As a release date for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever As we get closer, MCU fans will be more excited to see who takes over the Black Panther mantle from T’Challa. The confirmation of Namor the Submariner as the villain has also caused a lot of excitement. And while the premiere date is still a while away, there are many other ways fans can immerse themselves in Black Panther content.
An important way for fans to experience the Black Panther experience is through video games. While the ruler of Wakanda doesn’t have a solo game yet, he has been a part of many incredible PC, console and mobile games in recent years. But which one of them portrays the character better and also gives fans a great gameplay experience?
Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 (2009)
Developed by Vicarious Visions, the game focuses on one of the biggest Marvel events, the ‘Civil War’. Heroes in support of the Superhero Registration Act (including Black Panther), may fight those who do not support it.
With over 30 playable characters, the game feels grander compared to Captain America: Civil War, which contains only selected heroes. Black Panther fans will especially appreciate the voice work of the legendary Tim Russ who brings out T’Challa’s chants in a very convincing way. The gameplay not only mimics the standard Mortal Kombat kind of face-offs either. Several cool features are available, most notably “The Fusion”, which allows two heroes to temporarily combine their powers, leading to devastating effect.
Co-created by Capcom and Eighting, the game pits Marvel superheroes against Capcom heroes. Black Panther is an NPC, but he is an essential part of the storyline as he has a romantic relationship with one of the best X-Men characters, Storm.
In a game that focuses primarily on the combat, the side storyline featuring Storm and Black Panther is just as refreshing as it reminds Marvel fans of one of the surprising moments in the comics where the two heroes became lovers and came to rule Wakanda together. . And thanks to the quick replacement feature in the game, there is more satisfaction for players because characters don’t die too quickly. Any hero that becomes weak can be easily replaced.
Marvel Strike Force (2018)
The FoxNext game is exclusively for iOS, iPadOS and Android. And in it, STRIKE gathers teams of superheroes to stop Ultimus and his troops. Black Panther is an unlockable character that can be achieved with three stars.
There are plenty of things to love about Black Panther here, the prominent being his movie-accurate costume since the game was released a few months after the Chadwick Boseman movie. As for the action, it’s not just a scenario where all the superheroes are on their own, because Black Panther can summon the Dora Milaje depending on the level. That has advantages, because when assisted by Wakandan allies, an attack cannot be blocked, making the superhero even more questionable. With such cool features, it’s no surprise that Marvel Strike Force won the “Mobile Game of the Year” trophy at the SXSW Gaming Awards (via The Verge).
Lego Marvel Superheroes (2013)
Marvel superheroes must stop Doctor Doom and Loki, who plan to take over the world. Players can choose from up to 189 characters, and Black Panther is one of the options.
The Traveller’s Tales game limits Black Panther to just one move, the “Jump and Shred”, but this doesn’t seem all that strange, since flexibility isn’t really a thing for Lego characters. On a better note, the storyline makes up for the fighting limitations, and it’s an MCU fans will love too because it’s similar to the movie. T’Challa inherits the throne from his father, T’Chaka, and gets to fight Ulysses Klaw as well. Black Panther aside, players will have a harder time exiting the game because there is so much to do. With 15 main missions and 11 side missions, it’s clear that variety is something the creators cared about.
Marvel Heroes (2015)
Events in the Gazillion Entertainment game revolve around Marvel superheroes trying to stop Doctor Doom after he gets his hands on the Cosmic Cube. Black Panther is one of many playable characters.
The game plays on the “What if?” narrative because heroes can acquire the powers of their counterparts when the player reaches certain stages. As such, it’s an opportunity to watch Black Panther shoot or fly webs depending on the player’s skills. Emphasis is also placed on the dialogue and this means phrases like “Wakanda Forever!” do not miss it. The “Raid mode” is also very nice because it allows the Avengers to come together and perform a concerted attack.
Marvel Contest of Champions (2014)
The Kabam video game is also only for IOS and Android and is best at Marvel’s best crossover events, the ‘Contest Of Champions’. Among the 207 playable characters is Black Panther.
Given the large number of options available, players can experience all their dream battles. But it all depends on how good a gamer is as there are only 1 star superheroes available at the beginning. Since the fighting arena is rendered in 3D and 2D planes, characters can’t move much, but just as there are a variety of characters, there are also different locations. So a fight like Captain America Vs Wolverine in Wakanda is very possible.
Disney Infinity 3.0 (2015)
The sandbox game, published by Disney Interactive Studios, mainly focuses on the Star Wars franchise. However, there is a “Marvel Battlegrounds” segment where Loki and Ultron manipulate superheroes to fight each other.
Few games contain several franchises in one without feeling complicated, but Disney Infinity 3.0 creates a mini Disney festival without flaws. In addition to players like Luke Skywalker and Black Panther, players will also get options like Dory and Riley. Fans will also be happy with the preference for the ‘Marvel Battlegrounds’ segment, as it’s the only one that allows local four-player gameplay. As such, Black Panther can choose to work with anyone.
Marvel Superhero Squad Online (2011)
Jointly produced by The Amazing Society and Gazillion Entertainment, Marvel Superhero Squad Online features superheroes who face off against multiple henchmen before reaching the final boss. Black Panther is featured in the arcade version of the game.
With minimal skill moves, the game is best suited for a younger audience. And they are guaranteed to have a lot of fun, because the missions are not complicated. Players also get more control, as they don’t have to rely on some of the best Marvel teams. They can fill Nick Fury’s shoes by collecting their own groups of superheroes
Fortnite Battle Royale (2017)
In Epic Games’ offerings, characters are dropped in various locations and forced to fight for survival. Black Panther is one of the many characters available for purchase.
A fight between Black Panther and the Terminator wouldn’t happen anywhere else, but it’s very possible here. Fans who are tired of seeing their favorite heroes face off alone against characters from their franchises can experience all kinds of crossover dream match-ups. But it’s all something that needs work, so players get better at the game as they try to earn enough to buy the best characters.
Marvel’s Avengers (2020)
Based on the MCU version of the group, Kamala Khan in the Crystal Dynamix fighting game sees the Avengers reassemble for various missions. Black Panther was a late addition to the game, first appearing in 2021.
The best thing about the game is the graphics, which make the dialogue scenes look like they’ve been lifted out of the MCU. Using the AIM as the rogue organization also feels revitalizing as it’s not one of the most prominent outfits out there. Plus, using Kamala Khan as the central character also helps prepare her for her MCU fame. As for Black Panther, fans get the usual moves and storylines, but in a game where everything looks real, that doesn’t seem like a problem at all.
