The temperature has dropped, pumpkin spice is everywhere, and October has become a full personality trait. And everyone knows what that means – spooky time! And like every year before, we have the best way to celebrate the changing of the seasons. So pack your comfy clothes, a warm blanket (obviously to use to hide) and a horror video game to dive into. This is my fourth year compiling this list, and every year it gets better and better. If you don’t see your favorite horror video games in this list, check out parts one, two, and three. But let’s stop wasting time chatting and let’s scare!

them and us

The first horror video game of this year is Tendo games’ them and us. It is a classic survival horror game that emphasizes atmosphere and player immersion. The further players explore this strange, never-ending nightmare, the more they discover Alice’s past. It’s a perfect spooky game as we head into the Halloween season. For fans of Resident Evil, Silent Hill and other retro themed survival horror games, this will be a great game to enjoy.

them and us can be found here on PC.

Resident Evil VII: Biohazard

If you thought we would make a list of horror video games without mentioning anything from my favorite franchise, you were wrong. This year we are all about Resident Evil VII: Biohazard. After a few less scary games within the franchise, this addition brings us back to Capcom’s roots of horror and real terror. In addition, it introduces us to the mysterious Ethan Winters and opens the door to Resident Evil Village.

Resident Evil VII: Biohazard can be played on PC via Steam, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.

the quarry

Do you love 2K Games and Supermassive Games? Then you should definitely check out their interactive horror drama, the quarry. Players follow nine camp counselors who are simply trying to survive the night. Each choice affects how the game plays out, allowing the game to play in so many different ways. If you’ve already played it, now’s a great time to dive back in and check out all the untrodden paths you may have missed or try to make it with everyone alive.

the quarry is available on PC via Steam, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.

world of horror

Not every horror game has to be a rich narrative experience. world of horror from panstasz and Ysbryd Games is the perfect example of a horror game with a twist. In this 1-bit love letter to Junji Ito and HP Lovecraft, players work through a rogue-lite style game with turn-based combat and very, very brutal choices. With the plethora of options that can be created, repeating this story over and over is a frighteningly good experience.

world of horror is available with early access on PC through Steam.

The morgue assistant

I really like it when game descriptions for horror video games are short, sweet and to the point. And that’s exactly what DarkStone Digital and DreadXP are for The morgue assistant. It reads, “Only with the dead…Embalm corpses, banish demons, save your soul.” And that’s exactly what you do. But the real charm here is the job simulation mixed with jump scares and the story they slowly build up as the game progresses. What I didn’t expect was to find one of my favorite horror games of the year.

The morgue assistant is playable on PC via Steam.

Poppy playtime

Are you a fan of games like Five nights at Freddy’s? Dan MOB Games’ Poppy playtime will be right up your alley. It is a dark thriller title in which players must solve horror-filled puzzles while trying to survive in an abandoned toy factory full of vengeful toys. The goal is to use the GrabPack to hack electrical circuits and explore the mysterious facility without getting caught.

Poppy playtime is available on PC through Steam.

MADiSON

Switching back to the psychological horror video games brings us to BLOODIOUS GAMES’ MADiSON. In this first-person survival game, you’ll be on the edge of your seat as you try your best not to pee your pants. Using your trusty instant camera, players connect the human world to the afterlife. Through them you have to solve puzzles, explore your environment and, most importantly, survive.

MADiSON is playable on PC via Steam, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.

The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes

Supermassive Games know how to make good horror video games, and The Dark Pictures Anthology series is proof of that. In the last episode, House of As, players explore a buried Sumerian temple with a nest of unearthly creatures. The story follows a group of Special Forces on the hunt for weapons of mass destruction. To survive the night, they must forge a brotherhood with their enemies from the overworld. Honestly, this is one of the best episodes in the franchise to date.

The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes is available on PC via Steam, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.

Rachel Foster’s suicide

Sometimes it’s not the shock reactions and scary monsters that make horror video games really great. Sometimes the ominous mystery sets a tone that makes you so uncomfortable it’s terrifying. That made me fall in love with ONE-O-ONE Games and Daedalic Entertainment’s Rachel Foster’s suicide. The story is full of secrets that Nicole will discover as she tries to survive with the help of the mysterious FEMA agent Irving.

Rachel Foster’s suicide is available on PC via Steam, PS4, Xbox One, and the Nintendo Switch.

Call of Cthulhu

This year’s final horror video game is from Cyanide Studio and Focus Entertainment Call of Cthulhu. Set in 1924, like all good Lovecraft-inspired stories, the story follows P.I. Pierce, who investigates the tragic death of the Hawkins family. What he didn’t expect was to be plunged into a world of creeping madness and cosmic horror. The story contains cryptic clues, shadow figures and sheer fear of the other. So it’s clearly one of our absolute favorite games.

Call of Cthulhu is available on PC via Steam, PS4, Xbox One, and the Nintendo Switch.
