel is arguably the most iconic character in the entire series. An extremely powerful traveler who suffers from amnesia, Ringabel’s confidence and charisma are his signature traits.
While the quote is used to refer to Ringabel personally, it works in the context of all genders and identities. Ringabel reminds fans to have confidence in themselves in his typical charismatic way. Ideally, everyone should work to become the type of person who will spark at least a little jealousy. It’s a silly and playful quote, but a meaningful one.
“A smile is better suited to a hero.”
— Haurchefant, Final Fantasy XIV.
Final Fantasy XIV has taken the crown as the best MMORPG on the market. It is the second expansion, Skywardis the best expansion in the entire series.
There are few characters in Final Fantasy who are as loyal to the Warrior of Light as Haurchefant. After risking his life to save the protagonist, Harchefant requests him to see the Warrior of Light smile for his final moments. The quote is incredibly heartbreaking, but also carries a lot of meaning about different ways of grieving.
“People with exactly the same views as you just don’t exist.”
— Seteth, Fire Emblem.
Fire Emblem Engage was one of Nintendo’s biggest recent announcements. However, many fans still do not have all the routes of the very extensive Fire Emblem: Three Houses.
Three houses features four different routes, each corresponding to one of three different houses in a military training school in a monastery. The convent’s second-in-command, Seteth, talks to his student Felix about the boy’s strong views. No matter what opinions people have, Seteth knows that no two people will agree with everything.
“My friends are my strength.”
— Sora, Kingdom Hearts.
From giant keys to battles with Disney villains to love triangles with childhood friends, Kingdom Hearts has just about something for everyone. The main character, Sora, often relies on his allies in tricky situations.
Even without his signature Keyblade, Sora’s bonds take him far. Since the main character of the series likes to remind his opponents, he does not need a weapon as long as he has his friends. It is a good message for everyone, even outside the context of the battle. Relying on others is a big part of what it means to be human.
“Time passes. People move. Like the flow of a river, it never ends.”
— Sheik, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
The sequel to Breath of the Wild and the cast has been one of the hottest topics in gaming, but Zelda fans should never forget one of the best games in the franchise: Ocarina of Time.
Sheik, a disguise for an alternate timeline version of Princess Zelda, serves as a guide for Link throughout much of the game. Their quote about time is part of a larger monologue that summarizes Link’s journey in Ocarina. Sheik reminds fans that life is metamorphosing and no one is immune to the changes that come with time.
‘Do not be sorry. To be better.”
— Kratos, god of war.
god of war is one of the greatest PlayStation games of all time, and its protagonist Kratos and deuteragonist Atreus have many meaningful moments. When Kratos trains his son, Atreus makes a rookie mistake.
While Atreus apologizes, Kratos does not accept his apology and instead tells him to focus on improving. While the quote sounds harsh, it’s great advice for anyone learning a new skill or life lesson. Mistakes happen, but the most important thing is to learn from every mistake. Ideally, improve afterwards.
