A sequel to the 2005 Ultimate Spider-Man game was briefly in development before it was canceled, and might feature a playable Green Goblin.

Ultimate Spider Man is one of the most highly regarded Spider-Man video games, but it is not widely known that a sequel, Ultimate Spider-Man 2, was canceled shortly after it started preliminary development. Treyarch did some preliminary drafts for it, but it didn’t get too far. Most developers ended up making a piece of concept art, some game items, and story handling. The team wasn’t sure if the game would be picked up by their publisher, Activision, so they were careful not to put too much effort into something that wouldn’t get off the ground.

Ultimate Spider Man was released in 2005. The game was well received and applied many of the gameplay features of its predecessor, Spider Man 2, which was connected to the Sam Raimi movie of the same name. However, critics praised the comic book style and the ability to play as Spider-Man and Venom The mechanics of Venom in ultimate were a bit confused. The game is set in Ultimate Marvel Comics continuity, with the story following Spider-Man’s quest to stop Trask Industries and their experiments with the Venom symbiote. While the sequel never happened, a prequel was made for the Nintendo handheld systems in 2006, titled Spider-Man: Battle for New York.

Ultimately, Activision decided not to proceed with Ultimate Spider-Man 2. youtuber Matt McMuscles uploaded a video detailing the details of the situation, with lead texture artist on Ultimate Spider Man, Chris Salazar, interviewed. He explains that Activision decided to put resources elsewhere because it didn’t believe a sequel would sell well. What fueled this decision was the comparison in sales between: Ultimate Spider Man and the movie tie-in for Raimi’s Spider Man 2which was released a year earlier in 2004. Activision wouldn’t have thought that Ultimate Spider-Man 2 would get the kind of sales that any other movie tie-in-game would get, and so the project shut down shortly after it started development. This is one of the most disappointing cancellations of Spider-Man games, like the Treyarch original ultimate title is among the best of the wall crawler.

Ultimate Spider-Man 2 would have had playable Green Goblin

The video also explains that the acclaimed comic book writer and writer of the first Ultimate Spider Manjust like the Ultimate Spider Man comic book series, Brian Michael Bendis, was slated to return to write the sequel’s story. According to Matt McMuscles’ video, the game would feature the Green Goblin – one of the villains Insomniac’s Spider-Men haven’t fought yet – as the main villain, and possibly even the second playable character, replacing the role of Venom from the first game. Green Goblin may seem like an odd choice given its lack of antihero references, but Venom was pretty monstrous in the first one too Marvel’s Spider-Manso it makes sense why that trope had to be repeated in the canceled sequel.

Matt McMuscles claims that while the game didn’t advance, Bendis has re-used the game’s story treatment, which the “Death of a Goblin” arc in the Ultimate Spider Man comic. It is a pity Ultimate Spider-Man 2 never happened. The original was fun, unique Spider Man game, and it would be nice to have some Ultimate Spider Man‘s activities in Marvel’s Spider Man 2 at least.
