Gamers sometimes overlook outfits in video games and only focus on the character as a whole. However, outfits play an important role in gaming by adding to the artistry of a game. Often players spend the entire game looking at the outfits. Sometimes the small changes in a recurring outfit make it special, while sometimes it’s just the design.
Not all of the outfits mentioned will be the outfits everyone knows. However, some of these outfits are iconic within their franchises. All outfits or outfit sets are the ones that deserve some light.
10/10 Isaac Clarke Advanced Engineer RIG – Dead Space
Isaac Clarke’s Advanced Engineer Rig is one of the penultimate colors in Dead Space. Still, it is certainly one of the most memorable colors that the player gets. It is one of the main colors used in much of the marketing presented for the game.
The mask is completely intact, with three large beam-like slits on it and a smaller one at the top. There are small armor slots that cover the player’s entire body. Overall, the design offers something that looks like what a future miner would wear. This outfit is part of what adds to the credibility that Dead Space brought with it.
9/10 Link Green Tunic Outfit – The Legend of Zelda Series
Link wears many different pieces of clothing in the Legend of Zelda games. The most iconic of these outfits would have to be the green tunic. Link is often seen wearing this outfit in most games. In some games, he gets different outfits as the story progresses, but this is his most classic outfit.
The outfit is never truly complete without the finishing touches of the Master Sword and Hylian Shield. Both items bear the Triforce and Hylian Crest markings. All of Link’s outfit pieces are iconic to his story. This is because each piece is infused with knowledge from different timelines of the series.
8/10 Master Chief Spartan Armor – Halo Series
In the history of gaming, there is no outfit more recognizable in the Sci-Fi FPS genre than the Mjolnir variants of Master Chief in the Halo series. His armor changes slightly as the game series progresses, but the general idea remains the same. It looks like the armor that would belong to an educated super soldier of the future.
The designs that change on Mjolnir are also interesting because each change is canonically part of the same outfit. The only reason the different olive green variants exist is because of the fixes made on the armor. These fixes are due to all the battles Master Chief has been through.
7/10 Zagreus Standard Outfit – Hades
Zagreus is from the game Hades, and while his name or outfit may not be the most popular in households across America, his outfit is truly beautiful. Everywhere a player looks, something else is going on. He wears a gown that exposes part of the right side of his body and arm. It only has a wrap around its arm, which makes for a simple design. The left side of his gown gets interesting.
He has the bones of two demonic dogs as a shoulder protector. His arm wears a glove with a yellow and red symbol. The way the outfit pops up with tones of blood red against white and gray is hauntingly spectacular.
6/10 Mario Overalls – Mario Series
Mario’s overalls are a sacred piece of gaming history because they haven’t changed much. He wears for the most part the same red shirt underneath and the blue overalls with the big gold buttons. However, some games add other outfits to his roster.
The other iconic outfits added to his wardrobe are sometimes parts of his history, such as the Doctor Mario outfit. Still, they will never be the first thing that comes to people’s mind when they think of Mario. The first thing always will be plumber outfit. The main thing about Mario’s basic outfit is that he’s gotten a little better graphically with each iteration of the game.
5/10 Sora’s Default Outfit – Kingdom Hearts 3
Kingdom Hearts 3 may not have been the most well-received in the series. However, it introduced one of the best outfits Sora had in the entire series. Fans of the genre can certainly agree that his outfit has come a long way from where it was in the first game.
It’s a lot slimmer than previous versions and a lot less parachute-like in its design. His shoes also don’t look grotesque as a clown and look like something a rational person would wear. Overall, this is one of his best outfits in the series, and it totally fits Sora and his character evolution.
4/10 Voldo Standard Outfit – SoulCalibur V
Voldo is probably one of the first characters people think of when they play SoulCalibur. It is also the first character in a fighting game that has given everyone nightmares. Part of his recognition has to do with the fact that his move set is authentic to himself. Another part of this is the fact that Voldo wears outfits that grab players’ attention due to its unnatural design.
His outfit in SoulCalibur V has to be one of his most iconic, as he looks like a fuzzy serial killer with a different face in his crotch. Yeah, it’s seriously that weird. He also wears belts that cover most of his face. It’s utterly gruesome, but also makes him bewitchingly hard to look away when he comes on screen.
3/10 Wesker Trench Coat Outfit – Resident Evil 5
Wesker’s darkened outfit in Resident Evil 5 is something anyone with a good sense of fashion can enjoy. As one of the first primary villains of the Resident Evil series, it only makes sense that he would look so ominously awesome.
Wesker wears a patterned leather trench coat that looks like it’s made up of indented and non-indented squares that are black and dark gray. Underneath, he wears a tight turtleneck vest, tight black pants, and combat boots. The way his outfit moves seamlessly from one piece to the next is exquisite. He has no reason to look this good when he takes over the world. Still, he does and therefore earns a bit of respect as one of the most iconic dressed villains.
2/10 Solar Armor of the Sun – Dark Souls
Solaire was something of a mascot for the Dark Souls series for a while. The game’s fans loved him because he had one of the most heartfelt stories the game had to offer. The outfit he wears is so iconic that it can be found in Dark Souls 3.
His armor itself feels like something a knight of tradition would wear. The center sun on his armor was painted by Solaire himself, which can be seen as players collect his armor. Players can also see that unlike some armor in the game, it is powerless. It is a light cloth armor reminiscent of the dark romance that the soul series radiates.
1/10 A witch without memories – Bayonetta
Bayonetta’s costume is by far one of the most fashionable on this list. It makes sense, because character designer Mari Shimazaki took the time to design Bayonetta. She was given three traits to start with, which were mentioned in Shimazaki’s blog post about Bayonetta. In the blog, Shimazaki also mentions, “I designed her in such a way that this fashion sense is reflected in all the small details.”
Every design element in her look is meant to convey a sense of elegance, right down to the birthmark on her face and glasses. It’s hard to say a character’s outfit is as iconic as Bayonetta’s. This is arguably one of the outfits that pays the most attention to every aspect of the design.
