The great thing about science fiction (sci-fi) is that it gives people a glimpse into a world that may or may not be true. Novels and movies let people see it, but video games let players experience it. Obviously some of the games mentioned are way out of reach, but it’s still fun to think about how much of the technology looked at in these games will one day be possible.

The games mentioned are sci-fi in their settings and nature. Sci-fi stories don’t always take place in the future, and neither do all these games. According to Britannica, science fiction “a form of fiction that deals primarily with the impact of factual or imagined science on society or an individual.” Well, all the games mentioned in the list live up to that statement.

10 Fallout: New Vegas

Fallout: New Vegas is the best post-apocalyptic game that interweaves an exciting story with strong character development and a great sense of world building. Everything a player encounters makes sense in the created world.

The game immerses players by showing a world ravaged by nuclear war where bottle caps are a currency. The game is a great RPG in which side quests give players more knowledge of various vaults and society that has come after the apocalypse. The graphics are a bit dated, but that doesn’t detract from the setting.

9 Doom: Eternal

Doom: Eternal is a fast-paced, action-packed first-person shooter. This game is sci-fi fantasy as it takes place in the future where demons have overtaken the earth. Doomguy, the main character, must use his arsenal of weapons to destroy large numbers of demons.

This isn’t a typical sci-fi game as nothing is over-explained, and the game mainly relies on gameplay to keep players interested. The gameplay never feels out of place and does a fantastic job of keeping players engaged with the title.

8 StarCraft II

StarCraft II is a real-time strategy game that allows players to collect resources and build massive armies to battle against each other. The game has heavy sci-fi elements as players can play three different races online. They can play as two alien races – the Zerg and Protoss – or the human race – the Terran.

The lore is well thought out as it explains what is going on in the StarCraft world, giving players a broader view of the different races. The game has a steep learning curve, although it’s worth exploring for its incredible setting and brilliant story.

7 Mass Effect 2

Mass Effect 2 gives players a full-scale sci-fi adventure. The game has interplanetary travel that feels purposeful as different planets have their own issues. Often, players can do side missions on planets that contribute to the game’s story.

The story is simple in scope, as it may seem like another alien invasion story, but the threat is presented to the player intellectually with a course dialogue. The option to become whoever a player wants to be like Shepard (the main character) is done impeccably.

6 Subnautics

Subnautica will not have a player wandering through deep space, but instead the beautiful yet horrifying depths of an alien ocean. The game takes place in the future where mankind has gone out to colonize other planets. The plot of the game has changed drastically during its creation, but the survival elements remain the same.

Players must venture into the depths of this alien ocean in search of new materials that will aid them in their quest. There is a lot to discover in this game as well as a lot of unique flora and fauna that can be explored to shape this world.

5 Dead space 2

Dead Space 2 takes a closer look at the world it created in the first game. Isaac has been captured by EarthGov and placed in a mental hospital for insane after the events of the first game. These events gave him valuable information implanted in his head from the cursed alien object he encountered. The game is set in 2511 and has so many wacky sci-fi elements scattered throughout.

The weapons feel like it belongs to a future where Earth has destroyed the galaxy through excessive mining. The zombie alien hybrids, Necromorphs, are awesome, but also terrifying to watch. Dead Space 2 is by far the best survival horror sci-fi game out there.

4 Halo: Combat Evolved

Halo: Combat Evolved is part of what started a lot of craze for first-person shooters taking place in the future. The game features a breathtaking story that takes the player and immediately pushes him into the role of the main character. The players crash-land on a mysterious planet where most of the action takes place within the first 30 minutes of the game.

The premise keeps players interested as they learn more about the battle and reasoning behind the ringed alien planet. The game’s couch co-op was also a blast that encouraged LAN parties at the time.

3 Portal 2

Portal 2 is full of mystery as the world feels post-apocalyptic, but after learning the lore of the game, players will discover that this is not the case. The game takes place in a highly isolated futuristic situation specific to the main character of the game.

It gives a feeling of a day in the life. That day in the main character’s life happens to happen as she is captured by a maniacal robot who continues to force her to do portal puzzles until she dies. It’s the perfect sequel to the original.

2 Half-life 2

Half-Life 2 is not only a great sci-fi game, but it is undeniably one of the best games ever. The story is phenomenal as it offers a planet on which the main character made a big impact during the events of the first game. The areas feel like a futuristic Earth that has been completely overtaken by aliens.

The plot of the game is well intertwined with the interactive future setting. Every part of this game brings something new. It also revolutionized the way physics works in games. It’s a must-try sci-fi adventure and a lot happens.

1 BioShock

BioShock has to be one of the most spectacular sci-fi games ever made. This is due to the game’s extensive knowledge of the underwater city and fascinating enemies. The game feels like the player goes through the setting of Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, but under water.

It’s a horrifying picture of a dark, drug-addicted world that has been completely dragged down and damaged. The twists are also some of the most out-of-pocket sci-fi based twists ever to appear in gaming. The way gameplay works is also in line with the world that the players have to discover.
