The games we love are filled with entertaining personalities. And hey, a great personality will often lead to a pretty great character. But you’re in denial if you don’t think how a character looks affects things. Fortunately, games are filled with excellent designs. Our favorite villains are no exception to that rule either. In fact, as a rule of thumb, the most striking designs are often tied to these antagonistic figures.
Of course, given how long games have been around, there are countless amounts of absolutely stunning character designs. They range from a casual, streetwear vibe to lavish Victorian attire.
9 Vergil, Devil May Cry
Vergil is a recurring villain in the Devil May Cry series. While some may be upset that he’s been called a “villain,” he’s committed mass murder at least twice now, so we’re pretty comfortable with our categorization of him. One thing that any ambiguity lacks is how damn cool Vergil looks.
From his back-combed hair to his iconic blue coat, Vergil has never looked anything but sleek (no DmC Vergil doesn’t count). While his way of dressing might be a little stuffy for some, we’re in for it. We wish he would pour his passion for mass murder into a clothing line or something.
8 Diva, Streets Of Rage 4
Very little is known about Streets Of Rage 4’s first boss character. We know she likes snakes and her name is Diva. That is it. oh there is a something else we know about her. She is a damn sleek dresser.
Diva rocks slim-fitting jeans with a baggy button-up shirt. She also seems to coordinate her hair color with her shoes: both are cherry red. Honestly, it’s an excellent look. It feels like a modern take on ’90s R&B fashion; it’s a look that feels incredibly modern, but also has a vintage edge.
7 Dracula, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
How are we going to talk about the most fashionable styles without paying tribute to Castlevania’s neat antagonist? Look, we get it. It’s a very, very retro style. But DAMN Dracula looks sharp. They talk about layering, but Mr. Pointy Teeth has about ten layers.
In addition, he wears a cape. And he does it all right! If you look good with a cape, you’re a style god! When Dracula enters the room, the Belmonts aren’t the only ones killing.
6 Yamazaki, king of warriors
Yamazaki from King Of Fighters is an absolute goon. He has no respect for those around him, and he is quick to violence. But there must be more to this thug than that because he clearly cares deep about his fashion.
Yamazaki walks around in tight-fitting black clothes (with his shirt neatly tucked in), slicked back, bleached blond hair, and a giant white fur coat with a huge fringe. It’s an incredibly clean look. Someone gives this man a towel, because he is dripping.
5 Lady Dimitrescu, Resident Evil Village
Speaking of stylish Resident Evil villains, some people will probably click Wesker. But we’re not convinced that a Matrix cosplayer belongs on this list. Lady Dimitrescu, on the other hand, has such an outstanding appearance that she became iconic the moment the world saw her.
Her appearance contrasts perfectly with her personality. It is graceful and elegant. It’s the kind of outfit you’d wear to a ball, not something you’d put on while maiming your enemies’ hands. This is one of the more classic looks on this list, but there’s no denying that it definitely pops. Hell, we think she’s single-handedly changed her mind about wide-brimmed hats.
4 Reno, Final Fantasy 7
Look, the suit is a cliche right now. We understand it; it looks sharp: clear. But it’s also the dullest way to look good. So we’re not going to hand out a list of pack carriers. But you must include at least one, and of all the candidates you to have to go with Reno.
Sure, there are some pretty sharply dressed villains in Final Fantasy 7, but Reno really looks quite uniform and puts his own spin on it. The loose fit, the shirt not tucked in, it’s peak, groomed indifference. The best part is that Reno has a style that screams “I don’t try” while also being the one who clearly tries his best. And that feels like a very established convention in fashion, doesn’t it?
3 Gif, last fight
Poison, one of the members of the Mad Gear Gang, is known for her incredible agility and high-flying maneuvers. However, her agility isn’t the reason she’s stuck with video games for over thirty years. Poison has one of the best punk looks in games.
Everything from the ripped tank top, to the one-arm sleeve, to her motorcycle cap, makes her look iconic. It’s a fantastically kitschy style that seems to be a tribute to the 80s as a whole. And you gotta love her dedication to it! Poison never left this unique look and still rocks it to this day. Today, as a member of the Street Fighter roster, her villainy seems less of a core feature of her character, but her style is as strong as ever.
2 Carmen Sandiego, where in the world is Carmen Sandiego?
Big floppy hats more or less dominate this list, right? Carmen Sandiego is an example of how you can look relatively simple and just kill with it. She wears a red coat, a red hat and a yellow scarf. That can’t be enough, can it? And yet it all comes together to make it immediately clear who she is. It’s cohesive, color-coordinated bliss.
Some people do a little with a lot, but they have to take a page out of Carmen’s book and do a lot with little. Where in the world is Carmen Sandiago? Who knows? We are not geography teachers. What is she? A Goddamnit fashion icon!
1 Majima, Yakuza
Look, we know, calling Yakuza’s Majima a “rogue” might feel a little reductive. But speaking of the first game specifically, Majima is definitely one of the main antagonists. And honestly, even though his tenure as an antagonist was shorter than his run as a supporting character, you could argue that he’s at his most charismatic as a villain.
Majima’s style should not have to work. An extremely loud snakeskin jacket? No shirt underneath? Leather pants? And to top it all off… Dress shoes with a steel toe cap? This is a deep one unique look. But that’s the thing about fashion, right? Those who are really in fashion can rock a style that should be absurd on paper. And that is Majima down to the last detail. Amazingly, he doesn’t even come across as trying too hard. He… just looks cool.
