HBO just released the first teaser for The last of us and the fans have a lot to say about it. From finding hidden Easter eggs and details to sharing their thoughts on the first look, Twitter has been out of control with fan reactions since the teaser was released.
The last of us is a direct adaptation of the video game of the same name. While there will be some changes to the show, the bigger storyline and characters will be the same.
10 Realistic Clickers
The teaser for The last of us gave the audience a glimpse of what clickers will look like on the show. Some fans were concerned that they would make the clickers too “CGI” or that they would look cartoonish. Although the audience only got a quick look, the clickers seem to be a big hit with fans.
Twitter user @cinemageddon says the clickers look so impressive, whether it’s CGI or practical effects, they’re going to trigger nightmares. Fans can be in for a terrifying ride if they see the infected in full over the course of the show.
9 Pedro Pascal Supremacy
Fans were unsure of the casting choices for The last of us when they were initially announced. Some believed that Pedro Pascal’s lead role as Joel would clash with his role in The Mandalorian or that his accent would be too different from the character in the video games. With the launch of the first teaser most people are on board with Pascal as Joel, even without showing much, Pascal seems to be one with the character.
Twitter user @rustickettle posted a meme praising Pascal. With the track record the actor has, it’s safe to say he’s going to nail the part. However, he will also compete with one of the top video game voice actors of Troy Baker, who voiced Joel in the video game.
8 Excitement for Ellie
One of the first things fans noticed in the teaser was how different Ellie looks in the show compared to the video game. Ellie’s character came to life in the video game thanks to one of the best performances of female voice actors ever by Ashley Johnson and some Twitter users such as @gonzaljf95expressed that they “can’t get on board with Bella”, referring to Bella Ramsey.
However, for every complaint about the casting choice, there is a more positive view. @sarahkyle7 emphasizes that Ramsey is an outstanding actress and says they can’t wait to see her take the part. After all, looking different from the character does not mean that the young actress will not deliver a great performance.
7 DLC Flashbacks
While the show’s larger storyline is pretty much confirmed because of the video game, the finer details and changes aren’t known yet. But fans have been pretty quick to decipher some of the hidden details in the teaser to find out which direction the show will take. A shot in the teaser showed a character that only appears in a DLC for the game called “Left Behind”.
Twitter user @Kyejohnson13 found out they’re going to do the “Left Behind” flashback and thinks, “If Joel gets injured, we’ll get a pure flashback episode instead of Ellie wandering around a mall.” It will be interesting to see how the studio plays with one of the best story-driven video games ever.

When The last of us was released in 2013, it was one of the highest-rated and most popular games at the time. Players fell in love with the storyline, production design and gameplay.
Love for the The last of us games is so strong that many fans referred to it as a video game that does not need a remake. However, it seems the teaser trailer has changed a lot of my mind, with hardcore fan @SnyderQueen expressing their excitement alongside a gif of Joel.
5 Walking Dead Comparisons
A post-apocalyptic world after a virus outbreak isn’t exactly a new idea, but which set? The last of us apart, even within video games, was the final performance. It was only a matter of time before the wider public started comparing some aspects of the show to other existing shows, including the most popular post-apocalyptic zombie show, The living Dead.
Twitter user @Mikey_Co84 jokes that the teaser “looks like this could be the best episode of The Walking Dead since season 1.” While some similarities between the two shows are somewhat unavoidable given their subject matter, only time will tell how this show stands out.
4 Potential for more video game customizations
Video game adaptations, be they movies or TV shows, haven’t had a good track record with the recent Halo and Resident Evil series that fails to live up to the intoxicating expectations of fans. It may seem easy to modify a pre-existing source material, but the execution usually falls short.
However, some fans are raving about the show not only for its story and characters, but also for what the show’s success could mean for future video game adaptations. The show’s success could also pave a better path for future adaptations.
3 Maybe a movie would be better
The last of us was compelling from start to finish, but just because a material performed very well in one medium doesn’t guarantee it will do so in another. Some fans of the original video game are a little concerned about how the overall story and events will translate into a series. There’s also an argument that instead of a series, the studio could have made a single movie.
Twitter user @HeartsUnity believes the whole story can be told through a single movie. There’s a possibility that the series will feel a bit stretched, but it all depends on the final execution from the studio.
2 Hoping for a story expansion
From now, The last of us only has two episodes and one DLC. Although the games have an extensive and complicated story, some fans believe that there is not much source material to continue the series. The showrunners could expand on the existing story, especially if the series is going to be greenlit for several seasons.
A good way to do this, as described by @Perplexer28, is to dig into what happened before the first game to expand the storyline. This could also give the public a glimpse into the demise of cities large and small.
1 Hard to please the fans
One of the hardest things for any studio is to satisfy the die-hard fans of the original source material. This can also be seen in shows such as House of the Dragon or Rings of Power. Some fans have pointed out that if the story is too similar, the game fans will not see the point of watching the show and if the story is changed too much, fans will not be happy about this either.
Twitter user @Reynaldo_O23 thinks the only way the studio can succeed is to “create a whole new path in the expansion of the universe.” From the short teaser trailer, it looks like the studio will make some creative choices that are different from the game, but follow the same bigger storyline.
