When the series first debuted in 2003 almost twenty years ago, Duty does not require a subtitle; a relatively standard FPS romp through the European theater of World War II, inspired by Electronic Arts’ Medal series, it attracted attention at the time, but it is not celebrated as a series highlight.

That would come with 2007’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. A daring foray into contemporary combat, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare ushered in a new era of military shooters and brought a new formula for FPS multiplayer specifically tailored for consoles. Of course, the subseries’ multiplayer components wouldn’t have been nearly as memorable without some excellent maps, and the Modern Warfare games had those in spades.

Resistance

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3

A marquee from 2011 Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3The Resistance took place in war-torn Parisian streets, not far from the Eiffel Tower. One of the game’s tiniest multiplayer battlefields, players vie for control of apartment interiors and blown-out storefronts, often with the ridiculous FMG9s, incredibly overpowered at close range.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 probably one of the most poorly remembered Duty titles. Most of its multiplayer maps were sprawling and made for lengthy firefights, but Resistance was a notable exception. The card also returned in Call of Duty: WWIIalthough the name was changed to Profession.

Hackney Yard

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019)

After audience reception to Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 was relatively lukewarm, switching Activision and Infinity Ward and ushering in a new era for the franchise Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. The 2019 title was sort of a soft reboot of the subseries, taking a slightly more grounded approach to multiplayer gameplay, while introducing new movement mechanics and requiring more tactical play.

That said, Hackney Yard, one of eight all-new maps to debut at the game’s launch, had a very classic, fast-paced feel to it. One of the submission’s most popular offerings, Hackney Yard, was eventually ported to Call of Duty mobilealso.

high-rise

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2

Facing a series of skyscrapers, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2In the Highrise map, we see two factions spawning in office buildings that face each other, competing for an under-construction middle ground. Packed with lower tunnels that are perfect for players looking to flank the enemy and a selection of supreme sniper sightlines, Highrise was one of the best in the game. Modern Warfare 2 basic game.

Highrise is probably best remembered for its ridiculous vantage points that allowed for unreal quick shots and throwing-knife tricks.

Dome

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3

Dome, located on the site of an abandoned Cold War radio command bunker, was the smallest map in the world Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3‘s multiplayer lineup, and it almost always guaranteed a frenetic match, regardless of game mode. Notably a bombed-out bunker, a dilapidated command center, and a radio tower, Dome had many interesting sightlines for savvy players, and it was a haven for those who preferred to run with shotguns and SMGs.

Dome was under Modern Warfare 3‘s most well-received cards, and it was later reintroduced in Call of Duty: Vanguardthis time called Radar.

shooting house

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019)

One of the first post-launch cards introduced in the Modern Warfare 2019 lineup, Shoot House was, in a way, the reboot’s take on its predecessor’s infamous Shipment map. Ridiculously tight and incredibly fast, Shoot House demanded expert reaction times and a quick trigger finger to take down the many 725 sporting opponents.

Despite its small size, Shoot House went down in history as one of the most acclaimed multiplayer maps in the world Modern Warfareand there’s a significant chance it could reappear in 2022 Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2.

Released

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare

Taking place on part of an abandoned military base, the teams battle through narrow passageways and open corridors to establish supremacy in one of the original Modern Warfare‘s most legendary cards. Gritty and overgrown, Vacant had something of a post-apocalyptic vibe, although the frequent chaotic assignments on the medium map meant that no one could find time to admire the scenery.

Was so loved Modern Warfare‘s Vacant that it reappeared in the 2019 pseudo reboot, and it was also added to the free-to-play venture Call of Duty: Mobile for 2021.

Terminal

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2

A sniper’s haven filled with several long sightlines, an infamous stretch of corridor, and a central structure that afforded excellent views over much of the map, Terminal was always guaranteed to get the most votes in Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer lobbies.

Perfectly suited for just about any game mode, Terminal was a fan favorite at the time of Modern Warfare 2‘s release, but its legacy remains, as it was reintroduced in Modern Warfare 3, Infinite Warfareand Call of Duty: Mobile.

Dispatch

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare

One of the most controversial Duty cards in the history of the series, Shipment was considered a joke when it first debuted in Modern Warfare. While excellent for the title’s one-on-one Cage Match mode, it made six-on-six matches so chaotic that they were essentially unplayable. Cutting down multiple enemies with a single clip was not out of the question, and it was entirely possible to earn a six-man feed from a single grenade launcher round.

Frustrating as it was, the card was undeniably memorable, returning in more than a few Duty titles, Forefront and Call of Duty: Mobile are two recent examples.

Crash

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare

A typical Duty three lane map, Modern Warfare‘s Crash saw players engage in gunfights in the nearby streets of a Middle Eastern city. The focal point of the map was a crashed helicopter in the central courtyard, although supremacy was also often determined by those who controlled the nearby three-story building.

Suitable for most playing styles and modes, most Modern Warfare players would probably argue that the map is a top five for the subseries. Appear in multiple Duty games, Crash has created a blueprint from which modern Duty still drawing cards.

Rust

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2

The ultimate one-on-one map, Rust was arguably the most memorable of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2‘s assortment of multiplayer maps. Extremely small but very open, players battled for a central structure and scrambled to get out of their opponent’s sight when they found themselves in one of the map’s many vulnerable points.

A fan favorite on the short list of the best Duty cards of all time, Rust is a classic that has returned in several since Duty titles, including the 2019 incarnation of Modern Warfare.
