any new World of Warcraft expansion brings with it a whole host of new zones to explore. Shadowlands introduced the dark titular realms, Battle for Azeroth brought players to Zandalar and Kul’Tiras, Warlords of Draenor took players to the alternate reality Draenor, and dragon flight will take players to the infamous Dragon Isles later this year. These new zones promise to be some of the biggest that World of Warcraft ever had.

GAMERANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Not much is known about all of the specific story beats of these new zones, but players have been able to explore a few now that the dragon flight alpha is in full swing. Each zone promises a plethora of content to chew through, with stories deeply rooted in Azeroth’s rich lore, something that Shadowlands was criticized for leaving. The five new zones that make up The Dragon Isles will be where players spend most of their time in the beginning, and they will have to get used to the specifics of each.

The forbidden range

The Forbidden Reach serves as the starting area for the brand new Dracthyr Evoker class and racing hybrid. Located off the coast of The Dragon Isles, this island was created by Neltharion, the black dragon aspect that later came to be known as Deathwing. It served as a training ground for its perfect soldiers, but has since been broken up and abandoned. Many dragons avoid this island and deep below the surface are large underground caves filled with Dracthyr that have begun to stir due to the presence of an ancient enemy.

The Watching Shores

The Waking Shores will be the first zone that World of Warcraft players enter during their adventures in dragon flight, as long as they don’t play as a Dracthyr. This zone is the ancestral home of the red and black dragon flights. As such, players will assist Alextrasza and Wrathion in reclaiming these lands from the enemy. They will have to traverse volcanic areas, geysers, hot springs and the remnants of ancient dragon architecture as they fight to take back this ancient homeland.

Ohn’aran Plains

The Ohn’aran Plains will be the second zone players will enter on their quest to reclaim the Dragon Islands. These plains were once divided by the green dragon flight and the centaurs, but all that has changed. Since the green dragon flight took off during the Great Sundering of Azeroth, the centaurs have been able to spread across these plains and build their civilization. The zone itself is teeming with life and seems to come straight from the realms of the Emerald Dream. The players will help the green dragon flight in making a new home in these beautiful lands, making one or two centaur friends along the way.

The Azure Span

The Azure Span would be one of the largest World of Warcraft zones to date and takes a lot of inspiration from Grizzly Hills in Northrend. It is the home of the blue dragon flight and will be the third zone that players will visit during their travels. Players help Kalecgos and the Blue Dragon Flight as they try to uncover the secrets of their ancient homeland. The zone is filled with a variety of different biomes, from large snowcapped peaks to lush forests, and it will likely be the perfect place to mess around with the new dragon ride feature.

Thaldrassister

Thaldraszus serves as the seat of power for all five of Azeroth’s great dragon flights, and it is also the location of the main hub city of dragon flight, Valdrakken. The zone is dotted with great dragon architecture themed around the various dragon flights, and it’s where the bronze dragon flight spends their time guarding the timeline. The town of Valdrakken is where players are likely to spend most of their time as it offers amenities such as an auction house, vendors, trainers and dragon flight‘s brand new crafting order system. It will also be the last zone for players to venture into, and will hopefully align with fan-favorite hubs like Dalaran.

These five zones make up The Dragon Isles and are where players will spend most of their time for years to come. These won’t be the only new zones added with dragon flight as each update tends to add another, but these will be the main ones of the expansion. Players can only hope that these beautiful zones have a great storyline to back them up.

World of Warcraft: Dragonflight will be available for PC in 2022.
